Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the matter of the mawla of Safiyyah. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He is the mawla of my paternal aunt, and I will pay his blood money." Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He is the mawla of my mother, and I will be his heir." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) decided that: "The inheritance will go to Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), and the blood money will be upon Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)." And he said: "The guardianship will be for the family of Zubair as long as their lineage remains." It was asked: "What is meant by lineage?" He replied: "A son; if there is no son, then the guardianship will return to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)."
