Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for water for ablution, and he performed ablution once with it, and then he said: “This is the manner of ablution without which Allah does not accept the prayer.” Then he asked for water and performed ablution twice with it, then he said: “This is the manner of ablution for the one who will receive double the reward for performing ablution.” Then he paused for a while, then he asked for water, then performed ablution three times with it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “This is my manner of ablution and the manner of ablution of the Prophets before me.”

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever performs ablution once, then this is the obligatory manner of ablution, and whoever performs ablution twice, he will receive double the reward, and whoever performs ablution three times, then this is my way and the way of the Prophets who came before me."

Thabit Thumali narrates: I asked Imam Abu Ja'far (Imam Muhammad Baqir): Did Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate this hadith to you? That the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution once, once, and twice, twice, and three times, three times? So Imam Abu Ja'far (that is, Imam Baqir) replied: "Yes!" The narrator of this narration, Thumali, is not reliable, and the other narrator of this narration, Ibn Bint Sada, is trustworthy.

Ibn Uyaynah has narrated it in the same way, though its narrator is Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mazani, may Allah be pleased with him, and he is not the companion to whom the method of giving the adhan was taught in a dream.

Amr bin Yahya narrates from his father: Amr bin Abu Hasan Mazni came to the service of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him). This is Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid bin Asim Mazni (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Amr bin Abu Hasan requested: "Can you show us how the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ablution?" Humran narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) once called for water to perform ablution. Then he performed ablution, washed both hands three times, then rinsed his mouth, then put water into his nose, then washed his face three times, then washed his right arm up to the elbow three times, and then washed his left arm in the same way. Then he wiped his head, then washed his right foot up to the ankles three times, and then washed his left foot in the same way. And he stated: "I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution in the same manner as I have performed it. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever performs ablution like this of mine, and then stands and offers two units of prayer in which he is not distracted by his thoughts, Allah Almighty will forgive his past sins.'" Ibn Shihab Zuhri narrates: Our scholars have stated: "This is the method of performing ablution properly for prayer."

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution, he used to pour water up to his elbows. The narrator of this narration, Ibn Aqil, is not reliable.

The narrator named Ubaidullah has reported from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution, he would move his ring while washing his hands. Both the narrator Mu’ammar and his father are weak, and this narration is not authentic.

Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) washed his face, washed his arms up to the elbows, until he even touched the edges of his shoulders, then he wiped his head, and passed both hands over his ears and beard, and then washed both feet.
