Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon and said: "Do not increase the dowries of women. If there was any virtue in this in the world or if it was a cause of piety in the sight of Allah, then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would have been the most deserving of it among you. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not fix the dowry of any of his wives or daughters more than twelve uqiyah. One of you increases the dowry of his wife so much that enmity is created in his heart towards her, and he says: 'I have endured hardship for you, with the ropes of the waterskin.' And in your battles you say that so-and-so was martyred, whereas it is possible that he was carrying silver or gold on his mount for trade. So do not say that he was martyred, but rather say as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Whoever is killed or dies in the way of Allah, he is a martyr.'"
