بَابُ كَفَّارَةِ مَنْ أَتَى أَهْلَهُ فِي رَمَضَانَ
Chapter on the expiation for one who has intercourse with his wife in Ramadan
Hadith 2395
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، وَعُمَرُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالا : ثنا الْمُنْذِرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْذِرِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنِي أبِي ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا أَتَى إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، هَلَكْتُ ، فَقَالَ : " وَمَا أَهْلَكَكَ ؟ " ، قَالَ : أَتَيْتُ أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ ، قَالَ : " هَلْ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً ؟ " ، قَالَ : لا ، قَالَ : " فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ " ، قَالَ : لا أُطِيقُ الصِّيَامَ ، قَالَ : " فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا لِكُلِّ مِسْكِينٍ مَدًّا " ، قَالَ : مَا أَجِدُ ، فَأَمَرَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِخَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا ، قَالَ : " أَطْعِمْهُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا " ، قَالَ : وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا بِالْمَدِينَةِ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا ، قَالَ : " فَانْطَلِقْ فَكُلْهُ أَنْتَ وَعِيَالُكَ ، فَقَدْ كَفَّرَ اللَّهُ عَنْكَ " .
Muhammad bin Hasan, from his father (Hasan), from his father (Imam Zain al-Abidin, may Allah have mercy on him), from his grandfather (Imam Husayn, may Allah be pleased with him), narrates the statement of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him: A man came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I have been ruined." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked, "What has caused your ruin?" He replied, "I had intercourse with my wife during Ramadan (while fasting)." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked, "Do you have a slave or a bondwoman?" He replied, "No!" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Then fast for two consecutive months." He replied, "I do not have the strength to fast." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Then feed sixty needy people, each needy person one mudd." He replied, "I do not have the means for that." So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed that he be given fifteen sa’ (of food). The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Feed this to sixty needy people." He replied, "By Him who has sent you with the truth! There is no family in the whole city more in need than ours." So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Go, you and your family eat from it, Allah the Exalted has paid the expiation on your behalf."
Hadith 2396
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ شَبِيبٍ ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي أُوَيْسٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ ، قَالا : ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : أَفْطَرْتُ يَوْمًا مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ مُتَعَمِّدًا ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً ، أَوْ صُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ ، أَوْ أَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا " .
‘Amir bin Sa’d narrates from his father (Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him): A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “I deliberately did not fast for one day in the month of Ramadan.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Free a slave, or fast for two months, or feed sixty poor people.”
Hadith 2397
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى ، ثنا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا أَفْطَرَ فِي رَمَضَانَ ، فَأَمَرَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ بِعِتْقِ رَقَبَةٍ ، أَوْ صِيَامِ شَهْرَيْنِ ، أَوْ إِطْعَامِ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا " ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ : لا أَجِدُ ، فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِعَرَقِ تَمْرٍ ، فَقَالَ : " خُذْ هَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ " ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي لا أَجِدُ أَحَدًا أَحْوَجَ إِلَيْهِ مِنِّي ، فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " كُلْهُ " . تَابَعَهُ يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الأَنْصَارِيُّ ، وَابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، وَأَبُو أُوَيْسٍ ، وَفُلَيْحُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، وَعُمَرُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ الْمَخْزُومِيُّ ، وَيَزِيدُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ ، وَشِبْلٌ ، وَاللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، مِنْ رِوَايَةِ أَشْهَبَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ عَنْهُ . وَابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، مِنْ رِوَايَةِ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ حَمَّادٍ عَنْهُ . وَإِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، مِنْ رِوَايَةِ عَمَّارِ بْنِ مَطَرٍ عَنْهُ . وَعُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي زِيَادٍ ، إِلا أَنَّهُ أَرْسَلَهُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، كُلُّ هَؤُلاءِ رَوَوْهُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا أَفْطَرَ فِي رَمَضَانَ وَجَعَلُوا كَفَّارَتُهُ عَلَى التَّخْيِيرِ . وَخَالَفَهُمْ أَكْثَرُ مِنْهُمْ عَدَدًا ، فَرَوَوْهُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ ، أَنَّ إِفْطَارَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلِ كَانَ بِجِمَاعٍ ، وَأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَهُ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ بِعِتْقِ رَقَبَةٍ ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَإِطْعَامُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ، مِنْهُمْ عِرَاكُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ ، وَعُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، وَإِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَتِيقٍ ، وَمُوسَى بْنُ عُقْبَةَ ، وَمَعْمَرٌ ، وَيُونُسُ ، وَعُقَيْلٌ ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ مُسَافِرٍ ، وَالأَوْزَاعِيُّ ، وَشُعَيْبُ بْنُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ ، وَمَنْصُورٌ ، وَسُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، وَإِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، وَاللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عِيسَى ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، وَالنُّعْمَانُ بْنُ رَاشِدٍ ، وَحَجَّاجُ بْنُ أَرْطَأَةَ ، وَصَالِحُ بْنُ أَبِي الأَخْضَرِ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَفْصَةَ ، وَعَبْدُ الْجَبَّارِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الْعَوَضِيُّ ، وَهَيَّارُ بْنُ عَقِيلٍ ، وَثَابِتُ بْنُ ثَوْبَانَ ، وَقُرَّةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، وَزَمْعَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ ، وَبَحْرٌ السِّقَاءُ ، وَالْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، وَشُعَيْبُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، وَنُوحُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ، وَغَيْرُهُمْ.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man broke his fast in the month of Ramadan, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed him as expiation: "Free a slave, or fast for two months, or feed sixty needy people." The narrator states: The man said, "I do not have the means for this." Then a sack of dates was brought to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said, "Take this and give it as charity." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah! I do not know anyone more in need of it than myself." So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled, until his molar teeth became visible, then he said, "Eat it yourself." Some narrators have mentioned in this narration that the man had broken his fast in Ramadan and was given the choice regarding the expiation (to choose any one of the three options mentioned above), but most narrators have mentioned that the man broke his fast by having intercourse, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) first instructed him to expiate by freeing a slave; when he did not have the means for that, he was instructed to fast for two months; when he was unable to do that as well, he was ordered to feed sixty needy people.
Hadith 2398
حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الدَّقَّاقُ ، نا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَلَفٍ ، ثنا أَبُو ثَوْرٍ ، ثنا مُعَلَّى بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، أَخْبَرَهُ حُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، يَقُولُ : أَتَى رَجُلٌ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : هَلَكْتُ وَأَهْلَكْتُ ، قَالَ : " مَا أَهْلَكَكَ ؟ " ، قَالَ : وَقَعْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ ، قَالَ : " تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً تُعْتِقُهَا ؟ " ، قَالَ : لا ، قَالَ : " فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ " ، قَالَ : لا أَسْتَطِيعُ ، قَالَ : " فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا " ، قَالَ : لا أَقْدِرُ عَلَيْهِ ، قَالَ : فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ ، فَقَالَ : " تَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا " ، قَالَ : أَعْلَى أَحْوَجَ مِنَّا ؟ قَالَ : " فَأَطْعِمْهُ عِيَالَكَ " . تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ أَبُو ثَوْرٍ ، عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ ، بِقَوْلِهِ : وَأَهْلَكْتُ . وَكُلُّهُمْ ثِقَاتٌ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "I am ruined." (Perhaps these are the words:) "I have brought destruction upon myself." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What has caused your ruin?" (Perhaps these are the words.) He said, "I had intercourse with my wife during the fast in Ramadan." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do you have a slave whom you can free?" He replied, "No!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then fast for two consecutive months." He replied, "I am not able to do that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then feed sixty needy people." He replied, "I do not have the ability to do that either." Then a sack of dates was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said, "Give this as charity." He replied, "I do not know anyone more in need than myself (i.e., I am the one most in need of it)." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Feed it to your family."
Hadith 2399
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي أُوَيْسٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، أَنَّ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ مُسْلِمٍ أَخْبَرَهُ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، حَدَّثَهُ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ رَجُلا أَفْطَرَ فِي رَمَضَانَ ، الْحَدِيثَ نَحْوَهُ ، وَزَادَ فِيهِ : " كُلْهُ وَصُمْ يَوْمًا " . أَنَّ تَابَعَهُ عَبْدُ الْجَبَّارِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed a person who broke his fast in Ramadan (after this, the narrator mentioned the hadith as previously stated), however, in this narration, these additional words are present: "You eat it and keep a fast for one day."
Hadith 2400
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ الْفَقِيهُ ، ثنا بَكَّارُ بْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ، وحَاجِبُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، قَالا : نا مُؤَمَّلُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، وَقَعْتُ بِامْرَأَتِي فِي رَمَضَانَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً " ، قَالَ : لا أَجِدُ ، قَالَ : " فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ " ، قَالَ : لا أَسْتَطِيعُ ، قَالَ : " أَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا " ، قَالَ : لا أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمِكْتَلٍ فِيهِ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ ، قَالَ : خُذْ هَذَا فَأَطْعِمْهُ عَنْكَ ، قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَا بَيْنَ لابَتَيْهَا أَحْوَجُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَّا ، قَالَ : " فَخُذْهُ فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ " . لَفْظُ بَكَّارٍ . تَابَعَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَفْصَةَ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ .
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "I have had intercourse with my wife during Ramadan (while fasting)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Free a slave." He said, "I do not have one." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Fast for two consecutive months." He said, "I am not able to do that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Feed sixty needy people." He said, "I cannot do that either." The narrator states: A basket containing fifteen sa’ of dates was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said, "Take this and give it as charity on your behalf." He said, "O Messenger of Allah! In the whole city, no one is more in need of it than us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then feed it to your family." These are the words of the narrator named Bakkar, and the narrator named Muhammad bin Abu Hafsah has also followed him in transmitting it.
Hadith 2401
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، وَالْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، وَأَبُو أُمَيَّةَ ، قَالُوا : نا رَوْحٌ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَفْصَةَ ، وَقَالَ فِيهِ : بِزِنْبِيلٍ ، وَالْمِكْتَلُ فِيهِ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا أَحْسَبُهُ تَمْرًا . وَكَذَلِكَ قَالَ : هِقْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ ، وَالْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنِ الأَوْزَاعِيِّ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ . وَتَابَعَهُمْ حَجَّاجُ بْنُ أَرْطَاةَ ، وَهِشَامُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، إِلا أَنَّهُ قَالَ : عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ.
The same narration is also transmitted with another chain, however, in it are these words: "A large basket was brought and there was a measure in which there were fifteen sa‘," and also, "There were fifteen sa‘ of dates." Similarly, other narrators have also transmitted it, and other narrators have followed in transmitting it.
Hadith 2402
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ ، وَالْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَبِي الرَّبِيعِ ، قَالا : نا أَبُو عَامِرٍ الْعَقَدِيُّ ، ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا أَتَى إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَحَدَّثَهُ أَنَّهُ وَقَعَ بِأَهْلِهِ فِي رَمَضَانَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ : " أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً " ، قَالَ : لا أَجِدُهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ " ، قَالَ : مَا أَسْتَطِيعُ ، قَالَ : " فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا " ، قَالَ : مَا أَجِدُ ذَلِكَ ، قَالَ : فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمِكْتَلٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ قَدْرَ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا ، فَقَالَ : " خُذْ هَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ " ، قَالَ : عَلَى أَحْوَجَ مِنِّي وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِي فَمَا أَجِدُ أَحْوَجَ مِنِّي وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِي ، قَالَ : " كُلْهُ أَنْتَ وَأَهْلُ بَيْتِكَ ، وَصُمْ يَوْمًا ، وَاسْتَغْفِرِ اللَّهَ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him that he had intercourse with his wife during Ramadan (while fasting). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Free a slave." He replied: "O Messenger of Allah! I do not have that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then fast for two consecutive months." He said: "I am not able to do that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then feed sixty needy people." He replied: "I do not have the ability to do that either." The narrator states: Then a container was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which there were fifteen sa’ of dates. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take it and give it as charity." He replied: "Should I give it to someone more needy than myself and my family? There is no one more needy than me and my family." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then eat it yourself and let your family eat it, and fast for one day and seek forgiveness from Allah the Exalted."
