بَابُ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ
Chapter on wiping over the leather socks (khuffayn)
Hadith 741
حَدَّثَنَا الْقَاضِي الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، نا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، نا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، وَعِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ ، قَالا : نا الأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ هَمَّامٍ ، قَالَ : بَالَ جَرِيرٌ ، ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ : أَتَفْعَلُ هَذَا وَقَدْ بُلْتَ ؟ قَالَ : " نَعَمْ ، رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَالَ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ " . قَالَ الأَعْمَشُ : قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ : فَكَانَ يُعْجِبُهُمْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ ؛ لأَنَّ جَرِيرًا كَانَ إِسْلامُهُ بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ ، هَذَا حَدِيثُ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ ، وَقَالَ عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ : فَقِيلَ لَهُ : يَا أَبَا عَمْرٍو أَتَفْعَلُ هَذَا وَقَدْ بُلْتَ ؟ فَقَالَ : وَمَا يَمْنَعُنِي ، وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَمْسَحُ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ " . وَكَانَ أَصْحَابُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يُعْجِبُهُمْ ذَلِكَ ، لأَنَّ إِسْلامَهُ كَانَ بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ.
The narrator named Hammam reports that Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) urinated, then performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks. So it was said to him, "Why did you do this, when you had already urinated?" He replied, "I saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), he first urinated, then performed ablution and wiped over both his leather socks." The narrator named A‘mash reports that Ibrahim said that the people liked this hadith very much, because Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) had accepted Islam after Surah al-Ma'idah was revealed. In the narration of ‘Isa bin Yunus, it is mentioned that it was said to him, "O Abu ‘Amr! You are doing this, even though you had already urinated?" So he replied, "What would prevent me from doing so, when I saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over his leather socks?" The students of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah bin Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) liked this narration very much because Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) had accepted Islam after Surah al-Ma'idah was revealed.
Hadith 742
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، نا عَلِيُّ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ ، نا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ هَمَّامِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ ، قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ جَرِيرًا تَوَضَّأَ مِنْ مُطَهَّرَةٍ ، فَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ : أَتَمْسَحُ عَلَى خُفَّيْكَ ؟ فَقَالَ : " إِنِّي قَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ " . وَكَانَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ يُعْجِبُ أَصْحَابَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، يَقُولُونَ : إِنَّمَا كَانَ إِسْلامُهُ بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ .
Hammam bin Harith narrates that I saw Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him), he performed ablution from a vessel and then wiped over his leather socks. He was asked: "Are you wiping over your leather socks?" So he replied: "I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wiping over his leather socks." This narration was very much liked by the students of Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him). They used to say that Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam after Surah Al-Ma'idah was revealed.
Hadith 743
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، نا يَعْقُوبُ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ ، نا ابْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، نا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، بِإِسْنَادِهِ نَحْوَهُ.
This narration is also transmitted with another chain of transmission.
Hadith 744
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ ، نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، نا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي ضَمْرَةُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ جَرِيرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَجَلِيِّ ، قَالَ : " قَدِمْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ فَرَأَيْتُهُ مَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ " .
Sayyiduna Jarir bin Abdullah Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: "After Surah Al-Ma'idah was revealed, I came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). I saw that he had wiped over his leather socks."
Hadith 745
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، وَآخَرُونَ قَالُوا : نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَنَانٍ ، نا بَقِيَّةُ ، حَدَّثَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ أَدْهَمَ ، عَنْ مُقَاتِلِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ ، عَنْ شَهْرٍ ، عَنْ جَرِيرٍ ، قَالَ : " رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ " . قَالُوا : بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ ؟ قَالَ : إِنَّمَا أَسْلَمْتُ بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ.
Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: "I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wiping over the leather socks (khuffs)." The people asked: "Did you see this after Surah al-Ma'idah was revealed?" He replied: "I accepted Islam after Surah al-Ma'idah was revealed."
Hadith 746
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ ، نا ابْنُ حَنَانٍ ، نا بَقِيَّةُ ، نا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ، نا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ أَبِي لُبَابَةَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ الْخُزَاعِيِّ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ : " مَا زَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ مُنْذُ أنزلت عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْمَائِدَةِ حَتَّى لَحِقَ بِاللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ " .
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: "After Surah Al-Ma'idah was revealed, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to wipe over his leather socks until he was presented to Allah."
