Hadith 2146
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ يَحْيَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ صَاعِدٍ ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَتِيقٍ الْعَنْسِيُّ ، بِدِمَشْقَ ، ثنا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ ، ثنا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : " تَرَاءَى النَّاسُ الْهِلالَ ، فَأَخْبَرْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنِّي رَأَيْتُهُ ، فَصَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَمَرَ النَّاسَ بِالصِّيَامِ " . تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ وَهُوَ ثِقَةٌ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The people went out to sight the moon. I informed the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): I have also seen the moon. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself fasted and ordered the people to fast as well. Marwan bin Muhammad has narrated this report from Ibn Wahb, and he is unique in transmitting it, and this narrator is trustworthy.
Hadith 2147
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ مِرْدَاسٍ ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ، ثنا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السَّمَرْقَنْدِيُّ ، قَالا : نا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، بِهَذَا.
This narration is also transmitted with another chain of transmission.
Hadith 2148
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ الْقَطَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الأُبُلِّيُّ ، ثنا مِسْعَرُ بْنُ كِدَامٍ ، وَأَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ ، قَالَ : شَهِدْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ وَبِهَا ابْنُ عُمَرَ ، وَابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ، فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى وَالِيهَا فَشَهِدَ عِنْدَهُ عَلَى رُؤْيَةِ الْهِلالِ هِلالِ رَمَضَانَ ، فَسَأَلَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ ، وَابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ شَهَادَتِهِ فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يُجِيزَهُ ، وَقَالا : " إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَجَازَ شَهَادَةَ رَجُلٍ وَاحِدٍ عَلَى رُؤْيَةِ الْهِلالِ هِلالِ رَمَضَانَ " ، قَالا : " وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لا يُجِيزُ شَهَادَةَ الإِفْطَارِ إِلا بِشَهَادَةِ رَجُلَيْنِ " . تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الأُبُلِّيُّ أَبُو إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، وَهُوَ ضَعِيفُ الْحَدِيثِ.
Tawoos narrates: I was present in Madinah Munawwarah, and there were also Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them). A person came to the governor there and gave testimony of sighting the moon (i.e., the moon of Ramadan). So the governor asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) about the testimony of this person. Both of them said: His testimony should be accepted. Then both of them stated that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had accepted the testimony of one person regarding the sighting of the Ramadan moon. Both of these gentlemen also stated that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to accept the testimony of only two men regarding the moon of Eid al-Fitr. In narrating this report, the narrator named Abu Isma'il Hafs is unique, and he is weak.
Hadith 2149
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بِشْرِ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَيْسٍ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَتَحَفَّظُ مِنْ هِلالِ شَعْبَانَ مَا لا يَتَحَفَّظُ مِنْ غَيْرِهِ ، ثُمَّ يَصُومُ رَمَضَانَ لِرُؤْيَتِهِ ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْهِ عَدَّ ثَلاثِينَ يَوْمًا ثُمَّ صَامَ " . هَذَا إِسْنَادٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to pay as much attention to the crescent of Sha'ban as he did to the crescent of Ramadan. Then he would fast upon sighting the crescent. If it was cloudy, he would complete the count of thirty days and then begin fasting. The chain of this hadith is Hasan Sahih (good and authentic).
Hadith 2150
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ بُهْلُولٍ ، ثنا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ ، ثنا أَبُو خَالِدٍ الأَحْمَرُ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ صِلَةَ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا عِنْدَ عَمَّارٍ فَأُتِيَ بِشَاةٍ مَصْلِيَّةٍ ، فَقَالَ " كُلُوا " ، فَتَنَحَّى بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ ، فَقَالَ : إِنِّي صَائِمٌ ، فَقَالَ عَمَّارٌ : " مَنْ صَامَ الْيَوْمَ الَّذِي شَكَّ فِيهِ فَقَدْ عَصَى أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " . هَذَا إِسْنَادٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ، وَرُوَاتُهُ كُلُّهُمْ ثِقَاتٌ.
Sila narrates: We were present with Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) when roasted goat meat was brought for him, and he told us to eat. One person withdrew, so he (Ammar) said: "Whoever fasts on the day when there is doubt about (the beginning of) Ramadan, he has disobeyed Sayyiduna Abu al-Qasim (the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him)." This hadith is Hasan Sahih, and all the narrators of this hadith are trustworthy.
Hadith 2151
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْبَخْتَرِيِّ ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْخَلِيلِ ، ثنا الْوَاقِدِيُّ ، ثنا دَاوُدُ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنِ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : " نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ صَوْمِ سِتَّةٍ : الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي يُشَكُّ فِيهِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ ، وَيَوْمُ الْفِطْرِ ، وَيَوْمُ الأَضْحَى ، وَأَيَّامُ التَّشْرِيقِ " . الْوَاقِدِيُّ غَيْرُهُ أَثْبَتُ مِنْهُ.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting on six days (the day about which there is doubt), the day of Eid al-Fitr, the day of Eid al-Adha, and the days of Tashreeq. Among the narrators of this hadith, other narrators are more reliable than Waqidi.
Hadith 2152
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَامِدٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَالِيَةِ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ الْهَيْثَمِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ الْعَبْدِيُّ ، ثنا أَبُو قُتَيْبَةَ ، ثنا حَازِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : تَمَارَى النَّاسُ فِي هِلالِ رَمَضَانَ ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمُ : الْيَوْمَ ، وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ : غَدًا ، فَجَاءَ أَعْرَابِيُّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَزَعَمَ أَنَّهُ قَدْ رَآهُ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ؟ " ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، فَأَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِلالا فَنَادَى النَّاسَ : صُومُوا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَعُدُّوا ثَلاثِينَ ثُمَّ أَفْطِرُوا ، وَلا تَصُومُوا قَبْلَهُ يَوْمًا " . تَابَعَهُ الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَوْرٍ ، وَزَائِدَةُ ، وَالثَّوْرِيُّ ، مِنْ رِوَايَةَ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ مُوسَى عَنْهُ ، وَقِيلَ عَنْ أَبِي عَاصِمٍ . وَأَرْسَلَهُ إِسْرَائِيلُ ، وَحَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، وَابْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، وَأَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ . وأَرْسَلَهُ إِسْرَائِيلُ ، وَحَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، وَابْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، وَأَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ.
Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: There was a difference among the people regarding the sighting of the Ramadan moon. Some said: It will be seen today, others said: It will be seen tomorrow. A Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: I have seen the moon. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: "Do you bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah?" He replied: Yes! So the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to announce among the people that they should begin fasting. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Begin fasting upon seeing it (the moon) and end fasting upon seeing it. If clouds cover you, then complete the count of thirty days, begin fasting, and do not fast a day before it." This narration is also transmitted with some other chains. Some narrators have also transmitted this narration as a mursal narration.
Hadith 2153
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ زَكَرِيَّا ، ثنا عَبَّادُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ، ثنا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَوْرٍ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : رَأَيْتُ الْهِلالَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ ؟ " ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : " أَتَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ؟ " ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : " يَا بِلالُ ، نَادِ فِي النَّاسِ فَلْيَصُومُوا غَدًا " .
Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates: A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: I have seen the moon. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: “Do you bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?” He replied: Yes! The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “O Bilal! Announce among the people that they should fast tomorrow.”
Hadith 2154
حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سُورِينَ ، ثنا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، ثنا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، وَحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجُعْفِيُّ ، عَنْ زَائِدَةَ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْهِلالَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ؟ " ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : " يَا بِلالُ ، نَادِ فِي النَّاسِ أَنْ يَصُومُوا غَدًا " . الْمَعْنَى مُتَقَارِبٌ .
Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A Bedouin came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: I have seen the moon. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Do you bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?" He replied: Yes! The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O Bilal! Announce among the people that they should fast tomorrow." The meaning of this hadith is close to the meaning of the previous narration.
Hadith 2155
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحْرِزٍ ، ثنا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ زَائِدَةَ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، نَحْوَهُ.
This narration is also transmitted with another chain of transmission.
Hadith 2156
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَبُو حَامِدٍ ، ثنا أَبُو عَمَّارٍ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ حُرَيْثٍ ، نا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا جَاءَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْهِلالَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ؟ " ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، فَنَادَى أَنْ صُومُوا .
Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A Bedouin came to the service of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: I have seen the new moon of the first (of the month). The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: "Do you bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah?" He replied: Yes! So the Prophet (peace be upon him) announced that the people should fast.
Hadith 2157
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْبَاقِي بْنُ قَانِعٍ ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْمَعْمَرِيُّ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ الْعَيْشِيُّ ، ثنا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ لَيْلَةَ هِلالِ رَمَضَانَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي قَدْ رَأَيْتُ الْهِلالَ ، فَقَالَ : " تَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ؟ " ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، فَنَادَى فِي النَّاسِ أَنْ صُومُوا . وَرَوَاهُ شُعْبَةُ ، عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ ، مُرْسَلا.
Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: On the night of the new moon of Ramadan, a man came and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have seen the new moon. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Do you bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah?" He replied: Yes! So the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) announced: "You all should begin fasting." This narration has been transmitted by the narrator Shu’bah from Thawri as a mursal narration.
Hadith 2158
حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الدَّقَّاقُ ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سَلامٍ ، ثنا عَمْرِو بْنِ حَكَّامٍ ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا شَهِدَ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ رَأَى الْهِلالَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ؟ " ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، فَأَمَرَ النَّاسَ أَنْ يَصُومُوا .
Ikrimah narrates: A Bedouin testified before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that he had seen the moon, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Do you testify that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah?" He replied: Yes! So the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered the people to observe Eid al-Fitr.
Hadith 2159
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ مِرْدَاسٍ ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ، ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا حَمَّادٌ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، أَنَّهُمْ شَكُّوا فِي هِلالِ رَمَضَانَ مَرَّةً ، فَأَرَادُوا أَنْ لا يَصُومُوا وَلا يَقُومُوا ، فَجَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ مِنَ الْحَرَّةِ فَشَهِدَ أَنَّهُ رَأَى الْهِلالَ ، فَأُتِيَ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ؟ " ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، وَشَهِدَ أَنَّهُ رَأَى الْهِلالَ ، فَأَمَرَ بِلالا ، فَنَادَى فِي النَّاسِ أَنْ يَقُومُوا وَأَنْ يَصُومُوا ، لَمْ يَقُلْ فِيهِ : حَمَّادٌ.
Ikrimah narrates: People were in doubt about the sighting of the Ramadan moon. They intended not to fast the next day and not to perform Tarawih that night. A Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) from the direction of the stony land and testified that he had seen the moon. He was brought to the Prophet (peace be upon him), who asked: "Do you testify that there is no deity except Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?" He replied: Yes! Then he testified that he had seen the moon. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to announce to the people that they should perform Tarawih that night (and fast the next day). Only the narrator named Hammad mentioned the performance of Tarawih.

قُرِئَ عَلَى أَبِي مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ صَاعِدٍ ، وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ : حَدَّثَكُمْ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ زُنْبُورٍ الْمَكِّيُّ ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لا تَقَدَّمُوا هِلالَ رَمَضَانَ بِيَوْمٍ وَلا بِيَوْمَيْنِ ، إِلا أَنْ يُوَافِقَ ذَلِكَ صَوْمًا كَانَ يَصُومُهُ أَحَدُكُمْ ، صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَعُدُّوا ثَلاثِينَ ثُمَّ أَفْطِرُوا " . كُلُّهُمْ ثِقَاتٌ.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not fast before the sighting of the crescent of Ramadan (as a precaution), however (if someone has a habit of fasting and it coincides with that day, then he may fast). Begin fasting upon sighting the crescent and end fasting upon sighting it. If it is cloudy, then complete the count to thirty and then end fasting." All the narrators of this narration are trustworthy.
Hadith 2161
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، وَابْنُ غَيْلانَ قَالا : نا أَبُو هِشَامٍ الرِّفَاعِيُّ ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لا تَعْجَلُوا شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ بِيَوْمٍ وَلا بِيَوْمَيْنِ ، مِثْلَهُ . عُدُّوا ثَلاثِينَ ثُمَّ أَفْطِرُوا " وَهَذَا مِثْلُهُ .
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not begin fasting one or two days before Ramadan (out of precaution); rather, complete the count of thirty and then begin and end fasting."
Hadith 2162
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، ثنا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، نا أَسْبَاطُ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو بِهَذَا ، ثُمَّ أَفْطِرُوا وَهَذَا أَيْضًا .
The same narration is transmitted with another chain (then stop fasting).
Hadith 2163
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، قَالا : نا الرَّبِيعُ ، ثنا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، عَنْ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِثْلَهُ . هَذِهِ أَسَانِيدُ صِحَاحٌ.
The same narration is also transmitted with another chain from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, and all these chains are authentic.
Hadith 2164
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، ثنا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، وَأَبِي سَلَمَةَ أَوْ أَحَدِهِمَا ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْهِلالَ فَصُومُوا ، وَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَأَفْطِرُوا ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَصُومُوا ثَلاثِينَ يَوْمًا " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you see the new moon (of Ramadan), begin fasting, and when you see it (of Shawwal), stop fasting. And if it is cloudy, then complete thirty days of fasting."
Hadith 2165
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْبَزَّازُ ، ثنا عُمَرُ بْنُ شَبَّةَ ، ثنا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ ، أَخْبَرَنِي الْحَجَّاجُ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ حِرَاشٍ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَعُدُّوا شَعْبَانَ ثَلاثِينَ يَوْمًا ثُمَّ صُومُوا ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَعُدُّوا رَمَضَانَ ثَلاثِينَ يَوْمًا ثُمَّ أَفْطِرُوا ، إِلا أَنْ تَرَوْهُ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ " .
Sayyiduna Rubayyi narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Begin fasting (for Ramadan) upon sighting it (the new moon), and end the fast (with Eid al-Fitr) upon sighting it. If it is cloudy, then complete the count of thirty days of Sha’ban, then begin fasting. And if (on the last day of Ramadan) it is cloudy, then complete thirty days of Ramadan, and then end the fast, except in the case that you see the new moon before that (i.e., if you see the new moon after twenty-nine days).” This narration is also transmitted with some other chains.
Hadith 2166
رَوَاهُ جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ رِبْعِيٍّ ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ مُسْنَدًا . وَرَوَاهُ الثَّوْرِيُّ ، وَعُبَيْدَةُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ ، وَغَيْرُهُمَا ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ رِبْعِيٍّ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لا تَقَدَّمُوا الشَّهْرَ حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلالَ أَوْ تُكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ قَبْلَهُ ، ثُمَّ صُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلالَ أَوْ تُكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ ".
Rabi‘ reported it from a Companion: "Do not begin fasting (before the month starts) until you have sighted the crescent of the first (day); before that (do not begin fasting) until you have completed the count of thirty, and (do not stop fasting) until you have completed the count of thirty."
Hadith 2167
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْفَارِسِيُّ مِنْ أَصْلِهِ ، ثنا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، ثنا أَبُو مُسْهِرٍ ، ثنا مَالِكٌ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلالَ ، وَلا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلالَ ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَصُومُوا ثَلاثِينَ " . هُوَ فِي الْمُوَطَّأِ عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، وَابْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ : فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not begin fasting until you see the new moon, and do not end it until you see the new moon. If it is cloudy, then complete thirty days of fasting." This narration is also transmitted in Muwatta from Nafi', from Ibn Dinar, from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), in which these words are mentioned: "Complete its count."
Hadith 2168
حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ، وَجَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُرْشِدٍ ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَرَفَةَ ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّمَا الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ ، فَلا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ ، وَلا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ " . زَادَ ابْنُ مُرْشِدٍ : وَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ إِذَا مَضَى شَعْبَانُ تِسْعًا وَعِشْرِينَ يَبْعَثُ مِنْ يَنْظُرُ ، فَإِنْ رَأَى فَذَاكَ ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَرَ وَلَمْ يَحُلْ دُونَ مَنْظَرِهِ سَحَابٌ ، وَلا قَتَرٌ أَصْبَحَ مُفْطِرًا ، وَإِنْ حَالَ دُونَ مَنْظَرِهِ سَحَابٌ أَوْ قَتَرٌ أَصْبَحَ صَائِمًا ، قَالَ : وَكَانَ لا يُفْطِرُ إِلا مَعَ النَّاسِ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “(The month) is sometimes twenty-nine days. Do not begin fasting until you see it (the crescent of Ramadan), and do not stop fasting until you see it (the crescent of Shawwal). If it is cloudy, then complete the count.” (The narrator named Ibn Murshid has transmitted this additional statement: Nafi’ narrates) When twenty-nine days of Sha’ban had passed, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would tell someone to look for the crescent. If it was sighted, that was fine; if it was not sighted, and there was no cloud or dust obstructing the sighting, then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would not fast the next day. But if it was not sighted and there was dust or cloud obstructing the sighting, then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would fast the next day. The narrator states: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would end fasting along with the people.
Hadith 2169
حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَرَفَةَ ، ثنا عَبِيدَةُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ التَّيْمِيُّ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ حِرَاشٍ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَلا لا تَقَدَّمُوا الشَّهْرَ حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلالَ أَوْ تُكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ ، وَلا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلالَ أَوْ تُكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ " . كُلُّهُمْ ثِقَاتٌ.
Rabi' bin Hirash narrates from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Beware! Do not fast (as a precaution) before the (month of Ramadan) until you see the crescent, or complete the count of thirty days. And do not stop fasting until you see the crescent (or complete the count)." All the narrators of this narration are trustworthy.
Hadith 2170
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُبَشِّرٍ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ الأَزْرَقُ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ حِرَاشٍ ، عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لا تَقَدَّمُوا الشَّهْرَ ، لا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلالَ أَوْ تُكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ ثَلاثِينَ ، ثُمَّ تَصُومُوا وَلا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلالَ أَوْ تُتِمُّوا أَوْ تُكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ ثَلاثِينَ " . وَهَذَا مِثْلُهُ .
Rabi' bin Hirash narrates from a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Do not fast (as a precaution) before the (month of Ramadan); do not begin fasting until you see the crescent or complete the count of thirty days. Then begin fasting, and do not stop fasting until you see (the crescent of Shawwal) or complete the count of thirty days."
Hadith 2171
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ الْبَغَوِيُّ ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَرَفَةَ ، ثنا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ بِإِسْنَادِهِ نَحْوَهُ ، وَهَذَا مِثْلُهُ.
This narration is also transmitted with another chain, which is similar to it.
Hadith 2172
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ، ثنا آدَمُ بْنُ أَبِي إِيَاسَ ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ مُرَّةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْبَخْتَرِيِّ الطَّائِيَّ ، يَقُولُ : أَهْلَلْنَا هِلالَ رَمَضَانَ وَنَحْنُ بِذَاتِ الشُّقُوقِ ، فَشَكَكْنَا فِي الْهِلالِ ، فَبَعَثْنَا رَجُلا إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَسَأَلَهُ ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَمَدَّهُ لِرُؤْيَتِهِ ، وَإِنْ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا عِدَّةَ شَعْبَانَ ثَلاثِينَ " . صَحِيحٌ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ . وَرَوَاهُ حُصَيْنٌ ، وَأَبُو خَالِدٍ الدَّالانِيُّ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، وَلَمْ يَقُلْ فِيهِ : عِدَّةَ شَعْبَانَ غَيْرُ آدَمَ وَهُوَ ثِقَةٌ.
Abu Bakhtari narrates: We saw the moon of Eid at the place of Dhat Shaquq, and we were in doubt about it—whether it was the moon of the first, second, or third night. So we sent a person to Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them). Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "Allah the Exalted has connected this command with the sighting of the moon. If clouds cover you, then complete the count of thirty days of Sha'ban." This narration is authentic as transmitted from Shu'bah; other narrators have transmitted it from Amr ibn Murrah. Only the narrator named Adam has mentioned the words "the count of Sha'ban" in this hadith, and this narrator is trustworthy.
Hadith 2173
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ، ثنا آدَمُ ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَوْ قَالَ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمُ الشَّهْرُ فَعُدُّوا ثَلاثِينَ " ، يَعْنِي عُدُّوا شَعْبَانَ ثَلاثِينَ . صَحِيحٌ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، كَذَا رَوَاهُ آدَمُ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ . وَأَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ ، عَنْ آدَمَ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، وَقَالَ فِيهِ : فَعُدُّوا شَعْبَانَ ثَلاثِينَ ، وَلَمْ يَقُلْ : يَعْنِي.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words): Sayyiduna Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Begin fasting upon sighting it (the new moon of the first) and end fasting upon sighting it, and if it is cloudy, then complete the count to thirty." Imam Daraqutni states: That is, complete the count of thirty days of Sha'ban. This narration, as transmitted from Shu'bah, is authentic; Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) has transmitted this narration from Shu'bah through Adam, and in it are these words: "You should complete the count of thirty days of the month of Sha'ban." In this narration, the word "that is" has not been transmitted.
Hadith 2174
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، ثنا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، ثنا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَحْصُوا هِلالَ شَعْبَانَ لِرَمَضَانَ ، وَلا تَخْلِطُوا بِرَمَضَانَ إِلا أَنْ يُوَافِقَ ذَلِكَ صِيَامًا كَانَ يَصُومُهُ أَحَدُكُمْ ، وَصُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَإِنَّهَا لَيْسَتْ تُغْمَى عَلَيْكُمُ الْعِدَّةُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep count of the crescent of Sha'ban for Ramadan, and do not join Sha'ban with Ramadan (by fasting continuously), except for a person who has a habitual fast on that day (then his ruling is different). Begin fasting by sighting the crescent (of Ramadan) and stop fasting by sighting it (of Shawwal), and if it is cloudy, then completing the count will not be difficult for you."
Hadith 2175
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، ثنا لُوَيْنٌ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَابِرٍ ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ طَلْقٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " جَعَلَ اللَّهُ الأَهِلَّةَ مَوَاقِيتَ لِلنَّاسِ ، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَصُومُوا ، وَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَأَفْطِرُوا ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَتِمُّوا الْعِدَّةَ ثَلاثِينَ " . قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَابِرٍ : سَمِعْتُ هَذَا مِنْهُ وَحَدِيثَيْنِ آخَرَيْنِ ، مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَابِرٍ لَيْسَ بِالْقَوِيِّ ضَعِيفٌ.
Sayyiduna Qais bin Talq narrates from his father: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty has made the new moon for people to calculate the days. When you see it, start fasting, and when you see it, stop fasting. And if clouds cover you, then complete the count to thirty." The narrator Muhammad bin Jabir states: I have heard this narration from him, and in addition, I have heard two more narrations. The narrator named Muhammad bin Jabir is not reliable; he is weak.
Hadith 2176
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْبَخْتَرِيِّ ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْخَلِيلِ ، ثنا الْوَاقِدِيُّ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ حَنْظَلَةَ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الأَسْلَمِيِّ ، عَنْ رَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَحْصُوا عِدَّةَ شَعْبَانَ لِرَمَضَانَ وَلا تَقَدَّمُوا الشَّهْرَ بِصَوْمٍ ، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَصُومُوا وَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَأَفْطِرُوا ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ ثَلاثِينَ يَوْمًا ثُمَّ أَفْطِرُوا ، فَإِنَّ الشَّهْرَ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا " ، وَخَنَسَ إِبْهَامَهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ .
Sayyiduna Rafi‘ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Count the days of Sha‘ban for Ramadan, do not fast before the month of Ramadan begins. When you see it (the crescent of the first), then start fasting, and when you see it, then stop fasting. If it is cloudy for you, then complete thirty days, and then stop fasting, because sometimes the month is like this, and sometimes like that.” The third time, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) bent his thumb inward.
Hadith 2177
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْبَزَّازُ ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَرَفَةَ ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، وَثنا أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ الْبُسْرِيُّ ، نا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ ، نا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّمَا الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ ، فَلا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ ، وَلا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَتِمُّوا الْعِدَّةَ ثَلاثِينَ ، فِطْرُكُمْ يَوْمَ تُفْطِرُونَ ، وَأُضْحِيَتُكُمْ يَوْمَ تُضَحُّونَ ، وَكُلُّ عَرَفَةَ مَوْقِفٌ ، وَكُلُّ مِنًى مَنْحَرٌ ، وَكُلُّ فِجَاجِ مَكَّةَ مَنْحَرٌ " . رَوَاهُ حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ وَرَفَعَهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: "Sometimes the month is of twenty-nine days, so do not begin fasting until you see the crescent, and do not stop fasting until you see it, and if it is cloudy, then complete the count to thirty. Your Eid al-Fitr will be on the day when all the people perform Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha will be on the day when all the people perform Eid al-Adha. The whole of Arafah is a place for standing (Wuquf), the whole of Mina is a place for sacrifice, and every street of Makkah is a place for sacrifice." Hammad bin Zaid narrated this report from Ayyub and transmitted it as a marfu' narration up to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Hadith 2178
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ مِرْدَاسٍ ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، نا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ : ذَكَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوَهُ . وَتَابَعَهُ رَوْحُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ .
The same narration is transmitted with another chain, however, in it there is mention of it being narrated from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), while there is also corroboration of this narration.
Hadith 2179
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، ثنا أَزْهَرُ بْنُ جَمِيلٍ ، ثنا ابْنُ سَوَاءٍ ، ثنا رَوْحُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ " ، ثُمَّ ذَكَرِ مِثْلَهُ إِلَى آخِرِهِ ، وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ : الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ . رَوْحُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ مِنَ الثِّقَاتِ.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Begin fasting upon sighting the moon." Then he narrated the hadith as previously, but in this narration, there is no mention of: "Sometimes the month is twenty-nine days." The narrator of this narration, Ruh bin Qasim, is trustworthy.
Hadith 2180
ثنا أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الصَّنْعَانِيُّ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، ثنا دَاوُدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، وَثَابِتُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، جَمِيعًا عَنِ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " صَوْمُكُمْ يَوْمَ تَصُومُونَ ، وَفِطْرُكُمْ يَوْمَ تُفْطِرُونَ " .
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your fasting will be on the day when all the people fast, and your Eid will be on the day when all the people celebrate Eid."
Hadith 2181
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْبَخْتَرِيِّ ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْخَلِيلِ ، ثنا الْوَاقِدِيُّ ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الزُّهْرِيُّ ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنِ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " الصَّوْمُ يَوْمَ تَصُومُونَ ، وَالْفِطْرُ يَوْمَ تُفْطِرُونَ ، وَالأَضْحَى يَوْمَ تُضَحُّونَ " . الْوَاقِدِيُّ ضَعِيفٌ.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The fast will be on the day when all of you fast, and Eid al-Fitr will be on the day when all of you celebrate Eid al-Fitr, and the major Eid will be on the day when all of you perform Eid al-Adha." The narrator of this narration, Waqidi, is weak.
