Hadith 234
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For the one who does not find water, nabidh is a means for wudu." Imam Abu Muhammad states: What is meant by this nabidh is that which is not intoxicating. The Imam has also stated: In this narration, the narrator named Musayyib made an error, and this error is in two places: one is that he mentioned Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and the other is that he mentioned the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). There is also a difference in some of the words of this narration regarding Musayyib.
Hadith 235
The same narration is transmitted with another chain from Musayyib as a "mawquf" narration, not as a "marfu'" hadith. More authentically, it is established that this is the statement of 'Ikrimah; it is not a "marfu'" hadith reaching the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), nor is its attribution to Sayyiduna 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) correct. The narrator named Musayyib is weak.
Hadith 236
Ikrimah narrates: "Nabidh is a means of ablution for the person who finds nothing except Nabidh to perform ablution with (that is, he does not find water)."
Hadith 237
Ikrimah narrates: "Whoever finds nothing except nabidh, he may perform ablution with nabidh." Imam Awza'i states: "If the nabidh is intoxicating, then a man should not perform ablution with it." The narrator named Abdullah reports: My father stated: "Every thing that cannot be called water, in my view the preferred opinion is: a man should not perform ablution with it, and I prefer more that a man should perform tayammum rather than perform ablution with nabidh."
Hadith 238
Ikrimah narrates: "A person who does not find water can perform ablution with nabidh."
Hadith 239
Ikrimah narrates: "Whoever does not find water, he may perform ablution with nabidh."
Hadith 240
Isa bin Ubaid narrates: I heard Ikrimah, he was asked about a person who does not find water. Ikrimah said: "That person should perform ablution with nabidh (date-infused water)."
Hadith 241
Ikrimah narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "A person who does not find water can perform ablution with nabidh (date-infused water)." The narrator of this narration, Ibn Muharrar, is "abandoned in hadith."
Hadith 242
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person does not find water and he finds nabidh (a drink made from dates or raisins soaked in water), then he should perform ablution (wudu) with nabidh." The narrator of this narration is Aban, the son of Abu Ayyash, and he is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith), while the narrator named Mujā‘ah is "da‘if" (weak). More authentically, it is established that this is the opinion of ‘Ikrimah and not a "marfu‘" (Prophetic) hadith.
Hadith 243
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates this statement from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him): On the night of meeting with the jinn, they made the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution with nabidh (date-infused water), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution with it, and he said: “This is a drink and it is pure.” The narrator named Ibn Lahi’ah is not considered reliable. There is also a statement that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was not present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the night of meeting with the jinn. Alqamah bin Qais has narrated similarly. Abu Ubaidah bin Abdullah and other narrators have narrated this statement from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: “I was not present on the night of meeting with the jinn.”
Hadith 244
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates the statement of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him): Once he went out with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it was the night when the meeting with the jinn took place. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: “O Ibn Mas’ud! Do you have water with you?” Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: “I have nabidh (a drink made from dates or raisins soaked in water) in a vessel.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Pour that over me.” Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution with it and said: “This is something to drink and purity can also be attained with it.” In narrating this report, the narrator named Ibn Lahi’ah is unique, and he is a weak narrator.
Hadith 245
Alqamah bin Qais narrates: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "When the representatives of Janab came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), was any one of you present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that night?" So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "No!" This narration is authentic regarding what is transmitted from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith 246
Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Abdulaziz narrated to us, he said: Ali bin Al-Ja’d narrated to us, Shubah informed him, from Amr bin Murrah, he said: I said to Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Was Abdullah bin Mas’ud present on the night of the Jinn?" He said: "No."
Hadith 247
Amr bin Murrah narrates: I asked Abu Ubaidah, “Was Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) present on the night when the Prophet met the jinn?” He replied, “No!” In another narration, it is mentioned: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On the night of meeting the jinn, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them, “Do you have any water?” They replied, “No!” He then asked, “Do you have any nabidh (a drink made from dates or raisins)?” The narrator says: I think, in the narration, these words are present: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, “Yes!” Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution with that nabidh. Imam Daraqutni states: This narration is not established from two sources; I have already mentioned this before.
Hadith 248
This narration is also transmitted with another chain of narration; however, criticism has been made regarding its various narrators.
Hadith 249
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the night when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met the jinn, he asked: "Do you have any water with you?" They replied: "No! I have nabidh (a drink made from dates or raisins soaked in water)." The narrator states: Then that nabidh was brought, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution with it.
Hadith 250
Abu Wa'il narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: On the night of meeting with the jinn, I was with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) went to them and recited the Qur'an before them. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In a part of the night, the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked me: "O Ibn Mas'ud! Do you have water with you?" I replied: "No! By Allah! O Messenger of Allah! I have only nabidh in the vessel." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Dates are pure and their water is purifying." Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ablution with it. The narrator named Husayn bin Ubaydullah used to fabricate narrations from trustworthy narrators and narrate them from himself.
Hadith 251
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me. He said: "Take a water vessel with you." Then he continued walking, and I also remained with him. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned the incident of meeting the jinn. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When I poured water from that vessel upon you, it was nabidh (a drink made from dates). I said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have made a mistake, I have brought nabidh." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Dates are sweet and its water is sweet."
