Hadith 1797
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ الْحَافِظُ ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ الزُّهْرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ الْعُمَرِيُّ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَوْنٍ مَوْلَى أُمِّ يَحْيَى بِنْتِ الْحَكَمِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ شِهَابٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " خَرَجَ نَبِيٌّ مِنَ الأَنْبِيَاءِ بِالنَّاسِ يَسْتَسْقِي فَإِذَا هُوَ بِنَمْلَةٍ رَافِعَةٍ بَعْضَ قَوَائِمِهَا إِلَى السَّمَاءِ ، فَقَالَ : ارْجِعُوا فَقَدِ اسْتُجِيبَ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَجْلِ شَأْنِ هَذِهِ النَّمْلَةِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Once, a prophet went out with the people to perform the prayer for rain (Salat al-Istisqa). There was also an ant there, which had raised its feet (i.e., hands) towards the sky. So that prophet said: 'Return, for because of this ant your prayer has been accepted.'"
Hadith 1798
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي الثَّلْجِ ، ثنا جَدِّي ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ الطَّبَّاعُ ، عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ غِيَاثٍ ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : " اسْتَسْقَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَحَوَّلَ رِدَاءَهُ لِيَتَحَوَّلَ الْقَحْطُ " .
Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his father (Imam Muhammad al-Baqir, may Allah be pleased with him): The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his cloak inside out while supplicating for rain so that the drought would come to an end.
Hadith 1799
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ نَيْرُوزٍ ، ثنا زِيَادُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، نا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ ، سَمِعَ عَبَّادَ بْنَ تَمِيمٍ ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَمِّهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ إِلَى الْمُصَلَّى يَسْتَسْقِي فَاسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ فَقَلَبَ رِدَاءَهُ وَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ " ، قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : جَعَلَ الْيَمِينَ عَلَى الشِّمَالِ وَالشِّمَالَ عَلَى الْيَمِينِ.
‘Ubad bin Tamim narrates from his uncle: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) went out to the Eid ground to perform the prayer for rain (Salat al-Istisqa). While supplicating, he (peace be upon him) faced the Qiblah, turned his cloak inside out, and performed two rak‘ahs (units) of the prayer for rain. Sufyan, the narrator, says: While turning his cloak inside out, the Prophet (peace be upon him) placed its right side to the left and its left side to the right.
Hadith 1800
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جَرِيرٍ ، ثنا سَهْلُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ ، قَالَ : أَرْسَلَنِي مَرْوَانُ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ سُنَّةِ الاسْتِسْقَاءِ ، فَقَالَ : " سُنَّةُ الاسْتِسْقَاءِ سُنَّةُ الصَّلاةِ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ ، إِلا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَلَبَ رِدَاءَهُ فَجَعَلَ يَمِينَهُ عَلَى يَسَارِهِ وَيَسَارَهُ عَلَى يَمِينِهِ ، وَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَكَبَّرَ فِي الأُولَى سَبْعَ تَكْبِيرَاتٍ ، وَقَرَأَ : سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الأَعْلَى ، وَقَرَأَ فِي الثَّانِيَةِ : هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ ، وَكَبَّرَ فِيهَا خَمْسَ تَكْبِيرَاتٍ " .
Talhah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: Marwan sent me to Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) so that I could ask him about the Sunnah method of the prayer for rain (Salat al-Istisqa). Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Sunnah for Istisqa (i.e., supplicating for rain) is that the prayer for rain should be performed in the Eid ground. However, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had turned his cloak inside out. He (peace be upon him) placed its right side on the left and its left side on the right. He (peace be upon him) performed two rak‘ahs of prayer. In the first rak‘ah, he (peace be upon him) said the takbir seven times and recited Surah al-A‘la, while in the second rak‘ah he recited Surah al-Ghashiyah. In the second rak‘ah, he (peace be upon him) said the takbir five times.
Hadith 1801
ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَبِي الرَّبِيعِ ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أنا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ تَمِيمٍ ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ ، قَالَ : " خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْتَسْقِي بِالنَّاسِ ، فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَجَهَرَ بِالْقِرَاءَةِ ، وَحَوَّلَ رِدَاءَهُ وَرَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ يَدْعُو ، فَدَعَا وَاسْتَسْقَى وَاسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ " .
Ubad bin Tamim narrates from his uncle: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) went out with the people to pray for rain. There, he led the people in two rak'ahs in which he recited aloud. The Prophet (peace be upon him) turned his cloak inside out and raised both his hands in supplication. He prayed for the descent of rain, and his face was towards the Qiblah.
Hadith 1802
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا إبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ هَانِئٍ ، ثنا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ ، أَخْبَرَنِي شُعَيْبٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ تَمِيمٍ ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ ، وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَخْبَرَهُ " أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ بِالنَّاسِ إِلَى الْمُصَلَّى يَسْتَسْقِي بِهِمْ ، فَدَعَا اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَائِمًا ، ثُمَّ تَوَجَّهَ قِبَلَ الْقِبْلَةِ وَحَوَّلَ رِدَاءَهُ فَسُقُوا " .
Ubad bin Tamim narrates from his uncle: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) went out with the people to pray for rain. He proceeded to the Eid ground, where he supplicated for rain. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood and prayed to Allah, faced the Qiblah, and turned his cloak inside out, and then the people were given water (i.e., rain was sent down).
Hadith 1803
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَجْهَرُ بِالْقِرَاءَةِ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ وَفِي الاسْتِسْقَاءِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite aloud in the prayers of the two Eids and Istisqa (prayer for rain).
Hadith 1804
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، ثنا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الأَنْصَارِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ تَمِيمٍ ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : " خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْتَسْقِي ، فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ ، فَلَمَّا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَدْعُوَ أَقْبَلَ بِوَجْهِهِ إِلَى الْقِبْلَةِ وَحَوَّلَ رِدَاءَهُ " .
Ubadah bin Tamim narrates from his uncle, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to pray for rain. He delivered a sermon to the people, and when he began to supplicate, he turned his face towards the Qiblah and turned his cloak inside out.
Hadith 1805
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ تَمِيمٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، نَحْوَهُ.
The same narration, along with some other chains of transmission, is reported from Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in similar wording.
Hadith 1806
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْقَاضِي الأَنْطَاكِيُّ ، ثنا أَبُو الْحَارِثِ اللَّيْثُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ هِشَامِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ مِنْ بَنِي عَامِرِ بْنِ لُؤَيٍّ ، أنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَدَّهُ هِشَامَ بْنَ إِسْحَاقَ ، يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، أَنَّ الْوَلِيدَ بْنَ عُتْبَةَ أَمِيرَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَرْسَلَهُ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ هِشَامِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبِي ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، أَنَّ الْوَلِيدَ أَرْسَلَهُ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، فَقَالَ : يَا ابْنَ أَخِي ، سَلْهُ كَيْفَ صَنَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الاسْتِسْقَاءِ يَوْمَ اسْتَسْقَى بِالنَّاسِ ؟ فَقَالَ : " نَعَمْ ، خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُتَخَشِّعًا مُتَذَلِّلا ، فَصَنَعَ فِيهِ كَمَا يَصْنَعُ فِي الْفِطْرِ وَالأَضْحَى " . وَقَالَ الْقَاضِي فِي حَدِيثِهِ : مُتَبَذِّلا ، وَلَمْ يَقُلْ : مُتَذَلِّلا.
Ishaq bin Abdullah reports: The governor of Madinah, Walid bin Utbah, sent him to Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them). He said: "O my nephew! Ask them what the Prophet (peace be upon him) did regarding the prayer for rain." When he prayed for rain for the people, Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: "Yes! The Prophet (peace be upon him) went out in a state of humility and submissiveness, and he did there just as he would do in the Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha prayers." Here, the narrator differed in transmitting one word.
Hadith 1807
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ بُهْلُولٍ ، ثنا هَارُونُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، وَيُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، وَالْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الأَسْوَدِ ، قَالُوا : ثنا وَكِيعٌ ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ كِنَانَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : أَرْسَلَنِي أَمِيرٌ مِنَ الأُمَرَاءِ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الاسْتِسْقَاءِ ، وَقَالَ هَارُونُ، وَيُوسُفُ عَنِ الصَّلاةِ فِي الاسْتِسْقَاءِ ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : " مَا مَنَعَهُ أَنْ يَسْأَلَنِي خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُتَوَاضِعًا مُتَبَذِّلا مُتَضَرِّعًا مُتَرَسِّلا فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ كَمَا يُصَلِّي فِي الْعِيدِ ، وَلَمْ يَخْطُبْ خُطْبَتَكُمْ هَذِهِ " .
Hisham bin Ishaq narrates from his father: An amir sent me to Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) so that I could ask him about the prayer of Istisqa (prayer for rain). Harun and Yusuf, the narrators, have reported these words: so that I could ask him about the prayer offered for supplicating for rain. Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Why did he not ask me himself?" (Then he explained) The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) went out (to the prayer ground) in a state of humility and submissiveness, weeping and imploring, and he performed two rak'ahs in the same manner as he would perform the Eid prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not deliver a sermon as you people do.
Hadith 1808
ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، ثنا صَالِحُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ ، وَالْقَوَارِيرِيُّ ، قَالا : نا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ ، ثنا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، ثنا خَالِدُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ ، ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ ، ثنا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، ثنا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، قَالُوا : ثنا سَعِيدٌ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، حَدَّثَهُمْ أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " كَانَ لا يَرْفَعُ يَدَيْهِ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ إِلا الاسْتِسْقَاءَ ، فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يَرْفَعُ يَدَيْهِ حَتَّى يُرَى بَيَاضُ إِبْطَيْهِ " . هَذَا حَدِيثُ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ مَنِيعٍ فِي حَدِيثِهِ . حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " لَمْ يَكُنْ يَرْفَعْ يَدَيْهِ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ إِلا فِي الاسْتِسْقَاءِ ، فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يَرْفَعُ يَدَيْهِ حَتَّى يُرَى بَيَاضُ إِبْطَيْهِ ".
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands only while supplicating for rain, and during the supplication he raised his hands so much that the whiteness of his armpits became visible. With another chain of narration, these words are transmitted: Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never raised his hands while supplicating, except when supplicating for rain, and he raised his hands so much that the whiteness of his armpits became visible.
