Hadith 1840
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدِ بْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ أَبُو هِشَامٍ ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْقَاضِي الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا أَبُو هِشَامٍ الرِّفَاعِيُّ ، قَالا : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ ، ثنا الشَّيْبَانِيُّ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، " أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّ بِقَبْرٍ دُفِنَ حَدِيثًا ، فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَكَبَّرَ أَرْبَعًا " . قُلْتُ : مَنْ حَدَّثَكَ ؟ قَالَ : " الثِّقَةُ " ، مَنْ شَهِدَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ .
Imam Sha’bi narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a grave, the owner of which had been buried a short while ago. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer for him, and in the funeral prayer he said takbeer four times. The narrator states: I asked Imam Sha’bi, “Who narrated this hadith to you?” He replied: “A trustworthy person narrated it to me, who was present at that occasion; he is Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).”

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، وَإِسْمَاعِيلُ الْوَرَّاقُ ، قَالا : ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ الأَزْرَقُ ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَوَانَةَ ، عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، " أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى عَلَى قَبْرٍ مَنْبُوذٍ ، فَكَبَّرَ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعًا " . وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، وَأَبُو حُذَيْفَةَ ، عَنْ زَائِدَةَ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ . وتَابَعَهُمْ مَنْصُورُ بْنُ أَبِي الأَسْوَدِ ، وَعَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ ، عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ ، كُلُّهُمْ قَالَ : كَبَّرَ أَرْبَعًا.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a grave that was isolated, and he (peace be upon him) said the takbir four times (while performing the funeral prayer for it). This narration is also transmitted with some other chains, and all of these narrators have reported the same thing: that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir four times.
Hadith 1842
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ الْبُهْلُولِ ، ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْعَنْقَرِيُّ ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَنْبَسِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، " أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى عَلَى جِنَازَةٍ فَكَبَّرَ عَلَيْهَا أَرْبَعًا ، وَسَلَّمَ تَسْلِيمَةً وَاحِدَةً " .
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer for a man, in which he said takbeer four times and said salam once.
Hadith 1843
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، وَزَيْدُ بْنُ أَخْزَمَ ، قَالا : نا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ، ثنا أَبُو عَامِرٍ الْخَزَّازُ صَالِحُ بْنُ رُسْتُمَ ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا كَانَ يُنَظِّفُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَمَاتَ فَدُفِنَ لَيْلا ، فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَخْبَرَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " انْطَلِقُوا إِلَى قَبْرِهِ " ، فَانْطَلَقَ وَانْطَلَقُوا إِلَى قَبْرِهِ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْقُبُورَ مُمْتَلِئَةٌ عَلَى أَهْلِهَا ظُلْمَةً ، وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يُنَوِّرُهَا بِصَلاتِي عَلَيْهَا " ، فَأَتَى الْقَبْرَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ . وَهَذَا لَفْظُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ.
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man used to clean the (Prophet’s) Mosque. He passed away and was buried at night. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed about this, he said: “Take me to his grave!” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and others with him went to that man’s grave. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “These graves are full of darkness for their inhabitants (i.e., the dead), and Allah, because of my prayer over them, illuminates their graves for them.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to that man’s grave and performed his funeral prayer. These are the words of the narration from the narrator named Ali bin Muslim.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَى الْفَقِيهُ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ فِي كِتَابِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ هَانِئٍ ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، قَالا : نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ الشَّهِيدِ ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، " أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى عَلَى قَبْرٍ بَعْدَمَا دُفِنَ " . هَذَا لَفْظُ ابْنِ هَانِئٍ ، وَقَالَ زُهَيْرٌ : " صَلَّى عَلَى قَبْرِ امْرَأَةٍ بَعْدَمَا دُفِنَتْ ".
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the grave of a man after he had been buried. In another narration, these words are mentioned: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the funeral prayer at the grave of a woman, after she had been buried (he performed her funeral prayer).

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُبَشِّرٍ ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدِ بْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، ثنا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الصَّفَّارُ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْمَحَامِلِيُّ ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الْجَوَابِيُّ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْحَسَّانِيُّ ، وَالْعَلاءُ بْنُ سَالِمٍ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ الدَّقِيقِيُّ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، ثنا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : أَبْصَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَبْرًا حَدِيثًا ، فَقَالَ : " أَلا آذَنْتُمُونِي بِهَذَا ؟ " ، قَالُوا : كُنْتَ نَائِمًا فَكَرِهْنَا أَنْ نُوقِظَكَ ، فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ فَقُمْتُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَجَعَلَنِي عَنْ يَمِينِهِ . وَقَدْ زَادَ بَعْضُهُمُ الْكَلِمَةَ وَالشَّيْءَ ، وَالْمَعْنَى وَاحِدٌ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a newly constructed grave, so he asked: “Why was I not informed about this?” The people replied: “You (peace be upon him) were sleeping at that time, and we did not like to wake you.” (The narrator states) Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer there. I stood to his left side, so he (peace be upon him) moved me to his right side. Some narrators have reported some additional words and meanings in this, however, the meaning is the same.
Hadith 1846
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، وَالْقَاضِي الْحُسَيْنُ الْمَحَامِلِيُّ ، قَالا : نا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ يُونُسَ الزَّيَّاتُ ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ، ثنا هُرَيْمُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، " أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى عَلَى مَيِّتٍ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهِ بِثَلاثٍ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer for a man three days after his death.
Hadith 1847
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، نا بِشْرُ بْنُ آدَمَ ، ثنا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، " أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى عَلَى قَبْرٍ بَعْدَ شَهْرٍ " . تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ بِشْرُ بْنُ آدَمَ ، وَخَالَفَهُ غَيْرُهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَاصِمٍ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer at the grave of a person one month after he had been buried. Among the narrators, Bishr bin Adam is unique in narrating this from Abu Asim.
Hadith 1848
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، ثنا بُنْدَارٌ ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ يُجَاءُ بِقَتْلَى أُحُدٍ تِسْعَةٌ وَحَمْزَةُ عَاشِرُهُمْ فَيُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِمُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، ثُمَّ يُدْفَنُونَ تِسْعَةً وَيَدَعُونَ حَمْزَةَ ، وَيُجَاءُ بِتِسْعَةٍ وَحَمْزَةُ عَاشِرُهُمْ ، فَيُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِمْ فَيَرْفَعُونَ التِّسْعَةَ وَيَدَعُونَ حَمْزَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Nine individuals who participated in the Battle of Uhud were brought, and with them was the tenth, Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the funeral prayer for all of them, then the nine were buried and Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) was not buried. Then nine more individuals were brought, and with them the tenth was Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the funeral prayer for all of them as well, then the nine were buried and Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) was not buried (i.e., the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the funeral prayer for Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) repeatedly).
Hadith 1849
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ قَطَنٍ ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ، ثنا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ عَدِيٍّ ، ثنا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ، عَنْ حَيْوَةَ ، وَابْنِ لَهِيعَةَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَيْرِ ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ ، قَالَ : " صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى قَتْلَى أُحُدٍ بَعْدَ ثَمَانِ سِنِينَ " .
Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the funeral prayer for those martyred in the Battle of Uhud eight years later.
Hadith 1850
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْبَزَّازُ ، نا بِشْرٌ ، وَمَطَرٌ ، قَالا : نا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا جَاءَ نَعْيُ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اصْنَعُوا لآلِ جَعْفَرٍ طَعَامًا فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ أَتَاهُمْ مَا يَشْغَلُهُمْ ، أَوْ أَمْرٌ يَشْغَلُهُمْ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the news of the death of Sayyiduna Ja'far Tayyar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Prepare food for the family of Ja'far, for a situation has befallen them which has preoccupied them." (The narrator is unsure about one word here.)
Hadith 1851
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْبَاقِي بْنُ قَانِعٍ ، نا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ، نا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَنْدَلٍ ، نا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ الْمَدَنِيُّ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُوسَى ، عَنْ عَوْنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ أُمِّهِ ، عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ " أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ أَوْصَتْ أَنْ يُغَسِّلَهَا زَوْجُهَا عَلِيٌّ وَأَسْمَاءُ ، فَغَسَّلاهَا " .
Sayyida Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) had made a bequest that she should be given the ritual bath (ghusl) by her husband, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and Asma (bint Umais), so both of them gave her the ritual bath.
Hadith 1852
حَدَّثَنَا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، نا خَلادُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ ، نا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ عَوْنٍ ، نا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ " أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ صَلَّى عَلَى سَبْعِ جَنَائِزَ رِجَالٍ وَنِسَاءٍ ، فَجَعَلَ الرِّجَالَ مِمَّا يَلِيهِ وَالنِّسَاءَ مِمَّا يَلِي الْقِبْلَةَ ، وَصَفَّهُمْ صَفًّا وَاحِدًا ، وَقَالَ : وَوَضَعَ جِنَازَةَ أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتِ عَلِيٍّ امْرَأَةِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ، وَابْنٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ : زَيْدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، وَالإِمَامُ يَوْمَئِذٍ سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْعَاصِ ، وَفِي النَّاسِ يَوْمَئِذٍ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ، وَأَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدٍ ، وَأَبُو قَتَادَةَ ، فَقُلْتُ : مَا هَذَا ؟ قَالُوا : السُّنَّةُ " .
Nafi' reports: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) led the funeral prayer for seven people together, among whom were both men and women. He placed the men in front of him and the women towards the direction of the Qiblah, and he made a single row for all of them. The narrator states: The body of Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab’s wife and Sayyiduna Ali’s daughter, Sayyida Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), and her son were placed. The name of her son was Zaid bin Umar. In those days, Sayyiduna Sa'id bin al-As was the governor, and among those present were Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, Abu Hurairah, Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri, and Sayyiduna Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with them). I inquired: What is this method? They replied: “This is the Sunnah.”
