Hadith 2202

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا هُشَيْمٌ، أنا مُبَارَكُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ قَالَ: إِنْ تَزَوَّجْتُ فُلَانَةَ فَهِيَ طَالِقٌ، فَقَالَ: «لَيْسَ بِشَيْءٍ، لَا طَلَاقَ إِلَّا بَعْدَ مِلْكٍ»
It is narrated from Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: If a man says, "If I marry such-and-such woman, then she is divorced from me." He (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "This is nothing; divorce is not valid without marriage."
