مَا جَاءَ فِي شُرْبِ مَاءِ زَمْزَمَ
What is reported regarding drinking Zamzam water
Hadith 2736
ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكَّارِ بْنِ الرَّيَّانِ ، نا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا أَبُو زِيَادٍ ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ الأَسْوَدِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ : مِنْ أَيْنَ جِئْتَ ؟ فَقَالَ شَرِبْتُ : مِنْ زَمْزَمَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : أَشَرِبْتَ مِنْهَا كَمَا يَنْبَغِي ؟ قَالَ : وَكَيْفَ ذَاكَ يَا ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ؟ قَالَ : إِذَا شَرِبْتَ مِنْهَا فَاسْتَقْبِلِ الْقِبْلَةَ وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ ، وَتَنَفَّسَ ثَلاثًا وَتَضَلَّعْ مِنْهَا ، فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَاحْمَدِ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " آيَةٌ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ أَنَّهُمْ لا يَتَضَلَّعُونَ مِنْ زَمْزَمَ " .
Abdullah bin Abu Mulaika narrates: A man came to the service of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked him: "Where have you come from?" He replied: "I have come after drinking the water of Zamzam." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked him: "Did you drink it in the manner it should be drunk?" He asked: "O Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas! How is that (to be drunk)?" So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas said: "When you drink it, face the Qiblah and mention the name of Allah, then drink it in three breaths and drink in abundance. When you have finished drinking it, praise Allah, because the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The fundamental difference between us and the hypocrites is that they (the hypocrites) do not drink Zamzam in abundance."
Hadith 2737
ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، نا أحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ الرَّمَادِيُّ ، نا محَمَّدٌ ، نا إسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ الأَسْوَدِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، نَحْوَهُ . عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
This narration is also transmitted with another chain of transmission.
Hadith 2738
نا نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، نا عَبَّاسٌ التَّرْقُفِيُّ ، نا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْعَدَنِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنِي الْحَكَمُ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، قَالَ : كَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ إِذَا شَرِبَ مِنْ زَمْزَمَ ، قَالَ : " اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَرِزْقًا وَاسِعًا وَشِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ " .
Ikrimah narrates: When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to drink Zamzam water, he would supplicate: "O Allah! I ask You for beneficial knowledge, I ask You for abundant provision, and I ask You for healing from every disease."
Hadith 2739
ثنا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هِشَامِ بْنِ عِيسَى الْمَرْوَزِيُّ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ الْجَارُودِيُّ ، نا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ لِمَا شَرِبَ لَهُ ، إِنْ شَرِبْتَهُ تَسْتَشْفِي بِهِ شَفَاكَ اللَّهُ ، وَإِنْ شَرِبْتَهُ لِشِبَعِكَ أَشْبَعَكَ اللَّهُ بِهِ ، وَإِنْ شَرِبْتَهُ لِيَقْطَعَ ظَمَأَكَ قَطَعَهُ اللَّهُ ، وَهِيَ هَزَمَةُ جِبْرِيلَ وَسُقْيَا اللَّهِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ " .
Mujahid narrates this statement from Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the water of Zamzam is drunk, if you drink it seeking cure, Allah will grant you cure; if you drink it to fill your stomach, Allah will satisfy your hunger; and if you drink it to quench your thirst, Allah will quench your thirst. It is the result of the strike of Jibreel (Gabriel), and through it Allah quenched the thirst of Isma'il."
