حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ سَمِعَ عَلِيًّا، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَخْطُبَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ابْنَتَهُ فَذَكَرْتُ أَنْ لَا شَيْءَ لِي، فَذَكَرْتُ عَائِدَتَهُ وَصِلَتَهُ فَخَطَبْتُهَا إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ: «هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ؟» فَقُلْتُ: لَا، فَقَالَ: «أَيْنَ دِرْعُكَ الْحُطَمِيَّةُ؟» قُلْتُ: هِيَ عِنْدِي، قَالَ: هَاتِهَا، فَزَوَّجَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمَّا كَانَتْ لَيْلَةُ دَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهَا جَاءَ فَجَلَسَ وَنَحْنُ فِي قَطِيفَةٍ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْنَاهُ تَخَشْخَشْنَا مِنْهُ فَقَالَ: «لَا تُحْدِثَا شَيْئًا حَتَّى آتِيَكُمَا» فَدَعَا بِإِنَاءٍ فِيهِ مَاءٌ فَدَعَا فِيهِ، ثُمَّ رَشَّهُ عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ: فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنَا أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ أَمْ هِيَ؟ قَالَ: «هِيَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْكَ، وَأَنْتَ أَعَزُّ عَلَيَّ مِنْهَا»
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I intended to ask for the hand of the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but I remembered that I had nothing. Then I recalled his kindness and our relationship, so I sent a marriage proposal to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Do you have anything?' I said: 'No.' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Where is your Hatimiyyah armor?' I said: 'It is with me.' He said: 'Bring it.' Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married me to her. When the wedding night came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came; we were under a sheet, and when we saw him, we drew close together. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Do not do anything until I return.' Then he asked for a vessel of water, supplicated in it, and sprinkled it on us. I asked: 'O Messenger of Allah! Am I more beloved to you or she (Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her)?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'She is more beloved to me than you, but you are dearer to me than her.'"
