Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Beware! Do not increase the dowries of women. If this were a matter of honor among people or a cause of piety in the sight of Allah the Exalted, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have been the most deserving of it among you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not marry off any of his wives or daughters for a dowry more than twelve uqiyah. One of you increases the dowry for his wife so much that it creates enmity in her heart, and he says: 'I have endured hardship for you, dragged the ropes of the waterskin.' And another thing you say in your gatherings is that so-and-so has been martyred, whereas it is possible that he was loading silver or gold onto his camel or mount to acquire worldly wealth. So say as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever is killed in the way of Allah is a martyr.'"
