بَابٌ: لَا تَحِلُّ الصَّدَقَةُ لِغَنِيٍّ وَلَا لِذِي مِرَّةٍ سَوِيٍّ
Chapter: Charity is not permissible for the rich or the strong and able
Hadith 1988
حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ الصُّوفِيُّ الشَّيْخُ الصَّالِحُ يُعْرَفُ بِوَلِيدِ مِصْرَ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ النَّسَائِيُّ ، ثنا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي الرِّجَالِ ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ غَزِيَّةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : سَرَّحَتْنِي أُمِّي إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقَعَدْتُ ، فَاسْتَقْبَلَنِي وَقَالَ : " مَنِ اسْتَغْنَى أَغْنَاهُ اللَّهُ ، وَمَنِ اسْتَعَفَّ أَعَفَّهُ اللَّهُ ، وَمَنِ اسْتَكْفَ كَفَاهُ اللَّهُ ، وَمَنْ سَأَلَ وَلَهُ قِيمَةُ أُوقِيَّةٍ فَقَدْ أَلْحَفَ " . فَقُلْتُ : نَاقَتِي الْيَاقُوتَةُ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أُوقِيَّةٍ ، فَرَجَعْتُ وَلَمْ أَسْأَلْهُ.
Abdur Rahman bin Abu Sa’id narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him): My mother sent me to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). I presented myself before him and sat down. He turned towards me and said: “Whoever wants to be self-sufficient, Allah makes him self-sufficient; whoever wants to remain chaste, Allah grants him chastity; whoever wants contentment, Allah grants him contentment. Whoever asks something from another while he possesses the value of one uqiyah (of silver), then he has sought excess.” (Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates): I thought that my she-camel, Yaqutah, is worth more than one uqiyah, so I returned and did not ask you (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) for anything.
Hadith 1989
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو شَيْبَةَ عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمُخَرِّمِيُّ ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، ثنا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لا تَحِلُّ الصَّدَقَةُ لِغَنِيٍّ ، وَلا لِذِي مِرَّةٍ سَوِيٍّ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not permissible for a wealthy and well-off person to take zakat."
Hadith 1990
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا أَبُو هِشَامٍ الرِّفَاعِيُّ ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَيَّاشٍ ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُجَشِّرٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْبَزَّازُ ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَرَفَةَ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ عُثْمَانَ الْمُعَدَّلُ بِوَاسِطَ ، ثنا عَمَّارُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ التَّمَّارُ ، قَالُوا : ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي حُصَيْنٍ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لا تَحِلُّ الصَّدَقَةُ لِغَنِيٍّ ، وَلا لِذِي مِرَّةٍ سَوِيٍّ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not permissible for a wealthy and well-off person to take zakat."
Hadith 1991
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَيَّاشٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ، ثنا قَيْسٌ ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي حُصَيْنٍ ، بِهَذَا مِثْلَهُ . حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عَيَّاشٍ ، نا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ.
This narration is also transmitted with another chain of transmission.
Hadith 1992
، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ رَيْحَانَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِثْلَهُ ، إِلا أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " لِذِي مِرَّةٍ قَوِيٍّ ".
This narration is also transmitted with another chain, however, there is a difference of one word in it.
Hadith 1993
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْبَزَّازُ ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَرَفَةَ ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنِ الْوَازِعِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَدَقَةٌ ، فَرَكِبَهُ النَّاسُ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّهَا لا تَصْلُحُ لِغَنِيٍّ ، وَلا لِصَحِيحٍ سَوِيٍّ ، وَلا لِعَامِلٍ قَوِيٍّ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The wealth of zakat was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and people came to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not permissible for a wealthy person, a person of means, or a person who is able to work to take this."
Hadith 1994
حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْقَطَّانُ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ كَرَامَةَ ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَدِيِّ بْنِ الْخِيَارِ ، أَخْبَرَنِي رَجُلانِ أَنَّهُمَا أَتَيَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ يَسْأَلانِهِ مِمَّا بِيَدَيْهِ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ ، فَرَفَعَ فِيهِمَا الْبَصَرَ وَخَفَضَهُ فَرَآهُمَا جَلِدَيْنِ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنْ شِئْتُمَا أَعْطَيْتُكُمَا مِنْهَا ، وَلا حَظَّ فِيهَا لِغَنِيٍّ وَلا لِقَوِيٍّ مُكْتَسِبٍ " .
Ubaidullah bin Adi narrates: Two men informed me of this; both were present with the Prophet (ﷺ) during the Farewell Pilgrimage. They asked the Prophet (ﷺ) for some of the zakat wealth that was with him. The Prophet (ﷺ) looked up and examined both of them. He observed that both were strong and able-bodied. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "If you wish, I will give you some of it, but it is not permissible to give it to a wealthy person or to one who is capable of earning."
