Husayn bin Abdur Rahman narrates: I asked Amr bin Jawan, who belonged to Banu Tamim, "What do you think was the reason for Ahnaf's separation?" He replied: I heard Sayyiduna Ahnaf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate: I once came to Madinah Munawwarah while I was going for Hajj. We were still at our resting place and had just made our mounts sit when a man came to us and said, "People have gathered in the mosque." I also went there and saw that many people had gathered in the mosque, and in front of them some individuals were sitting, among whom were Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib, Sayyiduna Zubair, Sayyiduna Talhah, and Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with them). When I went near and stood close to them, it was announced that Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) was coming. When he arrived, he was wearing a yellow cloak. I said to my companion, "Stay here! Let's see what happens here." Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "Is Ali here? Is Zubair here? Is Talhah here? Is Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas here?" People replied, "Yes." Then Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I ask you by Allah's name, besides whom there is no deity, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever buys the place for drying dates of such-and-such a person and dedicates it for Allah, Allah will forgive him.' So I bought that place." I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him that I had bought that place, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Include that place in our mosque, you will get its reward." All those present said, "This is absolutely correct." After this, Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I ask you by Allah's name, besides whom there is no deity, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever buys the well of Rumah and gives it, he will get its reward.' Upon hearing this, I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, 'I have bought the well of Rumah,' so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Leave it for the Muslims to drink from, you will get its reward.'" All those present said, "You have stated this correctly." After this, Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I ask you by the name of Allah, besides whom there is no deity, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Who is the one who will provide equipment for the expedition of Tabuk, Allah will forgive him.'" (Sayyiduna Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, says:) So I provided the entire equipment for that army, even the rope and halter for the camel. All the people said, "You have stated this correctly as well." Upon this, Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Allah! Bear witness! O Allah! Bear witness! O Allah! Bear witness!"
Here, the narrators have differed in the wording of the narration. The narrator named Ibn Idris has narrated in his version: "Who will buy the place for drying dates of Banu so-and-so so that Allah may forgive him, so I bought it for twenty thousand dirhams (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words:) or for twenty-five thousand dirhams." Similarly, he narrated about the well of Rumah that I bought it for such-and-such amount, then I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said, "Dedicate it for the Muslims to drink from, you will get its reward." The narrator named Ali bin Asim, in his narration about the place for drying dates, said: I bought it for such-and-such amount, then I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I have bought the place for drying dates of Banu so-and-so, use it for the expansion of the Muslims' mosque, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Alright! Your reward has become obligatory." Similarly, he said about the well of Rumah: I bought it for twenty thousand dirhams (the narrator is in doubt, or perhaps these are the words:) or for twenty-five thousand dirhams. Whereas the narrator named Abu Awanah, in his narration, said: I bought the place for drying dates for a little more than twenty thousand. The meanings of all these narrations are close to each other.

Thumamah bin Hazn Qushayri narrates that I was present near the house of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) looked towards the people and said: "I ask you by Allah's name, do you know that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, at that time there was only one well of sweet water, the well of Rumah? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Who will buy the well of Rumah and dedicate it for the Muslims? In exchange for it, he will get Paradise.' So I bought it from my wealth and made all Muslims equal partners in it, and today you are preventing me from drinking water from that well and I have to drink sea (i.e., salty) water." The people replied: Allah knows that it is so. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I ask you by Allah and by Islam, do you know that I provided equipment for the Battle of Tabuk from my personal wealth?" The people replied: Allah knows that it is so. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I ask you by Allah and by Islam, do you know that the mosque had become small, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Who will buy the land of such-and-such people and give it for the expansion of the mosque? In exchange for it, he will get Paradise.' So I bought it from my wealth and expanded the mosque with it, and today you are preventing me from praying two rak'ahs in that mosque." The people replied: Allah knows that it is so. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I ask you by Allah and by Islam, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on the mountain of Thabir in Makkah, and with him were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar, and I, and during that time the mountain began to shake and some stones fell down, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck it with his foot and said: 'Stay firm, for upon you is a Prophet, a Siddiq, and two martyrs.'" The people said: Allah knows that it is so. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, and said: "Bear witness about me! By the Lord of the Ka'bah! I am a martyr." He said this three times. Here, the wording of the narration is similar to each other.
Hadith 4438
The same narration is transmitted with another chain, however, in this version the following words are added: "I ask you in the name of Allah, do you know that after the death of one of his daughters, the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) married his other daughter to me, and he was pleased with me and happy with me?" The people replied: Allah knows that it is so.

Thumamah bin Hazn Qushayri narrates that I was present near the house of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) looked out from the wall of the house and said: "Bring before me your two companions who are the root of the mischief." When both of them were brought forward, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I ask you both by Allah's name, do you know that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, the mosque became too small for the worshippers, so he said: 'Who will buy this land from his wealth and dedicate it for the Muslims? He will get a better place in Paradise in exchange.' So I bought it from my wealth and dedicated it for the Muslims." The people said: Allah knows that it is so. Then Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Now you are preventing me from even offering two rak'ahs of prayer in this mosque. I ask you by Allah's name, do you know that I provided equipment in the Battle of Tabuk?" They replied: Yes! It is so.
Hadith 4440

The same narration is transmitted with another chain, however, in it are these words: "Where are those two people who incited you against me?" They were brought. In this, these words are additional: Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "I ask you by Allah's name, do you know that when the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came to Madinah Munawwarah, there was no sweet well there except for the well of Rumah? So the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Who will purchase it from his wealth and dedicate it for the Muslims, so that he will receive a better reward for it in Paradise?' So I purchased it from my wealth, and today you are preventing me from drinking water from that very well."

The narrator, Musa bin Hakim, reports that Ibn ‘Amir wrote a letter to Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him). I went to his service, and by that time, those people had already surrounded him. I sewed that letter into my garment and placed it inside my cloak. Then I put on a woman’s dress and, in this way, entered the house of Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). I sat down before him, tore my cloak, and he kept watching. I handed the letter to him; he read it, then turned his face toward the mosque, where Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting on the eastern side of the mosque. He called out: “O Talhah!” Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: “I am here!” Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I ask you by Allah’s name, do you know that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Who will purchase this piece of land and thereby expand the mosque, and in return he will receive this reward?’ So I bought it from my wealth.” Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah knows that it is so. Then Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Now you people are in this mosque in a state of security, and I am in it in a state of fear.” Then Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “O Talhah!” He said: “I am here!” Then Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I ask you by Allah’s name, do you know that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Who will purchase the well of Rumah and dedicate it for the Muslims, and in return he will receive such and such reward?’ So I bought it from my wealth.” He said: Allah knows that it is so. Then Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “O Talhah!” He said: “I am here!” Then Sayyiduna ‘Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I ask you by Allah’s name, do you know that I provided one hundred camels for the expedition of Tabuk?” Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Allah knows that it is so. After this, Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “O Allah! To the best of my knowledge, Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) is oppressed.”

Sayyiduna Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman narrates that when Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) was besieged in his house, he looked out towards the people and made them swear an oath. He said: "Do you know that I was on the mountain of Hira with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it began to shake, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Hira, remain firm! For upon you is a Prophet, a Siddiq, and a martyr.'" The narrator says that the people affirmed his statement. Then Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Who will add to the mosque from his house?' So I bought a house and expanded the mosque through it." The people affirmed his statement. Then Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I ask you by Allah's name, do you know that the water of the well of Rumah was only sold to travelers, and I bought that well and dedicated it for the sake of Allah?" The people replied: Yes! The people affirmed his statement. Then Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I ask you by Allah's name! Do you know that I provided supplies for the Battle of Tabuk and spent such and such amount on it?" The people also affirmed this statement. Then Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I have lived among you for so long, but you have hastened against me, that I should remove the robe that Allah has clothed me with. By Allah! This will never happen."

Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman narrates that Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) looked out from his house, while he was besieged, and said: "I ask you by Allah's name, who was present at that time when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on Mount Hira, and the mountain began to shake, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck it with his foot and said: 'O Hira! Be still, for upon you is a Prophet, a Siddiq, and a martyr.' I was also with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at that time." So some people testified to this (that it was true). Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Whoever was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of the pledge of Ridwan, I ask him by Allah's name, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to the polytheists, did he not say: 'This is my hand and this is Uthman's hand.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the pledge on my behalf." Some people also confirmed this statement of his. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I ask by Allah's name the one who was present when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Who will buy this house and add it to the mosque, and in return he will have a house in Paradise?' So I bought that house from my wealth and expanded the mosque with it." Some people confirmed this statement of his as well. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I ask by Allah's name the one who was present when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was preparing for the Battle of Tabuk, and he said: 'Who will spend today in a way that will be accepted?' So I provided half of the army's equipment from my wealth." Some people also confirmed this statement of his. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I ask by Allah's name the one who was present when the water of Rumah was sold only to travelers, so I bought it from my wealth and dedicated it for the travelers (and for all Muslims)." So some people also confirmed this statement of his.

Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) looked out towards them. After that, the narrator mentioned the hadith as previously stated.

Abu Abdur Rahman Salami narrates that when Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) was besieged, he looked towards the people from the roof of his house and said: "I remind you of Allah, do you not know that when the mountain of Hira began to shake, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Hira! Remain firm! Upon you is a Prophet, a Siddiq, and a martyr.'?" The people replied: "Yes!" Then Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I remind you of Allah, do you not know that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to prepare provisions for the expedition of Tabuk, he said: 'Who will spend such that it will be accepted?' At that time, the people were in difficulty, so I provided one third of the army's provisions." The people replied: "It is so." Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I remind you of Allah and ask, do you not know that water from the well of Rumah could only be drunk in exchange for payment, so I bought it and dedicated it for every wealthy, poor, and traveler?" The people replied: "Yes!" After this, Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) had some other things counted as well.
Hadith 4447
Abu Abdur Rahman Salami narrates that when Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) was besieged, he looked towards the people and said: "I ask you by the name of Allah, and I give this oath only to the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), do you not know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever digs the well of Rumah (i.e., dedicates it as a waqf), he will be granted Paradise.' So I had it dug." Do you not know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever equips the army of Tabuk, he will be granted Paradise.' I had equipped it." So the people confirmed this statement of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever equips the army of Tabuk."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Allah Almighty has already decreed four things: the creation of man, his character, his sustenance, and his death. Now it is not possible for any person to obtain anything beyond this. Giving charity is permissible, whether it has been taken into possession or not.

Bashir bin Muhammad narrates regarding Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) that he gave his garden in charity. His parents came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! We used to live off of it, and we have no other wealth besides it." So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Allah Almighty has accepted your charity and has returned it to your parents." The narrator states: After that, we became its heirs.
Hadith 4450
Bashir bin Muhammad narrates that his grandfather, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), gave all his wealth in charity, and he had no other wealth besides that. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Allah Almighty has accepted your charity on your behalf." Here, in narrating the words, the narrator has reported some different words (and the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:), "And He has returned it to your parents."
Hadith 4451
The same narration is transmitted with another chain, however, in it are these words: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) gave his wealth in charity, so his parents came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after which the narrator mentioned the hadith as previously.
Hadith 4452
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) presented himself before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I give this garden of mine in charity; it is for Allah and His Messenger." Then his parents came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Our livelihood depends on this garden." So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) returned the garden to both of them. Then, when both of them passed away, their children inherited it after them. This narration is "mursal" because Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him), and the narrator Abu Bakr bin Hazm did not live in his time.
Hadith 4453
The same narration is transmitted with another chain, however, in it are these words: This is our master Abdullah bin Zaid, may Allah be pleased with him, the same one to whom the method of giving the adhan was shown in a dream, and then he presented himself before the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
Hadith 4454
Amr bin Salim narrates that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him), who was taught the method of giving the adhan in a dream, gave one of his gardens in charity. He presented himself before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “I have given this garden of mine in charity; it is a vow for Allah and His Messenger.” Then his parents came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Both of them said that their livelihood depended solely on that garden. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned the garden to his parents. Then, when those parents passed away, it was inherited by their heirs.
Hadith 4455
Amr bin Salim narrates that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) gave his garden in charity. He presented himself before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I dedicate this garden of mine to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." (The narrator is in doubt whether the word used here was 'Nabi' or perhaps 'Rasul'.)
Hadith 4456

Sayyiduna ‘Ubada bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man named ‘Abdullah bin so-and-so (the narrator Shu‘ban forgot the name here) came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Everything I own is given in charity, except for my horse and my weapons.” The narrator states: He also had some land. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) took possession of it and designated it as endowment (i.e., as financial assistance for various people). His parents came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: “Give us something to eat from the wealth our son gave in charity. By Allah! We have nothing else besides this, and we go around seeking endowments.” So the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) took that garden and handed it over to both of them. Then, when both of them passed away, their son became the heir, the one who had given it in charity. He came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! The thing I gave in charity, which you returned to my parents, now that both of them have passed away, is it lawful for me?” The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Yes! Eat from it with happiness.”
