Hadith 2860

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، وَمُطَرِّفٌ، أَنَّهُمَا سَمِعَا الشَّعْبِيَّ، يَقُولُ: إِنَّ نَاسًا يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ فِي الْحَرَامِ: هِيَ ثَلَاثٌ، وَلَيْسَ كَذَلِكَ، وَلَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ بِمَا قَالَ مِمَّنْ رَوَى ذَلِكَ عَنْهُ، إِنَّمَا قَالَ: «لَا أُحَرِّمُهَا وَلَا أُحِلُّهَا، إِنْ شِئْتَ فَتَقَدَّمْ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ فَتَأَخَّرْ»
Hazrat Amir Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Some people claim that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said about haram that it is three divorces, but it is not so. I know better than those who narrated from him. He said: "I neither make it haram nor halal; if he wishes, he may proceed, and if he wishes, he may withdraw."
