Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when the sun had declined and said: “O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Stand up and perform the Zuhr prayer.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and performed the Zuhr prayer after the sun had declined. Then some time passed, so much so that when a person’s shadow became equal to his height, he (Jibreel) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of Asr and said: “O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Stand up and perform the Asr prayer.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and performed the Asr prayer. Then some time passed until the sun set, so Jibreel (peace be upon him) said: “Stand up and perform the Maghrib prayer.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and performed this prayer when the sun had completely set. Then some time passed until the twilight disappeared, so Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “Stand up and perform the Isha prayer.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and performed this prayer. Then Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when the true dawn had appeared and said: “O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Stand up and perform the prayer.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and performed the Fajr prayer. The next day, Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of Zuhr when a man’s shadow had become equal to his height and said: “O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Stand up and perform the Zuhr prayer.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and performed the Zuhr prayer. Then Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to him when a man’s shadow had become twice his height and said: “O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Stand up and perform the Asr prayer.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and performed the Asr prayer. Then he came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of Maghrib when the sun had set; this was the same time (there was no delay in it). He said: “Stand up and perform the Maghrib prayer.” So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Maghrib prayer. Then Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for the Isha prayer when a third of the night had passed and said: “Stand up and perform the Isha prayer.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed this prayer. Then he came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for the Fajr prayer when the light had spread well and said: “Stand up and perform the Fajr prayer.” Then he explained: “The time between these two is the (prescribed legal) time for the prayers.”

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to inform him about the prayer. He came to him at the time when the sun had declined. Jibril (peace be upon him) stepped forward, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood behind him, and the people stood behind the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he performed the Zuhr prayer. Then Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him at the time when a man's shadow had become equal to his height. Jibril (peace be upon him) stepped forward, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood behind him, and the people stood behind the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Asr prayer. Then he came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time when the sun had set. Jibril (peace be upon him) stood forward, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood behind him, and the people stood behind the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They performed the Maghrib prayer. After this, he mentioned the rest of the hadith, however, in it are these words: The next day, Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time when the sun had set; it was the same time. Jibril stepped forward, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood behind him, and the people stood behind the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They performed the Maghrib prayer. At the end of this narration, it is stated: Jibril (peace be upon him) said: "Between these two prayers is the (prescribed) time for the prayers." The narrator states: Once, a man asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the (timings of) prayers, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer in the same manner as Jibril (peace be upon him) had led him. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Where is the one who asked about the prayer? Between these two (times) is the time for prayer."

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Makkah when the sun had declined. He said to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “Call the people to prayer.” This was at the time when prayer had been made obligatory upon the people. Jibril (peace be upon him) stood in front of you, and the people stood behind the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator states that they performed four rak‘ahs of prayer in which there was no loud recitation. The people continued to follow the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to pray following Jibril (peace be upon him). Then some time passed, and when the time for ‘Asr came, Jibril (peace be upon him) led them in four rak‘ahs, and in this too there was no loud recitation. The Muslims continued to follow the prayer of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to pray following Jibril (peace be upon him). Then some time passed until the sun set, and he led the people in three rak‘ahs, in the first two of which he recited aloud, and in the third rak‘ah he did not recite aloud. Then some time passed until a third of the night had passed, and he led the people in four rak‘ahs of prayer, in the first two of which he recited aloud, and in the last two rak‘ahs he did not recite aloud. Then some time passed until the true dawn appeared, and he led the people in two rak‘ahs of prayer, and in these two rak‘ahs he recited aloud.

The son of Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his father: Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when the sun had declined (after this, the narrator mentioned the timings of the prayers and stated): Then Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when the sun had set, and said: “Stand up and offer the prayer.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the prayer. Then, on the next day, he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time when the sun had set (i.e., the time for Maghrib prayer was the same), and said: “Stand up and offer the prayer.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the prayer.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was Jibril (peace be upon him) who came to teach you your religion." Then he performed the prayer. After that, the narrator mentioned the narration regarding the times of the prayers, in which these words are: Then he (the Prophet, peace be upon him) performed the Maghrib prayer when the sun had set. Regarding the next day, the narrator reported: Then he (Jibril) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the next day and he performed the Maghrib prayer when the sun had set; it was the same time.

Muhammad bin Ammar narrated regarding Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that he mentioned that the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, told him this: "Jibril (Gabriel), peace be upon him, came to you (the Prophet) and led all the prayers at different times except for the Maghrib prayer (which he led at the same time)." The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He came to me at the time of Maghrib and led me in prayer when the sun had set. Then he came to me (the narrator says: the next day) at the time of Maghrib and led the prayer at the same time when the sun had set; he did not make any change in it."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the prayer was made obligatory, Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and led him in the Zuhr prayer. After this, the narrator mentioned the timings of the prayers, in which these words are found: Jibreel (peace be upon him) led the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Maghrib prayer when the sun had set. Regarding the next day, the narrator has transmitted the same words: He led the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Maghrib prayer when the sun had set.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is a beginning time for prayer and an ending time. The beginning time for Dhuhr is when the sun passes its zenith, and its ending time is when the time for Asr begins. The beginning time for Asr is when it starts, and its ending time is when the sun becomes yellow. The beginning time for Maghrib is when the sun sets, and its ending time is when the twilight disappears. The beginning time for Isha is when the twilight disappears, and its ending time is when half the night has passed. The beginning time for Fajr is when the true dawn appears, and its ending time is when the sun rises." This narration is not authentic as a musnad narration; other narrators have transmitted it as a mursal narration from Mujahid.

Sulaiman bin Buraidah narrates from his father that a man came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and asked him about the times of prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Pray with us for two days." The narrator states that the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered Bilal to give the call to prayer when the sun had declined, then the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered him and he gave the iqamah, then the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the Zuhr prayer. Then he ordered him and he gave the iqamah for Asr while the sun was still high, bright, and shining. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered him and he gave the iqamah for Maghrib when the sun had set. Then, by the order of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he gave the iqamah for Isha when the twilight had disappeared. Then, by the order of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he gave the iqamah for Fajr when the true dawn had appeared.
When the second day came, the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed him to perform the Zuhr prayer at a cooler time, so he performed it at a cooler time. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed him, so he gave the iqamah for Asr while the sun was still high, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed this prayer a little later than he had on the first day. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed him, so he gave the iqamah for Maghrib before the twilight had disappeared. Then, by the order of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he gave the iqamah for Fajr when the light had spread. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: "Where is the person who asked about the times of prayer? The times of your prayers are between these two times which you have seen."

The same narration is also transmitted with another chain, however, in it are these words: "Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to give the Iqamah for the Maghrib prayer at a time when the sun had set. Then on the next day, he ordered the Iqamah for the Maghrib prayer at a time when the twilight had not yet disappeared."
Hadith 1037

Abu Bakr bin Musa narrates from his father regarding this incident of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): A man came to him and asked about the times of the prayers. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not give him any answer. He instructed Sayyiduna Bilal, so he gave the iqamah for the Fajr prayer at the time when true dawn had appeared, and at that time, due to darkness, no person could recognize another. Then, under the command of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Zuhr prayer when the sun had declined, and a man would estimate whether midday had passed or not, though the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had more knowledge about it. Then, under the command of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Asr prayer when the sun was still high. Then, under the command of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Maghrib prayer when the sun had set. Then, under the command of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Isha prayer when the twilight had disappeared.
Then, on the next day, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Fajr prayer, and when he finished the prayer, a man could say that the sun had risen or was about to rise. Then, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Zuhr prayer until he performed it close to the time of the previous day's Asr prayer. Then, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Asr prayer, and when the people finished the prayer, a man could say that the sun had turned red (i.e., the sunlight had faded). Then, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Maghrib prayer until it was performed shortly before the twilight disappeared. Then, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Isha prayer so much that a third of the night had passed.
The next morning, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called the man who had asked the question and said: "Between these two times is the time (for these prayers)."
Hadith 1038

Abu Bakr bin Abu Musa narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him): A man came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and asked him about the prayers, but he did not give him any answer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), so he gave the iqamah for the morning prayer when the true dawn had appeared. The Prophet (peace be upon him) performed that prayer. Then, under the command of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Zuhr prayer at a time when a person would think that the sun had declined or had not yet declined; however, the Prophet (peace be upon him) knew better about it. Then, under the command of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Asr prayer at a time when the sun was still high. Then, under the command of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Maghrib prayer when the sun had set. Then, under the command of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Isha prayer when the twilight had disappeared.
The narrator states: The next day, the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the Fajr prayer at a time when a person would think that the sun had risen or had not yet risen; however, the Prophet (peace be upon him) knew better about it. Then, the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the Zuhr prayer at the same time as he had performed the Asr prayer on the previous day. When he performed the Asr prayer, a person would think that the sun had turned red, meaning the sunlight had faded. Then, the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the Maghrib prayer shortly before the twilight had disappeared. Then, he performed the Isha prayer after one third of the night had passed. Then, he asked: "Where is the person who asked the question? Between these two times is the specific time for the prayers."
Hadith 1039

The same narration, with another chain of transmission, is reported from Abu Bakr bin Musa, from his father, from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The narrator, while mentioning this hadith, has reported these words: "So they gave the iqamah for the Maghrib prayer when the sun had set." The narrator says that then, on the next day, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) delayed the Maghrib prayer until it was near the disappearance of the twilight. The narrator named Qadi has transmitted it in this same brief form.
