Hadith 2353
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بِشْرِ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْقَطَّانُ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ نَذَرَ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ لَيْلَةً فِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَوْفِ بِنَذْرِكَ " . هَذَا إِسْنَادٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had made a vow in the days of ignorance to perform i'tikaf for one night in Masjid al-Haram. He asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, so he said: "Fulfill your vow." Its chain of narration is authentic.
Hadith 2354
وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُلَيْحِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، كَانَ نَذَرَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ لَيْلَةً فِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ الإِسْلامُ سَأَلَ عَنْهُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ : " أَوْفِ بِنَذْرِكَ " . فَاعْتَكَفَ عُمَرُ لَيْلَةً . إِسْنَادٌ ثَابِتٌ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) had made a vow in the days of ignorance that he would perform i'tikaf (spiritual retreat) for one night in Masjid al-Haram. When the era of Islam came, he asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about this matter, so he said: "Fulfill your vow." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) performed i'tikaf for one night. Its chain of narration is authentic.
Hadith 2355
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ السُّوسِيُّ ، مِنْ كِتَابِهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ نَصْرٍ الرَّمْلِيُّ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي عُمَرَ ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنِ أَبِي سُهَيْلٍ عَمِّ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لَيْسَ عَلَى الْمُعْتَكِفِ صِيَامٌ ، إِلا أَنْ يَجْعَلَهُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ " . رَفَعَهُ هَذَا الشَّيْخُ ، وَغَيْرُهُ لا يَرْفَعُهُ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not obligatory for the person observing i'tikaf to fast, except if he makes (fasting) obligatory upon himself, then the ruling will be different." The Shaykh has transmitted this narration as a marfu' hadith, whereas other narrators have not transmitted it as a marfu' hadith.
Hadith 2356
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُمَيْرِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ ، فِي الإِجَازَةِ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ هَاشِمٍ ، حَدَّثَهُمْ ، ثنا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لا اعْتِكَافَ إِلا بِصِيَامٍ " . تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ سُوَيْدٌ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ حُسَيْنٍ.
Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I'tikaf is only valid along with fasting." In narrating this, the narrator named Suwayh is unique.
Hadith 2357
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُبَشِّرٍ ، ثنا عَمَّارُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ الأَزْرَقُ ، عَنْ جُوَيْبِرٍ ، عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " كُلُّ مَسْجِدٍ لَهُ مُؤَذِّنٌ وَإِمَامٌ فَالاعْتِكَافُ فِيهِ يَصْلُحُ " . الضَّحَّاكُ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنْ حُذَيْفَةَ.
Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Every mosque in which there is a muezzin and an imam, i'tikaf can be observed in it." The narrator of this narration, Dahhak, did not hear hadith from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith 2358
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، ثنا شُجَاعُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : " الْمُعْتَكِفُ يَشْهَدُ الْجُمُعَةَ ، وَيَتْبَعُ الْجِنَازَةَ ، وَيَعُودُ الْمَرِيضَ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "A person observing i'tikaf may participate in the Friday prayer, may attend a funeral, and may visit the sick."
Hadith 2359
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، ثنا مُحْرِزُ بْنُ عَوْنٍ ، ثنا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ ، أَوْ عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : " الْمُعْتَكِفُ يَعُودُ الْمَرِيضَ ، وَيَشْهَدُ الْجِنَازَةَ ، وَيَأْتِي الْجُمُعَةَ وَيَأْتِي أَهْلَهُ ، وَلا يُجَالِسُهُمْ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "A person observing i'tikaf may visit the sick, attend funerals, go for Jumu'ah, and go to his house (but he cannot stay with them for long)."
Hadith 2360
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ بُهْلُولٍ ، ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ الْعَنْقَرِيُّ ، ثنا أبِي ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بُدَيْلٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّبَّاحُ ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْعَنْقَرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بُدَيْلٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ اعْتِكَافٍ عَلَيْهِ ، " فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ وَيَصُومَ " . تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ ابْنُ بُدَيْلٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو ، وَهُوَ ضَعِيفُ الْحَدِيثِ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates regarding Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): He asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the i'tikaf that was obligatory upon him, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed him: "He should perform i'tikaf and also fast." In narrating this report, the narrator named Ibn Badeel is unique, and he is weak.
Hadith 2361
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، وَابْنُ عَيَّاشٍ ، قَالا : نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، ثنا أَبُو عَامِرٍ ، نا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بُدَيْلٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ قَالَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ أَنْ أَعْتَكِفَ يَوْمًا ، قَالَ : " اعْتَكِفْ وَصُمْ " . سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيَّ ، يَقُولُ : هَذَا حَدِيثٌ مُنْكَرٌ ، لأَنَّ الثِّقَاتِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ لَمْ يَذْكُرُوهُ ، مِنْهُمُ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، وَابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، وَحَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، وَحَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ وَغَيْرُهُمْ ، وَابْنُ بُدَيْلٍ ضَعِيفُ الْحَدِيثِ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated this: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "I had made a vow to observe i'tikaf for one day." So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Observe i'tikaf and also fast." I heard Shaykh Abu Bakr Nishapuri saying, he said: This hadith is munkar, because the reliable students of Amr bin Dinar did not narrate it, among whom are Ibn Jurayj, Ibn Uyaynah, Hammad bin Salamah, Hammad bin Zayd, and others, while its narrator Ibn Budayl is weak.
Hadith 2362
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي مَيْسَرَةَ ، ثنا أبِي ، ثنا هِشَامٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي الزُّهْرِيُّ ، عَنْ حَدِيثِ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، وَسَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ ، ثُمَّ لَمْ يَزَلْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to observe i'tikaf during the last ten days of the month of Ramadan, and this practice continued in the same way until he passed away.
Hadith 2363
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُجَشِّرٍ ، ثنا عَبِيدَةُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ ، ثنا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ مَعْنٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعِيدِ التُّبَّعِيُّ ، ثنا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ ، ثنا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ مَعْنٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، وَعَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّهَا أَخْبَرَتْهُمَا ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ الْعَشْرَ الأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللَّهُ ، ثُمَّ اعْتَكَفَهُنَّ أَزْوَاجُهُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ ، وَأَنَّ السُّنَّةَ لِلْمُعْتَكِفِ أَنْ لا يَخْرُجَ إِلا لِحَاجَةِ الإِنْسَانِ ، وَلا يَتْبَعُ جِنَازَةً ، وَلا يَعُودُ مَرِيضًا ، وَلا يَمَسُّ امْرَأَةً ، وَلا يُبَاشِرُهَا ، وَلا اعْتِكَافَ إِلا فِي مَسْجِدِ جَمَاعَةٍ ، وَيَأْمُرُ مَنِ اعْتَكَفَ أَنْ يَصُومَ " . يُقَالُ : إِنَّ قَوْلَهُ : وَأَنَّ السُّنَّةَ لِلْمُعْتَكِفِ إِلَى آخِرِهِ ، لَيْسَ مِنْ قَوْلِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَأَنَّهُ مِنْ كَلامِ الزُّهْرِيِّ وَمَنْ أَدْرَجَهُ فِي الْحَدِيثِ فَقَدْ وَهِمَ . وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ ، وَهِشَامُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ لَمْ يَذْكُرْهُ.
Urwah bin Zubair and Sa'id bin al-Musayyib have narrated this: Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) informed them that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to observe i'tikaf during the last ten days of the month of Ramadan, until Allah caused him to pass away. After him, his wives also observed i'tikaf during these days. And the Sunnah for the person observing i'tikaf is: "He should only leave (the place of i'tikaf) for the fulfillment of necessary needs, he should not participate in funeral processions, nor visit the sick, he should not touch a woman nor have intercourse with her, and i'tikaf can only be observed in a mosque where congregational prayers are held, and the person observing i'tikaf should also be instructed to fast." According to one statement, these words of the narration: "The Sunnah for the person observing i'tikaf is," from here to the end of the narration, are not the words of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), but rather the words of (the narrator) al-Zuhri, who included them in the hadith itself, which caused this confusion. Allah knows best. The narrator named Hisham bin Sulayman did not mention this.
Hadith 2364
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا يُوسُفُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي الزُّهْرِيُّ ، عَنِ الاعْتِكَافِ وَكَيْفَ سُنَّتِهِ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، وَعُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَخْبَرَتْهُمَا ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ الْعَشْرَ الأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللَّهُ ، ثُمَّ اعْتَكَفَ أَزْوَاجُهُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ ، وَأَنَّ السُّنَّةَ فِي الْمُعْتَكِفِ أَنْ لا يَخْرُجَ إِلا لِحَاجَةِ الإِنْسَانِ ، وَلا يَتْبَعُ جِنَازَةً ، وَلا يَعُودُ مَرِيضًا ، وَلا يَمَسُّ امْرَأَةً ، وَلا يُبَاشِرُهَا ، وَلا اعْتِكَافَ إِلا فِي مَسْجِدِ جَمَاعَةٍ ، وَسُنَّةُ مَنِ اعْتَكَفَ أَنْ يَصُومَ " .
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to observe i'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan, until Allah Almighty caused him to pass away. After him, his wives observed i'tikaf. And the Sunnah for the one observing i'tikaf is: "He may only leave (the place of i'tikaf) to fulfill the call of nature; he will not participate in funeral processions, nor visit the sick; he may not touch his wife, nor have intercourse with her. I'tikaf is only to be observed in a place where congregational prayer is established, and it is Sunnah for the one observing i'tikaf to fast."
Hadith 2365
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو طَالِبٍ الْحَافِظُ ، ثنا هِلالُ بْنُ الْعَلاءِ ، ثنا أبِي ، ثنا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ نَذَرَ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ فِي الشِّرْكِ وَيَصُومَ ، فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدَ إِسْلامِهِ ، فَقَالَ : " أَوْفِ بِنَذْرِكَ " . وَهَذَا إِسْنَادٌ حَسَنٌ ، تَفَرَّدَ بِهَذَا اللَّفْظِ سَعِيدُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had made a vow during the time of ignorance (before accepting Islam) that he would perform i'tikaf and fast. After accepting Islam, he asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about this matter, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fulfill your vow." Its chain is Hasan. Sa'id bin Bishr is the only narrator who has transmitted it in these words.
