حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ زِيَادِ بْنِ أَنْعُمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَا تَنْكِحُوا الْمَرْأَةَ لِحُسْنِهَا؛ فَعَسَى حُسْنُهَا أَنْ يُرْدِيَهَا، وَلَا تَنْكِحُوا الْمَرْأَةَ لِمَالِهَا؛ فَعَسَى مَالُهَا أَنْ يُطْغِيَهَا، وَانْكِحُوهَا لَدِينِهَا، فَلَأَمَةٌ سَوْدَاءُ خَرْمَاءُ ذَاتُ دِينٍ أَفْضَلُ مِنَ امْرَأَةٍ حَسْنَاءَ لَا دِينَ لَهَا»
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Do not marry a woman merely for her beauty or wealth, but marry on the basis of religion."
Brief Explanation
Isma'il ibn 'Ayyash's narration from non-Shamis is a cause of weakness, and likewise, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ziyad ibn An'um is a weak narrator. Imam Dhahabi, in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala" (5/349), writes in the biography of 'Abdullah ibn Yazid: "He narrated from: 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr..." (i.e., he narrated from him, without objection).
