Chapter on the concession of wiping over the khuffayn, what is related to it, and differences in narrations
Hadith 747
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ مُبَشِّرٍ ، نا أَبُو مُوسَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ مُبَشِّرٍ ، نا أَبُو الأَشْعَثِ ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ، نا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ الثَّقَفِيُّ ، نا الْمُهَاجِرُ أَبُو مَخْلَدٍ مَوْلَى الْبَكَرَاتِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَنَّهُ رَخَّصَ لِلْمُسَافِرِ ثَلاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيهِنَّ ، وَلِلْمُقِيمِ يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً ، إِذَا تَطَهَّرَ وَلَبِسَ خُفَّيْهِ أَنْ يَمْسَحَ عَلَيْهِمَا " . وَقَالَ أَبُو الأَشْعَثِ : " يَمْسَحُ الْمُسَافِرُ ثَلاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيهِنَّ ، وَلِلْمُقِيمِ يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً " .
Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from his father that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted the traveler to wipe over the socks for three days and three nights, and the resident for one day and one night. "When a person puts on the socks after performing ablution, he can wipe over them during this period." The narrator named Abu Ash'ath states: "A traveler can wipe over them for three days and three nights, while a resident can do so for one day and one night."
Hadith 748
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الشَّافِعِيُّ ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْحَرْبِيُّ ، نا مُسَدَّدٌ ، نا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ الثَّقَفِيُّ ، مِثْلَهُ سَوَاءً.
This narration is also transmitted with another chain of transmission.
Hadith 749
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ الْبُسْرِيُّ ، نا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، نا عَلِيُّ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ ، وَسَعْدَانُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْعَطَّارُ ، وَاللَّفْظُ لِعَلِيِّ بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ ، قَالُوا : نا سُفْيَانُ ، قَالَ : وَزَادَ حُصَيْنٌ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَتَمْسَحُ عَلَى خُفَّيْكَ ؟ قَالَ : " إِنِّي أَدْخَلْتُهُمَا وَهُمَا طَاهِرَتَانِ " .
Urwah bin Mughirah narrates from his father that I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Are you wiping over your leather socks?" So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "I put them on when they were both pure."
Hadith 750
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ بُهْلُولٍ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ زُنْبُورٍ ، نا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، قَالَ : " الْمَسْحُ عَلَى ظَهْرِ الْخُفَّيْنِ خُطَطٌ بِالأَصَابِعِ " .
Sayyiduna Hasan al-Basri narrates that: "Masah (wiping) will be done on the upper part of the socks, as lines will be made with the fingers."
Hadith 751
حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ الْخَضِرِ ، نا أَبُو الْعَلاءِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الْوَكِيعِيُّ ، ثنا أبِي ، ثنا وَكِيعٌ ، نَا فُضَيْلٌ ، مِثْلَهُ.
This narration is also transmitted with a chain of transmission.
Hadith 752
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، نا دَاوُدُ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ ، نا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنْ ثَوْرِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، نا رَجَاءُ بْنُ حَيْوَةَ ، عَنْ كَاتِبِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ ، قَالَ : " وَضَّأْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ فَمَسَحَ أَعْلَى الْخُفِّ وَأَسْفَلَهُ " .
Sayyiduna Mughira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: "I performed ablution for the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during the expedition of Tabuk, and he wiped over the upper part and the lower part of his leather socks."
Hadith 753
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، نا عِيسَى بْنُ أَبِي عِمْرَانَ ، بِالرَّمْلَةِ ، ثنا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ . رَوَاهُ ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ، عَنْ ثَوْرٍ ، قَالَ : حُدِّثْتُ عَنْ رَجَاءِ بْنِ حَيْوَةَ ، عَنْ كَاتِبِ الْمُغِيرَةِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مُرْسَلا ، لَيْسَ فِيهِ الْمُغِيرَةُ.
The same narration is transmitted with another chain as a mursal hadith, in which there was no mention of Sayyiduna Mughira (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith 754
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْجُنَيْدِ ، قَالا : نا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ الْهَاشِمِيُّ ، نا ابْنُ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ ، قَالَ : " رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَسَحَ عَلَى ظُهُورِ الْخُفَّيْنِ " .
Sayyiduna Mughira bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that: “I saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the upper part of the leather socks (khuff).”
Hadith 755
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، نا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، نا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، حَدَّثَنِي خَالِدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، حَدَّثَنِي سَالِمٌ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : سَأَلَ سَعْدٌ عُمَرَ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَأْمُرُ بِالْمَسْحِ عَلَى ظَهْرِ الْخُفِّ ثَلاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيهِنَّ ، وَلِلْمُقِيمِ يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً " .
Salim narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about wiping over the leather socks (khuffs). He replied: “I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanding to wipe over the upper part of the leather socks, which is for three days and three nights for the traveler, and for one day and one night for the resident.”
Hadith 756
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى ، ثنا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ، وَابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، وَاللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْجُنَيْدِ ، نا يَحْيَى بْنُ غَيْلانَ ، ثنا الْمُفَضَّلُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ، فَقَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ الْبَلَوِيُّ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رَبَاحٍ ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ ، أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ وَفَدَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ عَامًا ، قَالَ عُقْبَةُ : وَعَلَيَّ خُفَّانِ مِنْ تِلْكَ الْخِفَافِ الْغِلاظِ ، فَقَالَ لِي عُمَرُ : " مَتَى عَهْدُكَ بِلُبْسِهُمَا ؟ " ، فَقُلْتُ : لَبِسْتُهُمَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ ، وَالْيَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةُ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ : " أَصَبْتَ السُّنَّةَ " . وَقَالَ يُونُسُ : فَقَالَ : أَصَبْتَ ، وَلَمْ يَقُلِ السُّنَّةَ.
Mufaddal bin Fadalah reports that I asked Yazid bin Abi Habib about wiping over leather socks (khuffs), so he said that Abdullah bin Hakam narrated from Ali bin Rabah, from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) this statement: Sayyiduna Uqbah informed them that once he was part of a delegation that went to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Uqbah says: "At that time, I was wearing thick leather socks, and it was a Friday." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "You have acted according to the Sunnah." In another narration, the words are: "You have done right," and the word "Sunnah" is not mentioned in it.
Hadith 757
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، نا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ ، بِمِصْرَ ، ثنا بِشْرُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ، ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ ، قَالَ : خَرَجْتُ مِنَ الشَّامِ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ ، فَدَخَلْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ ، وَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ، فَقَالَ : " مَتَى أَوْلَجْتَ خُفَّيْكَ فِي رِجْلَيْكَ ؟ " ، قُلْتُ : يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ ، قَالَ : " فَهَلْ نَزَعْتَهُمَا ؟ " ، قُلْتُ : لا ، قَالَ : " أَصَبْتَ السُّنَّةَ " . قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ ، قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ : وَهُوَ صَحِيحُ الإِسْنَادِ.
Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: "I set out from Syria for Madinah Munawwarah on a Friday and reached Madinah Munawwarah on the same Friday. I presented myself before Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and he inquired: 'Since when have you been wearing these leather socks (khuffain) on your feet?' I replied: 'Since last Friday.' He asked: 'Did you take them off?' I replied: 'No!' So he said: 'You have acted according to the Sunnah.'" Shaykh Abu Bakr says that this hadith is ghareeb (rare). Shaykh Abu al-Hasan says that its chain of narration is authentic.
Hadith 758
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، نا أَبُو الأَزْهَرِ ، ثنا رَوْحٌ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، نا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ، قَالا : نا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ " كَانَ لا يُوَقِّتُ فِي الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَقْتًا " .
Nafi' reports regarding Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that: "He did not specify a time limit for wiping over the leather socks (khuffs)."
Hadith 759
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ الْمُعَدَّلُ ، بِالرَّمْلَةِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وُهَيْبٍ الْغَزِّيُّ أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي السَّرِيِّ ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَجَاءٍ ، نا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : " لَيْسَ فِي الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَقْتٌ امْسَحْ مَا لَمْ تَخْلَعْ " .
Nafi’ reports regarding Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: “There is no fixed time limit for wiping over the leather socks; you may wipe over them as long as you do not take them off.”
Hadith 760
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الشَّافِعِيُّ ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْحَرْبِيُّ ، ثنا شُجَاعٌ ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، قَالا : نا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَجَاءٍ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : " يَمْسَحُ الْمُسَافِرُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ مَا لَمْ يَخْلَعْهُمَا " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that: "A traveler should continue wiping over his leather socks until he takes them off."
Hadith 761
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، نا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، وَالْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَبِي الرَّبِيعِ ، وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ . حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ أَبِي النَّجُودِ ، عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ ، قَالَ : جِئْتُ صَفْوَانَ بْنَ عَسَّالٍ الْمُرَادِيَّ ، فَقَالَ : مَا جَاءَ بِكَ ؟ فَقُلْتُ : جِئْتُ أَطْلُبُ الْعِلْمَ ، قَالَ : فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " مَا مِنْ خَارِجٍ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ فِي طَلَبِ الْعِلْمِ إِلا وَضَعَتْ لَهُ الْمَلائِكَةُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا رِضَاءً بِمَا يَصْنَعُ " ، قَالَ : جِئْتُ أَسْأَلُكَ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، كُنْتُ فِي الْجَيْشِ الَّذِي بَعَثَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، " فَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَمْسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ إِذَا نَحْنُ أَدْخَلْنَاهُمَا عَلَى طُهْرٍ ثَلاثًا إِذَا سَافَرْنَا ، وَيَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً إِذَا أَقَمْنَا ، وَلا نَخْلَعَهُمَا مِنْ بَوْلٍ وَلا غَائِطٍ وَلا نَوْمٍ وَلا نَخْلَعَهُمَا إِلا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ " ، قَالَ : وَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " إِنَّ بِالْمَغْرِبِ بَابًا مَفْتُوحًا لِلتَّوْبَةِ ، مَسِيرَتُهُ سَبْعُونَ سَنَةً ، لا يُغْلَقُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ نَحْوِهِ " .
Zirr bin Hubaish narrates that I presented myself before Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal (may Allah be pleased with him). He inquired: "Why have you come?" I replied: "I have come to seek knowledge." So he said: "I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that whoever leaves his house to seek knowledge, the angels, being pleased with his action, spread their wings for him." Zirr said: "I have come to ask about wiping over leather socks (khuffs)." So he replied: "I was part of the army which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent on an expedition, and he instructed us that you may wipe over your leather socks for three days during travel and for one day and one night during residence, provided that you put them on while in a state of ablution, and we should not remove them when performing ablution after urinating, defecating, or sleeping; we would only remove them in the state of major ritual impurity (janabah)." Sayyiduna Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) also mentioned: "I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that in the west there is a door which is open for repentance, its width is the distance of seventy years' travel. It will not be closed until the sun rises from that direction."
Hadith 762
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عِيسَى ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بَكْرِ بْنَ خُزَيْمَةَ النَّيْسَابُورِيَّ ، يَقُولُ : ذَكَرْتُ لِلْمُزَنِيِّ خَبَرَ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ هَذَا ، فَقَالَ لِي : حَدَّثَ بِهِ أَصْحَابُنَا فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لِلشَّافِعِيِّ حُجَّةٌ أَقْوَى مِنْ هَذَا ، يَعْنِي قَوْلَهُ " إِذَا نَحْنُ أَدْخَلْنَاهُمَا عَلَى طُهْرٍ ".
Ali bin Ibrahim narrates that I heard Shaykh Abu Bakr bin Khuzaymah saying: "I mentioned the narration of 'Abdur Razzaq to Imam Muzani, so he said to me: Our companions have also narrated this, because Imam Shafi'i has no more authentic evidence than this." The author says: That is, the words of the narration: "When we have inserted them into them while in a state of ablution."
Hadith 763
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْجُنَيْدِ ، ثنا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ ، ثنا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ ، وَحُصَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، وَيُونُسُ بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَيَمْسَحُ أَحَدُنَا عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ ؟ قَالَ : " نَعَمْ ، إِذَا أَدْخَلَهُمَا وَهُمَا طَاهِرَتَانِ " .

Hadith 764
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، وَعُمَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ ، وَالْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَيَّاشٍ قَالُوا : نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُجَشِّرٍ ، نا هُشَيْمٌ ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِدْرِيسَ الْخَوْلانِيِّ ، ثنا عَوْفُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ الأَشْجَعِيِّ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَمَرَنَا بِالْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ ثَلاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيهِنَّ لِلْمُسَافِرِ ، وَلِلْمُقِيمِ يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً " .
Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us during the expedition of Tabuk regarding wiping over the leather socks: "For a traveler, three days and three nights, and for a resident, one day and one night."
Hadith 765
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، نا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عُفَيْرٍ ، نا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ رَزِينٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ قَطَنٍ ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ نُسِيٍّ ، عَنْ أُبَيٍّ هُوَ ابْنُ عُمَارَةَ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى فِي بَيْتِ عُمَارَةَ الْقِبْلَتَيْنِ ، وَأَنَّهُ قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ " أَمْسَحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ " ، قَالَ : " يَوْمًا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ " ، قَالَ : " وَيَوْمَيْنِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، وَثَلاثًا " ، قَالَ : ثَلاثًا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ حَتَّى بَلَغَ سَبْعًا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " وَمَا بَدَا لَكَ " . هَذَا الإِسْنَادُ لا يُثْبَتُ وَقَدِ اخْتُلِفَ فِيهِ عَلَى يَحْيَى بْنِ أَيُّوبَ اخْتِلافًا كَثِيرًا قَدْ بَيَّنْتُهُ فِي مَوْضِعٍ آخَرَ ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، وَأَيُّوبُ بْنُ قَطَنٍ ، مَجْهُولُونَ كُلُّهُمْ ، وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ.
‘Ubadah bin Nasa’i, from Abi who is Ibn ‘Ammarah, narrates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed prayer in the house of Sayyiduna ‘Ammarah facing both Qiblahs. He (‘Ammarah) asked: “O Messenger of Allah! May I wipe over my leather socks (khuffs)?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “Yes.” He asked: “O Messenger of Allah! For one day?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “Yes, you may.” He asked: “O Messenger of Allah! For two days?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “Yes, you may.” And for three days as well. He asked: “O Messenger of Allah! Even for three days?” He continued asking until he reached seven days. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “As much as you find suitable.” Its chain is not established. There is disagreement regarding the narration from Yahya bin Ayyub, which I have mentioned elsewhere. The narrators of this narration—‘Abdur Rahman, Muhammad bin Yazid, and Ayyub bin Qahtan—are all unknown. And Allah knows best.
Hadith 766
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي حَيْوَةُ ، سَمِعْتُ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، يَقُولُ : حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رَبَاحٍ ، أَنَّ عُقْبَةَ بْنَ عَامِرٍ ، حَدَّثَهُ ، أَنَّهُ قَدِمَ عَلَى عُمَرَ بِفَتْحِ دِمَشْقَ ، قَالَ : وَعَلَيَّ خُفَّانِ ، فَقَالَ لِي عُمَرُ : " كَمْ لَكَ يَا عُقْبَةُ لَمْ تَنْزِعْ خُفَّيْكَ ؟ " ، فَتَذَكَّرْتُ مِنَ الْجُمُعَةِ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ ، فَقُلْتُ : مُنْذُ ثَمَانِيَةِ أَيَّامٍ ، قَالَ : " أَحْسَنْتَ ، وَأَصَبْتَ السُّنَّةَ " .
Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he presented himself before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) on the occasion of the conquest of Damascus. He says: "I was wearing leather socks (khuffs)." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) inquired: "O Uqbah! How many days has it been since you last removed your khuffs?" Then I remembered: "I have been wearing them from the previous Friday until this Friday." I replied: "For eight days." So he said: "You have done right and acted according to the Sunnah."
Hadith 767
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الأَزْهَرِ ، نا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ ، ثنا أبِي ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رَبَاحٍ ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بِهَذَا ، وَقَالَ : " أَصَبْتَ السُّنَّةَ " ، وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ بَيْنَ يَزِيدَ ، وَعَلِيِّ بْنِ رَبَاحٍ أَحَدًا.
The same narration is also transmitted with another chain, however, in it these words are present: "You have acted according to the Sunnah." In the chain of this narration, there is no mention of anyone else between the narrators Yazid and Ali.
Hadith 768
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، نا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُكْرَمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْحَنَفِيُّ ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، نا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْحَنَفِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ أَخُو مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، قَالَ : قَرَأْتُ كِتَابًا لِعَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، مَعَ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ مَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ ، فَقَالَتْ : قُلْتُ : " يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، كُلَّ سَاعَةٍ يَمْسَحُ الإِنْسَانُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَلا يَخْلَعْهُمَا ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ " .
Umar bin Ishaq narrates that I read in the book of Ata bin Yasar, which was with Ata bin Yasar. He states that I asked Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), about wiping over leather socks (khuffs). She informed that I asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Can a man always wipe over his leather socks, never taking them off?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Yes."
Hadith 769
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو هِشَامٍ الرِّفَاعِيُّ ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ السَّكَنِ ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ سَبَلانُ ، قَالا : نا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ لَوْ كَانَ دِينُ اللَّهِ بِالرَّأْيِ لَكَانَ بَاطِنُ الْخُفَّيْنِ أَحَقَّ بِالْمَسْحِ مِنْ أَعْلاهُ ، وَلَكِنْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ عَلَيْهِمَا " . وَاللَّفْظُ لابْنِ مَخْلَدٍ.
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: "If the rulings of Allah's religion were based on opinion, then the underside of the leather socks would have been more deserving of being wiped than the upper side. But I saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the upper side." The wording of the narration is from the narrator named Ibn Makhlad.
Hadith 770
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ، نا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ وَكِيعٍ ، نا حَفْصٌ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي عَلِيٌّ : كُنْتُ أَرَى أَنَّ بَاطِنَ الْخُفَّيْنِ أَحَقُّ بِالْمَسْحِ مِنْ ظَاهِرِهِمَا ، حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ ظَاهِرَهُمَا " .
Abd Khair narrates that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: "I think that the lower part of the leather socks is more deserving (of wiping) than the upper part, but I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wipe over the upper part."
