A Bedouin came to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: "I have made my wife unlawful for myself." Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "She is not unlawful for you." The Bedouin said: "Did Allah not say in the Qur'an: «كُلُّالطَّعَامِكَانَحِلًّالِبَنِيإِسْرَائِيلَإِلَّامَاحَرَّمَإِسْرَائِيلُعَلَىنَفْسِهِ»?" Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) laughed and said: "What do you know about what Israel made unlawful for himself?" Then he said to the people: Israel (i.e., Yaqub, peace be upon him) suffered from sciatica, so he vowed that if Allah cured him, he would not eat the meat of any animal with a sciatic vein. That is why the Jews remove the veins from the meat.
