بَابُ مَا فِي الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ مِنْ غَيْرِ تَوْقِيتٍ
Chapter on wiping over the khuffayn without a set time limit
Hadith 779
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدِ بْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، نا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، نا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ ، عَنْ زُبَيْدِ بْنِ الصَّلْتِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : " إِذَا تَوَضَّأَ أَحَدُكُمْ وَلَبِسَ خُفَّيْهِ فَلْيَمْسَحْ عَلَيْهِمَا ، وَلْيُصَلِّ فِيهَا وَلا يَخْلَعْهُمَا إِنْ شَاءَ إِلا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ " . قَالَ :.
Zubayd bin Salat narrates that I heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: "When a person performs ablution and puts on leather socks, he can wipe over them and perform prayer. If he wishes, he does not need to remove them, except in the state of major impurity (janabah), in which case the ruling is different."
Hadith 780
وَحَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، وَثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِثْلَهُ . قَالَ ابْنُ صَاعِدٍ : وَمَا عَلِمْتُ أَحَدًا جَاءَ بِهِ إِلا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى.
The same narration is also transmitted with another chain from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator named Ibn Sa‘id states: "To my knowledge, only Asad bin Musa has narrated this hadith."
Hadith 781
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ ، نا مِقْدَامُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْغَفَّارِ بْنُ دَاوُدَ الْحَرَّانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، وَثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِذَا تَوَضَّأَ أَحَدُكُمْ وَلَبِسَ خُفَّيْهِ فَلْيُصَلِّ فِيهِمَا ، وَلْيَمْسَحْ عَلَيْهِمَا ثُمَّ لا يَخْلَعْهُمَا إِنْ شَاءَ إِلا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ " .
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person performs ablution and puts on his socks, he can pray in them. He may wipe over them, and if he wishes, he does not need to remove them, except in the case of major ritual impurity (janabah), for which the ruling is different."
Hadith 782
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْمُسْتَمْلِي ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ ، نا بُنْدَارٌ ، وبِشْرُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ الْعَقَدِيُّ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبَانٍ ، قَالُوا : نا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَجِيدِ ، ثنا الْمُهَاجِرُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ أَبُو مَخْلَدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " رُخِّصَ لِلْمُسَافِرِ ثَلاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيهِنَّ ، وَلِلْمُقِيمِ يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً إِذَا تَطَهَّرَ فَلَبِسَ خُفَّيْهِ أَنْ يَمْسَحَ عَلَيْهِمَا " . وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ َحْيَى بْنُ حَكِيمٍ الْمُقَوِّمُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ . وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ أَصْحَابُ بُنْدَارٍ عَنْهُ ، وَأَصْحَابُ ابْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبَانَ الْبَلْخِيِّ عَنْهُ ، بِمُتَابَعَةِ ابْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ عَلَى قَوْلِهِ " فَلَبِسَ خُفَّيْهِ ".
Abdur Rahman bin Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from his father regarding the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that he granted permission to the traveler for three days and three nights, and to the resident for one day and one night. "When he puts on the leather socks while in a state of ablution, the permission is that he may wipe over both socks during ablution." This narration is also transmitted with some other chains of transmission.
Hadith 783
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ زَكَرِيَّا ، ثنا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، ثنا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : " لَوْ كَانَ الدِّينُ بِالرَّأْيِ لَكَانَ أَسْفَلُ الْخُفِّ أَوْلَى بِالْمَسْحِ مِنْ أَعْلاهُ ، لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ عَلَى ظَاهَرِ خُفَّيْهِ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If the rulings of religion were based on opinion, then the bottom part of the leather socks would have been more deserving (of wiping) than the upper part, but I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wiping over the upper part."
Hadith 784
نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، نا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ بْنِ زِيَادٍ ، نا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ " .
Imam Zaid, on the authority of his father, on the authority of his grandfather, narrates the statement of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed me regarding wiping over the leather socks: "Wipe over the leather socks."
Hadith 785
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الشَّافِعِيُّ ، نا أَبُو عُمَارَةَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْمَهْدِيِّ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْعَطَّارُ ، نا شَبَابَةُ ، نا وَرْقَاءُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " كَانَ يَمْسَحُ عَلَى الْجَبَائِرِ " . لا يَصِحُّ مَرْفُوعًا ، وَأَبُو عُمَارَةَ ضَعِيفٌ جِدًّا.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to wipe over the bandage. This narration is not authentic regarding its being marfu‘. Its narrator Abu ‘Ammarah is very weak.
Hadith 786
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ خَلْدُونٍ ، نا الْهَيْثَمُ بْنُ جَمِيلٍ ، ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ ، عَنْ حَمَّادٍ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، وَالأَسْوَدِ فِي الرَّجُلِ يَتَوَضَّأُ وَيَمْسَحُ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ ثُمَّ يَخْلَعْهُمَا ، قَالا : " يَغْسِلُ رِجْلَيْهِ " .
It is narrated about Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, Alqamah, and Aswad that regarding a person who performs ablution and wipes over his socks, then removes them, both of them said: "He will wash his feet."
