حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: أنا دَاوُدُ بْنُ أَبِي هِنْدَ، وَعُبَيْدَةُ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، أَنَّ مُرَّةَ بْنَ شَرَاحِيلَ، صَاحِبَ السَّيْلَحِينِ بَعَثَ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بِجَارِيَةٍ، فَسَأَلَهَا هَلْ لَكِ مِنْ زَوْجٍ؟ قَالَتْ: نَعَمْ، فَرَدَّهَا، وَكَتَبَ إِلَى مُرَّةَ: «إِنِّي وَجَدْتُ هَدِيَّتَكَ مَشْغُولَةً» فَاشْتَرَى مُرَّةُ بُضْعَهَا مِنْ زَوْجِهَا بِخَمْسِمِائَةِ دِرْهَمٍ، وَبَعَثَ بِهَا إِلَيْهِ فَقَبِلَهَا
Marrah bin Shurahil sent a slave woman to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). When he asked her, "Do you have a husband?" she replied, "Yes." So he returned her and wrote: "I found the slave woman you gifted to be engaged (i.e., married)." Then Marrah bought her private part (i.e., her marital rights) from her husband and sent her again to his service, so he accepted her.
