بَابُ السِّوَاكِ لِلصَّائِمِ
Chapter on using the siwak while fasting
Hadith 2366
حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ الصَّيْدَلانِيُّ ، ثنا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ حَامِدُ بْنُ الشَّاذِي الْكَجِّيُّ ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْبَلْخِيُّ أَخُو عِصَامِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ ، ثنا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ الْخُوَارِزْمِيُّ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ عَاصِمًا الأَحْوَلَ أَيَسْتَاكُ الصَّائِمُ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ " ، قُلْتُ : " بِرَطْبِ السِّوَاكِ وَيَابِسِهِ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ " ، قُلْتُ : " أَوَّلَ النَّهَارِ وَآخِرَهُ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ " ، قُلْتُ : " عَمَّنْ ؟ قَالَ : عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " . أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ الْخُوَارِزْمِيُّ ضَعِيفٌ.
Abu Ishaq Khwarizmi narrates: I asked Asim Ahwal, "Can a fasting person use a miswak?" He replied, "Yes!" I asked, "Can he use both a fresh and a dry miswak?" He replied, "Yes!" I asked, "Can he use it in both the early and the later part of the day?" He replied, "Yes!" I asked, "From whom is this reported?" He replied, "It is reported from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on the authority of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him)." The narrator of this narration, Abu Ishaq Khwarizmi, is weak.
Hadith 2367
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، ثنا شَرِيكُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : " رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْتَاكُ وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ " . عَاصِمُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، غَيْرُهُ أَثْبَتُ مِنْهُ.
Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi'ah narrates from his father: "I saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) using a miswak while fasting." Other narrators are more reliable compared to Asim bin Ubaidullah.
Hadith 2368
حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ بُهْلُولٍ ، ثنا جَدِّي ، ثنا ابْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : " رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا لا أُحْصِي يَتَسَوَّكُ وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ " .
Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi’ah narrates from his father: “I have seen the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) using the miswak several times while fasting.”
Hadith 2369
حَدَّثَنَاهُ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ بُهْلُولٍ ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، وَوَكِيعٌ ، وَأَبُو دَاوُدَ الْحَفَرِيُّ ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ بِنْتِ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدَ ، وَقَبِيصَةُ ، وَإِسْحَاقُ الأَزْرَقُ ، قَالُوا : ثنا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، بِإِسْنَادِهِ مِثْلَهُ.
This narration is also transmitted with some other chains of transmission.
Hadith 2370
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْخَيَّاط ، ثنا أَبُو مَنْصُورٍ ، ثنا عُمَرُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : لَكَ السِّوَاكُ إِلَى الْعَصْرِ فَإِذَا صَلَّيْتَ الْعَصْرَ فَأَلْقِهِ ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " خُلُوفُ فَمِ الصَّائِمِ أَطْيَبُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنْ رِيحِ الْمِسْكِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "You are permitted to use the miswak until the ‘Asr prayer; when you have performed ‘Asr, then put it aside. The smell from the mouth of a fasting person is purer to Allah Almighty than the fragrance of musk."
Hadith 2371
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْقَاضِي الْمَحَامِلِيُّ ، وَيُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ بُهْلُولٍ ، وَابْنُ عَيَّاشٍ الْقَطَّانُ ، وَابْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، وَجَمَاعَةٌ ، قَالُوا : ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَرَفَةَ ، قَالا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْمُؤَدِّبُ ، عَنْ مُجَالِدٍ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " خَيْرُ خِصَالِ الصَّائِمِ السِّوَاكُ " . وَفِي حَدِيثِ ابْنِ مَنِيعٍ : " مِنْ خَيْرِ خِصَالِ الصَّائِمِ السِّوَاكُ " . مُجَالِدٌ غَيْرُهُ أَثْبَتُ مِنْهُ.
Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best deed for a fasting person is using the miswak." In another narration, these words are mentioned: "Among the best deeds of a fasting person is using the miswak." The other narrators are more reliable than the narrator named Mujalid.
Hadith 2372
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا أَبُو خُرَاسَانَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ السَّكَنِ ، ثنا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ ، ثنا أَبُو عُمَرَ الْقَصَّارُ كَيْسَانُ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ بِلالٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : " إِذَا صُمْتُمْ فَاسْتَاكُوا بِالْغَدَاةِ وَلا تَسْتَاكُوا بِالْعَشِيِّ ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ صَائِمٍ تَيَبَّسُ شَفَتَاهُ بِالْعَشِيِّ إِلا كَانَتْ نُورًا بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When you fast, use the miswak in the morning, but do not use the miswak in the evening. The reason is that if a fasting person's lips are dry in the evening, then this will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection."
Hadith 2373
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خُرَاسَانَ ، ثنا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ ، ثنا كَيْسَانُ أَبُو عُمَرَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ خَبَّابٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِثْلَهُ . كَيْسَانُ أَبُو عُمَرَ لَيْسَ بِالْقَوِيِّ ، وَمَنْ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ عَلِيٍّ غَيْرُ مَعْرُوفٍ.
The same narration is also transmitted with another chain from Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator named Abu ‘Umar Kaysan is not reliable, and the narrator between him and Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is not known.
