بَابُ مَنْ قَالَ لِامْرَأَتِهِ: اعْتَدِّيChapter: One who says to his wife, "Observe your waiting period"
Hadith 2413

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: أنا أَبُو حُرَّةَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: " إِذَا قَالَ الرَّجُلُ لِامْرَأَتِهِ: أَنْتِ طَالِقٌ اعْتَدِّي، فَهِيَ وَاحِدَةٌ، وَإِذَا قَالَ: أَنْتِ طَالِقٌ وَاعْتَدِّي، فَهُمَا اثْنَتَانِ "
Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: If a husband says, "You are divorced, observe the waiting period (‘iddah)," then this is one divorce. And if he says, "You are divorced and observe the waiting period," then this is two divorces.
