Kuraib narrates: On one occasion, Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Shall I tell you about the way the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prayer during travel? We replied: Yes! So he said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was at his residence and the sun had declined (i.e., it was noon), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform the Zuhr and Asr prayers together before setting out on his journey. And if, while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was at home, the sun had not yet declined (i.e., it was not yet noon) and he intended to depart, he would set out, and when the time for Asr arrived, he would stop during the journey and perform both Zuhr and Asr prayers together at that time. Similarly, if the time for Maghrib arrived while he was at his residence, he would perform Maghrib and Isha prayers together, and if the time for Maghrib had not yet arrived, he would depart and, at the time of Isha, perform both prayers together. This narration from Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) is also transmitted through some other chains of narration.
Hadith 1451
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: It was the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when the sun would decline, he would perform the Zuhr and Asr prayers together. And when he would set out before the sun’s decline, he would delay both these prayers until he performed them both at the time of the Asr prayer.
Hadith 1452
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) camped at a place and the sun had already declined, he would not set out until he had performed the Asr prayer. And if he had set out before the sun's decline, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform both prayers at the time of Asr prayer.
Hadith 1453
Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to set out after the sun had passed its zenith, he would combine the Zuhr and Asr prayers and perform them together. And if he intended to set out before that, he would delay the Zuhr prayer until the time of Asr and then perform them together.
Hadith 1454
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had to combine the Zuhr and Asr prayers during a journey, he would delay the Zuhr prayer until the beginning time of Asr arrived, and then he would perform both prayers together at that time.
Hadith 1455
Ibn Shihab narrates from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to set out on a journey before the sun had declined, he would depart, and when the time for ‘Asr began, he would halt and combine both prayers. And if he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not set out until after the sun had declined, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform the Zuhr prayer and then depart.
Hadith 1456
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to combine the Zuhr and Asr prayers, he would delay the Zuhr prayer until the beginning of the time for Asr had started, then after that he would perform both prayers together.
Hadith 1457
Nafi' narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to Makkah. He received news of the illness of his wife, Safiyyah bint Abu Ubaid, so Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) hastened his journey. When the sun had set, one of his companions said: The time for prayer has come, but Sayyiduna Abdullah remained silent. The companion who had asked him to pray thought that surely he must have some knowledge about this matter that I am not aware of. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) continued traveling until the twilight disappeared. Then he stopped and called the iqamah for prayer; he would not give the adhan for prayer while traveling. Here, the Nishapuri narrator has narrated one word differently; the following words are agreed upon by the narrators. They narrate: Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and performed Maghrib and Isha prayers together. Then he explained: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to travel quickly, he would combine Maghrib and Isha prayers a little while after the twilight had disappeared. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform prayer on the back of his mount during travel, regardless of which direction the mount was facing. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) informed the people: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do the same.
Hadith 1458
Salim narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) received news of the illness of his (wife) Safiyyah, so he began to travel quickly. Then he narrated a similar report from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), in which are the words: "A little while after the twilight has set." Ibn Wahb has followed him in this narration.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to set out on a journey after the sun had declined, he would combine the Zuhr and Asr prayers and perform them together. And when he intended to set out before that, he would delay the Zuhr prayer and perform the Asr prayer early, and would perform both prayers together.
Hadith 1460

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had to travel quickly, he used to combine the Maghrib and Isha prayers. One narrator has reported the words "until a quarter of the night." Another narrator has also reported the words "until a quarter of the night."

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Tabuk, (it was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ that) when the sun had declined before his departure, he would perform the Zuhr and Asr prayers together. And if he departed before the sun had declined, he would delay the Zuhr prayer until he halted for the Asr prayer. Similarly, regarding the Maghrib prayer, if the sun set before his departure, the Prophet ﷺ would perform the Maghrib and Isha prayers together. And if he departed before the sun had set, he would delay the Maghrib prayer, then halt for the Isha prayer, and perform both prayers together.

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Tabuk, it was the practice of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (during the journey, at the time of setting out from a stop) that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out before the sun had declined, he would delay the Zuhr prayer until the time of Asr, and then perform both prayers together at the time of Asr. And when he set out after the sun had declined, he would perform Zuhr and Asr prayers together, and then set out. Similarly, when he set out before Maghrib, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would delay the Maghrib prayer until he performed it together with the Isha prayer. And when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out after the sun had set, then he would perform the Isha prayer early and combine it with Maghrib. Imam Abu Dawood has stated: This narration has only been transmitted by Qatadah.
Hadith 1465
This narration is also transmitted with another chain of transmission.
Hadith 1466
Nafi’ reports: Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) received news of his wife Safiyyah’s illness while he was on a journey. He increased his pace, and when the sun had set, he was asked to stop for prayer, but he continued walking. When the twilight was about to disappear, he halted and performed the Maghrib prayer. Then he waited until the twilight had disappeared, and then he performed the ‘Isha prayer. Then he told us: Whenever the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had something important to do, he would do likewise.
Hadith 1467
Nafi’ narrates a similar report from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), however, in it are these words: Until he halted before the twilight had set, and performed the Maghrib prayer, and then he waited until the twilight disappeared, then he performed the ‘Isha prayer. Then he explained: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would travel quickly, he would do as I have just done.
Hadith 1468
Nafi’ narrates: I was traveling with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), he was going towards his land. On the way, he stopped at a place. A man came to him and informed him: (his wife) Safiyyah bint Abu Ubaid is in a critical condition, and I think you will not reach her before (her passing). The narrator says: This was after Asr. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) quickly set out from there, and a man from the Quraysh was also with him. We continued traveling until the sun set. I had a close relationship with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), and he used to perform prayers very regularly. I said: The time for prayer has come. He did not pay attention to me and continued walking as before, until when the last part of twilight remained, he stopped and performed the Maghrib prayer. Then he gave the Iqamah for prayer, and during this the twilight disappeared, so he led us in the Isha prayer. Then he turned to us and informed us: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) needed to hasten in a matter, he used to do likewise.

The same narration is also transmitted with another chain from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, from the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.

Nafi' narrates: Once we were coming from Makkah with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), when on the way he was informed about the severe illness of his wife Safiyyah, so he hastened the journey. It was his practice that as soon as the sun would set, he would dismount and perform the Maghrib prayer at that very time.
