حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، نا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ " أَنَّ امْرَأَةً جَاءَتْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ جِئْتُ لِأَهَبَ لَكَ نَفْسِي فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا فَصَعَّدَ الْبَصَرَ وَصَوَّبَهُ ثُمَّ طَأْطَأَ رَأْسَهُ، فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَزَوِّجْنِيهَا، فَقَالَ: «هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ؟» فَقَالَ: لَا، وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ: «اذْهَبْ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ فَانْظُرْ هَلْ تَجِدُ شَيْئًا»، فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ: لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا وَجَدْتُ شَيْئًا، فَقَالَ: «اذْهَبْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ»، فَذَهَبَ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ: لَا وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَلَا خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ وَلَكِنْ هَذَا إِزَارِي - مَا لَهُ رِدَاءٌ - فَلَهَا نِصْفُهُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَا تَصْنَعُ بِإِزَارِكَ» ؟ إِنْ لَبِسْتَهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْهَا مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ، وَإِنْ لَبِسَتْهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَيْكَ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ، فَجَلَسَ الرَّجُلُ حَتَّى طَالَ مَجْلِسُهُ قَالَ: «مَاذَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ» ؟ فَقَالَ: مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا عَدَّدَهَا، فَقَالَ: «أَتَقْرَؤُهُنَّ عَنْ ظَهْرِ قَلْبٍ» ؟ فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: «اذْهَبْ مَلَّكْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman came to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! I have gifted myself to you.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked up at her, then lowered his gaze and bowed his head. A companion said: “O Messenger of Allah! If you have no need of this woman, then marry her to me.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do you have anything (to give as a dowry)?” He said: “No.” The Prophet said: “Go and see if you can find anything.” He went and came back saying: “I found nothing.” The Prophet said: “Go, even if it is an iron ring.” He returned and said: “Not even that.” So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “What do you know from the Qur’an?” He mentioned a few surahs. The Prophet said: “I have married her to you in exchange for what you know of the Qur’an.”
