The decision of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was that if the heirs are the husband, the mother, the sister from the side of the father and mother, and the grandfather, then the husband should be given three shares, the mother two shares, the grandfather one share, and the sister three shares, while Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the mother one share. Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) multiplied the division by three, making a total of 27 shares, and distributed accordingly.

Brief Explanation
Imam Dhahabi (Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’, 4/212): “He did not meet any of the Companions except Anas ibn Malik, and even that is disputed.” ➤ That is: His meeting with the Companions is not established except for Anas ibn Malik, and even that is subject to disagreement.
Ibn Sa‘d (al-Tabaqat al-Kubra): “And he would not narrate much from the Companions; rather, he would narrate from the Followers (Tabi‘in).” ➤ That is: He mostly narrated from the Tabi‘in, and direct narration from the Companions is very rare.
Ibn Hajar (Tahdhib al-Tahdhib): “Much is mursal.” ➤ That is: His narrations are mostly mursal (i.e., he transmits directly from a Companion without mentioning the intermediary).
