Hadith 3104

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that if a person takes an oath of abstinence (ila') and then divorces, then these two are like two racing horses.

Brief Explanation
Explanation: Isma'il bin 'Ayyash: If he narrates from his Syrian (Shami) shuyukh, he is trustworthy (thiqah), but when he narrates from non-Syrian (i.e., Makkan, Iraqi) narrators, he is considered weak (da'if).

Ibn Jurayj: Trustworthy (thiqah), but he is a mudallis, and here he narrates with 'an (the 'an'anah form).

'An man haddathahu: This is an unknown (majhul) narrator; his identity is not specified.

Therefore, there are two defects ('ilal) in the chain (isnad):

1. Isma'il bin 'Ayyash narrating from a non-Syrian narrator.
2. The 'an'anah of Ibn Jurayj and the unknown narrator.
