What is recited in the rak'ahs of Witr and the Qunoot in it
Hadith 1659
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الأَشْعَثِ ، ثنا الْمُسَيَّبُ بْنُ وَاضِحٍ ، ثنا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : رُبَّمَا قَالَ الْمُسَيَّبُ ، عَنْ عَزْرَةَ ، وَرُبَّمَا لَمْ يَقُلْ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُوتِرُ بِثَلاثِ رَكَعَاتٍ ، يَقْرَأُ فِيهَا بِ سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الأَعْلَى ، وقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ ، وقُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ، وَكَانَ يَقْنُتُ قَبْلَ الرُّكُوعِ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ إِذَا سَلَّمَ : سُبْحَانَ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوسِ " ، مَرَّتَيْنِ يُسِرُّهُمَا وَالثَّالِثَةَ يَجْهَرُ بِهَا ، وَيَمُدُّ بِهَا صَوْتَهُ .
Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform three rak'ahs of Witr, in which he would recite "Surah Al-A'la," "Surah Al-Kafirun," and "Surah Al-Ikhlas." Before going into ruku', he would recite the Du'a Qunoot. When he would finish with salam, he would recite this supplication: "Glory be to the Sovereign, free from all defects." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite these words in a low voice twice, and the third time he would recite them aloud, stretching his voice.
Hadith 1660
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الأَشْعَثِ ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ خَشْرَمٍ ، ثنا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ ، عَنْ فِطْرٍ ، عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُوتِرُ بِثَلاثٍ بِ سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الأَعْلَى ، وقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ ، وقُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ، وَيَقْنُتُ قَبْلَ الرُّكُوعِ ، وَإِذَا سَلَّمَ قَالَ : سُبْحَانَ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوسِ ، ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ يَمُدُّ بِهَا صَوْتَهُ ، فِي الأَخِيرَةِ يَقُولُ : رَبِّ الْمَلائِكَةِ وَالرُّوحِ " .
Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite "Surah Al-A'la," "Surah Al-Kafirun," and "Surah Al-Ikhlas" in the three rak'ahs of Witr, and he would recite the Qunoot supplication before going into bowing (ruku'). Then, when he finished with salam, he would say "Subhana al-Malik al-Quddus," and in the last time he would raise his voice, and he would say: "Rabb al-mala'ikati wa al-ruh," meaning "Lord of the angels and the spirit."
Hadith 1661
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، نا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، نا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الدَّشْتَكِيُّ ، نا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الرَّازِيُّ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ ، وَطَلْحَةَ ، عَنْ ذَرٍّ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُوتِرُ بِ سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الأَعْلَى ، وقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ ، وقُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ " . وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ أَبُو حَفْصٍ الأَبَّارُ ، ويَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ ، وَطَلْحَةَ ، رَوَاهُ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ مَعْنٍ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ وَحْدَهُ.
Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite "Surah Al-A'la", "Surah Al-Kafirun", and "Surah Al-Ikhlas" in the Witr prayer. This narration is also transmitted through another chain of transmission.
Hadith 1662
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَيَّاشٍ ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الزَّعْفَرَانِيُّ ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، أنا أَبَانُ بْنُ أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ النَّخَعِيِّ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " بِتُّ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لأَنْظُرَ كَيْفَ يَقْنُتُ فِي وِتْرِهِ ، فَقَنَتَ قَبْلَ الرُّكُوعِ ، ثُمَّ بَعَثْتُ أُمِّي أُمَّ عَبْدٍ ، فَقُلْتُ : تَبِيتِي مَعَ نِسَائِهِ وَانْظُرِي كَيْفَ يَقْنُتُ فِي وِتْرِهِ ، فَأَتَتْنِي فَأَخْبَرَتْنِي أَنَّهُ قَنَتَ قَبْلَ الرُّكُوعِ " . أَبَانُ مَتْرُوكٌ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One night I stayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in order to observe when he recites the Qunoot supplication in the Witr prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the Qunoot supplication before bowing (ruku‘). Then I sent my mother, Sayyidah Umm ‘Abd, and told her to stay with the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and observe how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recites the Qunoot supplication in the Witr prayer. So my mother came and informed me: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the Qunoot supplication before bowing (ruku‘). One of the narrators of this narration, Aban, is abandoned (matruk).
Hadith 1663
حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُؤَذِّنُ ، ثنا السَّرِيُّ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، ثنا قَبِيصَةُ ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبَانَ بْنِ أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " قَنَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْوِتْرِ قَبْلَ الرَّكْعَةِ ، قَالَ : فَأَرْسَلْتُ أُمِّي إِلَيْهِ الْقَابِلَةَ فَأَخْبَرَتْنِي أَنَّهُ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ " . أَبَانُ مَتْرُوكٌ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite the Qunoot supplication in Witr prayer before going into bowing (ruku‘). Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The next day I sent my mother, and she also said the same.
Hadith 1664
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ غَنَّامٍ ، ثنا عُقْبَةُ بْنُ مُكْرَمٍ ، ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ شِمْرٍ ، عَنْ سَلامٍ ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، وَعُمَرَ ، وَعُثْمَانَ ، وَعَلِيًّا ، يَقُولُونَ : " قَنَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي آخِرِ الْوِتْرِ ، وَكَانُوا يَفْعَلُونَ ذَلِكَ " .
Sayyiduna Suwaid bin Ghaflah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar, Sayyiduna Uthman, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with them) saying: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to recite the Du'a Qunoot in the last rak'ah of Witr, and these Companions also used to do the same.
Hadith 1665
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدِ بْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ ، ثنا قَتَادَةُ . ح وَثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ، ثنا أَبُو بَدْرٍ شُجَاعُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : " كَانَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لا يُسَلِّمُ فِي رَكْعَتَيِ الْوِتْرِ " .
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not say salam after performing the two rak'ahs of Witr.
Hadith 1666
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ ، ثنا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ عَنِ الْقُنُوتِ ، فَقَالَ : " قَنَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدَ الرُّكُوعِ " .
Muhammad bin Sirin narrates: I asked Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) about the supplication of Qunoot, so he replied: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the supplication of Qunoot after bowing (ruku‘).
Hadith 1667
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، ثنا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، ثنا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ ، قُلْتُ لأَنَسٍ : هَلْ قَنَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي صَلاةِ الصُّبْحِ ؟ قَالَ : " نَعَمْ ، بَعْدَ الرُّكُوعِ " ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ سُئِلَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ : هَلْ قَنَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي صَلاةِ الصُّبْحِ ؟ قَالَ : " نَعَمْ ، بَعْدَ الرُّكُوعِ يَسِيرًا " .
Muhammad bin Sirin narrates: I asked Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the Qunoot supplication in the morning prayer. He replied: "Yes, he did." The narrator states: Then the question was asked regarding this: Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recite the Qunoot supplication in the Fajr prayer? He replied: "Yes, he recited it shortly after the bowing (ruku’)."
Hadith 1668
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ الْحَنَّاطُ ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ أَبِي إِسْرَائِيلَ ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، ثنا الْعَوَّامُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي مَازِنٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ " أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، وَعُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَنَتَا فِي صَلاةِ الصُّبْحِ بَعْدَ الرُّكُوعِ " .
Abu Uthman narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to recite the Du'a Qunoot after the bowing (ruku') in the morning prayer.
Hadith 1669
ثنا أَبُو مُحَمَّدِ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ صَاعِدٍ إِمْلاءً ، حَدَّثَنَا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُبَيْلٍ ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ سَعْدًا صَلَّى بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءِ رَكْعَةً ، فَقُلْتُ : مَا هَذِهِ ؟ فَقَالَ : " رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُوتِرُ بِرَكْعَةٍ " .
Qais bin Abu Hazim narrates: I saw Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) performing one rak’ah after the ‘Isha prayer, so I asked: “Which prayer is this?” He replied: “I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performing one rak’ah of Witr.”
Hadith 1670
ثنا ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، ثنا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، ثنا هِقْلٌ ، عَنِ الأَوْزَاعِيِّ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ ثَابِتِ بْنِ ثَوْبَانَ ، أَنَّ سَعْدَ بْنَ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ صَلَّى الْعِشَاءَ ، ثُمَّ أَوْتَرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ : يَا أَبَا إِسْحَاقَ ، أَلَمْ أَرَكَ أَوْتَرْتَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ ؟ يَا أَعْوَرُ ، وَأَنْتَ تُعَلِّمُنِي دِينِي " .
Muhammad bin Abdur Rahman narrates: Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) performed the ‘Isha prayer, then performed one rak’ah of Witr. So a person asked him: “O Abu Ishaq! Did I not see you performing one rak’ah of Witr?” So he inquired, and Sayyiduna Sa’d said: “O blind one! Will you teach me my religion?”
Hadith 1671
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ بُهْلُولٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أبِي ، ثنا أَبُو عَامِرٍ ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، بِهَذَا نَحْوَهُ ، وَقَالَ : " أَنْتَ تُعَلِّمُنِي صَلاتِي ".
This narration is also transmitted with another chain, however, in it are the words: "Will you teach me the method of my prayer?"
Hadith 1672
ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا أَبُو يَحْيَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ ، ثنا مَكِّيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، ثنا حَنْظَلَةُ ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، " أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْتَرَ بِرَكْعَةٍ " .
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform one rak'ah of Witr.
Hadith 1673
ثنا ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ بُهْلُولٍ ، ثنا أبِي ، ثنا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، عَنْ فُلَيْحِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لا يَغْلِبُنِي اللَّيْلَةَ عَلَى الْمَقَامِ أَحَدٌ ، فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ حَتَّى وَضَعَ يَدَهُ بَيْنَ كَتِفَيَّ فَالْتَفَتُّ فَإِذَا أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عُثْمَانُ ، فَتَنَحَّيْتُ فَافْتَتَحَ الْقُرْآنَ فَقَرَأَهُ فِي رَكْعَةٍ ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، إِنَّمَا صَلَّيْتَ رَكْعَةً ؟ فَقَالَ : " هِيَ وِتْرِي " .
Abdur Rahman bin Uthman narrates: Once I thought that tonight no one would be able to separate me from Maqam Ibrahim. A person came and placed his hand between my two shoulders. I turned around and saw that it was the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him). I stepped back, and he began reciting the Qur'an and completed it in one rak'ah. I said: "O Commander of the Faithful! You performed one rak'ah," so he replied: "That was my witr."
Hadith 1674
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا زِيَادُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، ثنا نَافِعُ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَجُلٌ لابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ : " أَلا تَعْجَبُ مِنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ إِنَّهُ يُوتِرُ بِرَكْعَةٍ ، قَالَ : أَحْسَنَ إِنَّهُ فَقِيهٌ " .
Ibn Abi Mulaykah narrates: A man said to Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): "Are you not amazed at Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), he performs Witr as a single rak'ah?" So Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: "That is fine, he is a jurist (faqih)."
Hadith 1675
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا أَبُو حَاتِمٍ الرَّازِيُّ ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عُفَيْرٍ ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ بِنْتِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، " أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقْرَأُ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الَّتِي يُوتِرُ بَعْدَهُمَا بِ سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الأَعْلَى ، وقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ ، وَيَقْرَأُ فِي الْوِتْرِ بِ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ، وقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ ، وقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ " .
Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: In the first two rak'ahs after which the Witr rak'ah would be performed, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite "Surah Al-A'la" and "Surah Al-Kafirun", and then in the Witr rak'ah he would recite "Surah Al-Ikhlas", "Surah Al-Falaq", and "Surah An-Nas".

حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا أَبُو إِسْمَاعِيلَ التِّرْمِذِيُّ ، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، " أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِثَلاثٍ ، يَقْرَأُ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الأُولَى بِ سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الأَعْلَى ، وَفِي الثَّانِيَةِ : قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ ، وَفِي الثَّالِثَةِ : قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ، وقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ ، وقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ " .
Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform three rak‘ahs of Witr; in the first rak‘ah he would recite “Surah Al-A‘la,” in the second rak‘ah “Surah Al-Kafirun,” and in the third rak‘ah he would recite “Surah Al-Ikhlas,” “Surah Al-Falaq,” and “Surah An-Nas.”
Hadith 1677
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْفَارِسِيُّ ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ خَرَّزَاذَ ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عُفَيْرٍ ، ثنا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْوِتْرِ ، فَقَالَ : " افْصِلْ بَيْنَ الْوَاحِدَةِ مِنَ الثِّنْتَيْنِ بِالسَّلامِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A person asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about Witr, so he (peace be upon him) said: "Separate the two rak'ahs and the one rak'ah by saying salam between them."
Hadith 1678
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ إِلْيَاسَ بْنِ صَدَقَةَ ، ثنا أَبُو الأَسْوَدِ ، ثنا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ بُكَيْرٍ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِثْلَهُ ، وَقَالَ فِيهِ : " الْوِتْرُ وَاحِدَةٌ افْصِلْ بَيْنَ الثِّنْتَيْنِ وَالْوَاحِدَةِ ".
The same narration is transmitted from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) with another chain of transmission; however, in it are these words: "Witr is one rak'ah, so create a separation between two and one."
Hadith 1679
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الأَشْعَثِ ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُسَبِّحُ عَلَى الرَّاحِلَةِ أَيْنَ تَتَوَجَّهُ ، وَيُوتِرُ عَلَيْهَا ، غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ لا يُصَلِّي عَلَيْهَا الْفَرِيضَةَ " .
Salim narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both): The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer voluntary prayers on his mount, regardless of which direction it was facing. He would also perform Witr on it, but he would not perform obligatory prayers on his mount.
Hadith 1680
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، ثنا عِيسَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ، ثنا اللَّيْثُ ، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ الْهَادِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُوتِرُ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform the Witr prayer on his mount.
