Hadith 134

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا خَالِدُ بْنُ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ إِيَاسٍ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي فِرَاسٍ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، إِنَّهُ أَتَى عَلَيَّ زَمَانٌ وَأَنَا لَا أَدْرِي أَنَّ أَحَدًا يُرِيدُ بِقِرَاءَتِهِ غَيْرَ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، حَتَّى خُيِّلَ إِلَيَّ بِآخِرَةٍ أَنَّ أَقْوَامًا يُرِيدُونَ بِقِرَاءَتِهِمْ غَيْرَ اللهِ، فَأَرِيدُوا اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِقِرَاءَتِكُمْ وَأَعْمَالِكُمْ .
It is narrated from Abu Firas (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O people! There was a time when I did not know that anyone could seek the pleasure of anyone other than Allah Almighty through the recitation of the Qur'an, until later I began to think that some people want to please others besides Allah with their recitation. Therefore, in your recitation and deeds, make the pleasure of Allah Almighty your sole objective.
