Hadith 1109
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand for prayer, he would say the takbeer and raise both hands up to the shoulders. When he completed his recitation and was about to go into ruku, he would do the same. When he rose from ruku, he would do the same. After that, he would not raise his hands during the prayer, except when he was sitting; when he stood up after performing two rak‘ahs, then at that time he would again raise his hands in the same way and say the takbeer.
Hadith 1110
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand for prayer, he would raise both his hands until they were level with his shoulders, then he would say the takbeer. Then, when he was about to go into ruku‘, he would do the same, and when he raised his head from ruku‘, he would do the same. However, when he raised his head from sajdah, he would not do so.
Hadith 1111
Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand for prayer, he would raise both his hands until they were in line with his shoulders, then he would say the takbir. When he was about to go into bowing (ruku‘), he would raise both his hands until they were in line with his shoulders, then he would go into ruku‘. When he would rise from ruku‘, he would raise both his hands until they were in line with his shoulders, then he would recite “Sami‘ Allahu liman hamidah,” then proceed to prostration (sujud). Between the prostrations, he would not raise his hands. Throughout the entire prayer, whenever he would say the takbir while going into ruku‘, he would raise his hands.
Hadith 1112
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he stood up for prayer, he raised both his hands until they were in line with his shoulders, then he said the takbeer. He did the same when he raised his head from bowing (ruku) and said "Sami' Allahu liman hamidah," but he did not do this when he raised his head from prostration (sajdah).
Hadith 1113
This narration from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) is also present with another chain of transmission, and in it are these words: He raised his hands and then said the takbeer.
Hadith 1114
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand for prayer, he would raise both his hands until they were level with his shoulders, and (at the same time) he would say the takbeer (Allahu Akbar). (The rest of the hadith is as previously mentioned.)
Hadith 1115
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to raise both his hands until they would be at the level of his shoulders or close to it (after that he narrated the hadith as previously mentioned).
Hadith 1116
The same narration is transmitted from Zuhri with another chain, in which these words are present: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) began the prayer with the opening takbir, he would raise both hands at the time he was saying the takbir, until both hands reached the level of his shoulders (after this, the narration continues as previously mentioned).
Hadith 1117
Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand for prayer, he would raise both hands up to the shoulders and say the takbeer. When he was about to go into ruku, he would raise his hands up to the shoulders and say the takbeer, then go into ruku. When he would raise his head from ruku, he would raise both hands up to the shoulders, then recite “Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah,” then go into prostration. Between the prostrations, he would not raise his hands. In every rak’ah, he would raise his hands while saying the takbeer, until the prayer was completed.
Hadith 1118
Nafi' reports: Whenever Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) saw a person who did not raise his hands while bowing in prayer, he would pick up pebbles to throw at him until that person started raising his hands.
Hadith 1119
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to raise his hands at the beginning of the prayer and while going into bowing (ruku‘). This narration has been transmitted as a marfu‘ hadith from Humaid only by ‘Abdulwahhab; the correct version is that it is reported as the action of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith 1120
Sayyiduna Wa'il bin Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raise his hands at the beginning of the prayer until both his hands were level with his shoulders. Then, when he was about to bow (ruku‘), he did so (i.e., raised his hands), and when he raised his head (from ruku‘), he did so (i.e., raised his hands). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his right hand on his right knee and his left hand on his left knee while sitting, then he made a circle with his (right hand) and pointed in this manner. The narrator Sufyan demonstrated by pointing with his index finger. The narrator says: I came to these gentlemen (i.e., the noble Companions) and found them in such a state that even in the cold season, while wrapped in their upper garments, they would perform the raising of the hands (raf‘ al-yadayn).
Hadith 1121
Husayn bin Abdur Rahman narrates: We were present in the company of Ibrahim Nakha’i when Amr bin Marwah informed him of this matter. He said: We performed prayer in the mosque of the Hadramis, and Alqamah bin Wa’il narrated from his father: He saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) raising his hands at the beginning of the prayer, when going into bowing (ruku‘), and when going into prostration (sujud). So Ibrahim Nakha’i said: “I think your father saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) doing this only on that one day, and remembered it. So did not Sayyiduna Abdullah (bin Mas‘ud) remember this as well?” After that, Ibrahim Nakha’i said: “Raising the hands is to be done only at the beginning of the prayer.” These are the words of the narrator named Jarir.

Sayyiduna Malik bin Huwairith (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to raise his hands at the beginning of the prayer, when going into bowing (ruku‘), and when raising his head from bowing. Ibn Mubashshir (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated these words: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to raise his hands at the beginning of the prayer, when he was about to go into bowing, and when he raised his head from bowing. Abu ‘Awanah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whenever he said the takbir, went into bowing, raised his head from bowing, and recited “Sami‘ Allahu liman hamidah,” would raise both hands up to the shoulders.
Hadith 1124
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shall I show you the way the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to pray? Then he said the takbir and raised both hands, then before going into ruku‘ he said the takbir and raised both hands, then when he recited “Sami‘ Allahu liman hamidah” he raised both hands. After finishing the prayer, he said: “Do like this.” The narrator says: He did not raise his hands between the two prostrations.
Hadith 1125
The same narration is also transmitted from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with another chain of transmission. Two narrators have reported it as a marfu‘ hadith from Hammad, while the rest of the narrators, apart from these two, have reported it as a mawquf narration. I heard Qadi Abu Ja‘far saying: "Previously, my stance was the same as that of the people of Iraq, but then I saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a dream performing prayer. He (peace be upon him) raised his hands while saying the opening takbir of the prayer, then raised his hands while going into ruku‘, and then raised his hands when rising from ruku‘."
Hadith 1126
Sayyiduna Bara’ bin ‘Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say the takbir and raise both hands, we would see that both his thumbs had reached close to his ears.
Hadith 1127
Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrating this hadith in a gathering in which Sayyiduna Ka’b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present. Sayyiduna Bara’ said: “I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raising his hands with the first takbeer at the beginning of the prayer.”
Hadith 1128
Abdullah bin Mubarak says: In my view, the narration attributed to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) is not authentic; the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performed only one raising of the hands at the beginning of the prayer, and did not raise the hands after that. In my view, the authentic hadith is the one in which it is mentioned: the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) raised his hands when going into bowing (ruku') and when rising from bowing. Abdullah bin Mubarak stated this: Ubaidullah Umari, Imam Malik, Ma'mar, Sufyan, Yunus, and Muhammad bin Abu Hafsah have narrated from Zuhri, from Salim, from his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) this narration.
Hadith 1129
Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: He saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raising his hands at the beginning of the prayer; the Prophet (peace be upon him) raised both his hands up to his ears, and after that did not raise his hands until he completed the prayer.
Hadith 1130
The same narration is also reported with another chain from Sayyiduna Bara’ bin ‘Azib (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith 1131
Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: He saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he stood for prayer, he raised his hands while saying the takbir. This narration is also transmitted with another chain, and this is correct. The narrator named Yazid was prompted in his old age to narrate these words: "Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do so again." So he accepted this prompting, and the words of this narration became confused for him.
Hadith 1132
Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he stood up to pray, he raised both his hands up to his ears while saying the takbir. After that, he did not raise his hands again (in the prayer). The narrator, Ali bin Asim, states: When I came to Kufa, I was informed that a narrator named Yazid was alive. I went to him and he narrated this hadith to me. He said: Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila narrated this statement of Sayyiduna Bara’, who said: “I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he stood up for prayer, he raised both his hands up to his ears while saying the takbir.” I said to him: Ibn Abi Laila narrated this to me and also included these words: “The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not raise his hands again after that.” So he replied: “I do not remember these words.” I repeated my statement to him, and he said the same: “I do not remember.”
Hadith 1133
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I have performed prayers behind the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), behind Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and behind Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); these personalities used to raise their hands only at the beginning of the prayer with the first takbeer. The narrator named Ishaq has stated: We will adopt this narration regarding the method of performing prayer. The narration of this hadith is unique to the narrator Muhammad bin Jabir, and he is weak. Muhammad bin Jabir has narrated it from the narrator Hammad, from Ibrahim Nakha'i, whereas narrators other than Hammad have narrated it from Ibrahim Nakha'i as a mursal narration, as the action of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) himself. They have not narrated it as a marfu' hadith, which would be attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and this is the correct narration.
Hadith 1134
Sayyiduna Wa’il bin Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in order to see for myself how he performed prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) faced the Qiblah, then while saying the takbir, he raised both hands up to his ears. Then, when he went into ruku‘, he again performed raf‘ al-yadayn until he raised them to the same place. Then, when he raised his head from ruku‘, he raised both hands to the same height. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went into sujud, he placed both hands opposite the same part of his head.
Hadith 1135
The same narration is also reported from Wa'il bin Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) with another chain of transmission; however, there is no mention of prostration in it.
Hadith 1136
The same narration is transmitted with another chain of narration from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, reports: The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, at the beginning of the prayer would raise both hands up to the shoulders, and when he would go into bowing (ruku‘), and when he would raise his head from bowing, he would perform the raising of the hands in the same manner.
