A woman came to Hazrat Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) and said: "O Abu Umayyah! This man came to me, there was no intention of marriage, I said: 'Will you marry me?' He said: 'Are you joking?' So I gave myself to him in marriage and also gave four thousand dirhams in wealth, then increased his wealth. Now he wants to divorce me and marry another woman." Shurayh asked the man, and he confirmed it. Then Shurayh asked the gathering, and it was told that a similar case had come before Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and he had given the verdict: "Divorce and marriage are in the hands of the man; if he wishes, he may marry up to four women. If he divorces, then divorce is in the man's hand, and the woman should be given her wealth and an equal amount more with which he made her body lawful." Shurayh said: "This is our verdict, stand up!"
