Discussion on Witr Prayer
بَابُ صِفَةِ الْوِتْرِ وَأَنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِفَرْضٍ , وَأَنَّهُ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُوتِرُ عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ
Chapter on the description of Witr, that it is not obligatory, and that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would perform Witr on a camel

Hadith 1631
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَلَفٍ ، ثنا شُجَاعُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ، نا أَبُو جَنَابٍ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " ثَلاثٌ هُنَّ عَلَيَّ فَرَائِضُ ، وَهُنَّ لَكُمْ تَطَوُّعٌ : النَّحْرُ ، وَالْوِتْرُ ، وَرَكْعَتَا الْفَجْرِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There are three things that are obligatory upon me and are voluntary (nafl) for you: offering the sacrifice (qurbani), performing the Witr prayer, and performing the two Sunnah rak‘ahs of Fajr.”
Hadith 1632
حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ الْمَرْوَرُوذِيُّ ، قَالَ : وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ جَدِّي ، وَحَدَّثَنِي بِهِ أَبِي ، عَنْ جَدِّي ، ثنا بَقِيَّةُ ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَرَّرٍ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أُمِرْتُ بِالْوِتْرِ وَالأَضْحَى ، وَلَمْ يُعْزَمْ عَلَيَّ " .
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been commanded to perform the Witr prayer and to offer sacrifice, and I have not been made obligated to do so."
Hadith 1633
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، وَمَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ أَسِيرُ مَعَ ابْنِ عُمَرَ بِطَرِيقِ مَكَّةَ ، قَالَ سَعِيدٌ : فَلَمَّا خَشِيتُ الصُّبْحَ نزلت فَأَوْتَرْتُ ثُمَّ أَدْرَكْتُهُ ، فَقَالَ لِيَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ : " أَيْنَ كُنْتَ ؟ " ، قُلْتُ : خَشِيتُ الْفَجْرَ فنزلت فَأَوْتَرْتُ ، قَالَ : " أَوَلَيْسَ لَكَ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ ؟ " ، فَقُلْتُ : بَلَى ، قَالَ : فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " كَانَ يُوتِرُ عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ " .
Saeed bin Yasar reports: I was traveling with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) on the way to Makkah. When I feared that dawn was about to break, I got down from my mount and performed the Witr prayer. Then I met Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he asked me: "Where were you?" I replied: "I feared that dawn would break, so I got down from my mount and performed the Witr prayer." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked: "Is it not sufficient for you to follow Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)?" I replied: "Of course, it is." He then said: "Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform Witr on his camel."
Hadith 1634
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، ثنا دَاوُدُ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، وَمُوسَى يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُقْبَةَ ، وَعَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُوتِرُ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ ، وَيُصَلِّي التَّطَوُّعَ عَلَيْهَا حَيْثُمَا تَوَجَّهَتْ بِهِ يُومِئُ بِرَأْسِهِ إِيمَاءً " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates about the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform voluntary prayers on top of his mount, regardless of which direction it was facing, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would gesture with his head (for bowing and prostration)."
Hadith 1635
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بِشْرٍ ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلانَ ، ثنا نَافِعٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، " أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ وَيُوتِرُ عَلَيْهَا ، وَيُذْكَرُ ذَلِكَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " .
It is narrated about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he used to perform the Witr prayer on his mount, and he mentioned regarding the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do the same.
Hadith 1636
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّبَّاحُ ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ تَطَوُّعًا ، فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يُوتِرَ نزل فَأَوْتَرَ عَلَى الأَرْضِ " ، قَالَ : وَقَالَ نَافِعٌ : كَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ " رُبَّمَا أَوْتَرَ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ وَرُبَّمَا نزل ".
Saeed bin Jubair narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to perform voluntary prayers on his mount, but when he had to perform Witr, he would dismount and perform Witr. Nafi' narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would sometimes perform Witr on his mount and sometimes dismount and then perform Witr.
