Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered a funeral prayer, in which he pronounced four takbirs and gave one salam.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said four takbirs in the last funeral prayer. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said four takbirs in the funeral prayer of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said four takbirs in the funeral prayer of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said four takbirs in the funeral prayer of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said four takbirs in the funeral prayer of Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him). And the angels said four takbirs in the funeral prayer of Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him). The narrator of this narration, Furat bin Sa’ib, is abandoned in hadith.

Talhah bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) led a funeral prayer, and he recited Surah Al-Fatihah in it. I asked him about this, and he said: This is Sunnah. (The narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words:) The complete Sunnah is this.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: We used to give ghusl (ritual washing) to the deceased, so some of us would perform ghusl afterwards and some would not (i.e., performing ghusl after washing the deceased is not obligatory).

Ayyub bin Nu'man reports: I performed a funeral prayer behind Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said five takbirs in it. The narrator has transmitted this narration as a marfu' hadith.

Ayyub bin Sa'id reports: I performed the funeral prayer behind Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said five takbirs. Then he stated that: "I performed a funeral prayer behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he also said five takbirs, so we will not abandon them because of anyone."

It is narrated about Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): He said six takbirs over the people of Badr, five takbirs over the companions of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and four takbirs over all other people.

The narrator named Marqa’ states: I performed a funeral prayer behind Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said takbeer five times in it. He explained: “I performed a funeral prayer behind the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and he also said takbeer five times, so after him, I will not abandon this practice for the sake of anyone.”

The servant of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), Isa, narrates: I performed a funeral prayer behind my master (Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman, may Allah be pleased with him), who is a righteous man, and he said the takbir five times. Then he stated: "I was not mistaken, rather I pronounced the takbir just as my beloved friend, Sayyiduna Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him, i.e., the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him), pronounced the takbir."

Ubaid bin Sabaaq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: Once, Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with him) led us in the funeral prayer. When he said the first takbeer, after that he recited Surah Al-Fatihah, to the extent that his voice reached the people behind him. The narrator states: Then he continued saying the takbeer, until only one takbeer remained, at which point he recited the words of tashahhud of the prayer. Then he said the takbeer and concluded the prayer.

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Once the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) returned from participating in a funeral at Baqi’ (graveyard), and I was feeling severe pain in my head. I was saying: “Oh, my head!” (The idiomatic translation would be: Alas! I am dying). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Rather, oh, my head!” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “If you were to pass away before me, there would be no harm to you, for I would shroud you, perform your funeral prayer, and bury you.” Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “By Allah! When you do that, you will return to my house and spend the night here with your new wife.” So the Prophet (peace be upon him) smiled. After that, the illness of the Prophet (peace be upon him) began, in which he passed away.
