مَا جَاءَ فِيمَنْ لَمْ يُسَمِّ اللهَ عَلَى وُضُوئِهِ
What is narrated about one who does not say Bismillah before ablution
Hadith 222
نا ابْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، نا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ أَبُو يَزِيدَ الظَّفَرِيُّ ، نا أَيُّوبُ بْنُ النَّجَّارِ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا تَوَضَّأَ مَنْ لَمْ يَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ ، وَمَا صَلَّى مَنْ لَمْ يَتَوَضَّأْ ، وَمَا آمَنَ بِي مَنْ لَمْ يُحِبَّنِي ، وَمَا أَحَبَّنِي مَنْ لَمْ يُحِبَّ الأَنْصَارَ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever does not mention the name of Allah at the beginning, it is as if he did not perform ablution at all, and whoever did not perform ablution, it is as if he did not pray at all, and whoever does not love me, it is as if he did not believe in me at all, and whoever does not love the Ansar, it is as if he does not love me either.”
Hadith 223
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ مُجَاهِدٍ الْمُقْرِئُ ، نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ، نا أَبُو عَامِرٍ ، نا كَثِيرُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، نا رُبَيْحُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لا وُضُوءَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ " .
Rabee’ bin Abdur Rahman narrates from his father, from his grandfather (from Sayyiduna Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The ablution of the one who does not mention the name of Allah at its beginning (i.e., does not say Bismillah) is not valid.”
Hadith 224
ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الدَّقَّاقُ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُنَادِي ، نا أَبُو بَدْرٍ ، نا حَارِثَةُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، وَنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْعَلاءِ ، نا أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ أَبِي السَّفَرِ ، نا أَبُو غَسَّانَ ، نا جَعْفَرٌ الأَحْمَرُ ، عَنْ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ أَبِي الرِّجَالِ ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا مَسَّ طَهُورَهُ يُسَمِّي اللَّهَ " . وَقَالَ أَبُو بَدْرٍ : كَانَ يَقُومُ إِلَى الْوُضُوءِ فَيُسَمِّي اللَّهَ ثُمَّ يُفْرِغُ الْمَاءَ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ.
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to touch the (vessel for) ablution, he would first recite Bismillah. The narrator named Abu Badr has stated this (that is, in the narration these words are present): "When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would get up for ablution, he would recite Bismillah, then pour water from the vessel onto his hand."
Hadith 225
نا أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، نا أَبُو الأَزْهَرِ ، نا ابْنُ أَبِي فُدَيْكٍ ، وَيَحْيَى بْنُ صَاعِدٍ ، نا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ شَبِيبٍ ، نا ابْنُ أَبِي فُدَيْكٍ ، نا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ حَرْمَلَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي ثِفَالٍ الْمُرِّيِّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَبَاحَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ بْنِ حُوَيْطِبٍ ، يَقُولُ : أَخْبَرَتْنِي جَدَّتِي ، عَنْ أَبِيهَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لا صَلاةَ لِمَنْ لا وُضُوءَ لَهُ ، وَلا وُضُوءَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى عَلَيْهِ ، وَلا يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ مَنْ لَمْ يُؤْمِنْ بِي ، وَلا يُؤْمِنُ بِي مَنْ لَمْ يُحِبَّ الأَنْصَارَ " . وَقَالَ ابْنُ صَاعِدٍ : يُقَالُ أَنَّ أَبَاهَا : سَعِيدَ بْنَ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ نُفَيْلٍ .
Rabah bin Abdur Rahman narrates from his grandmother, who reports from her father: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The prayer of the one who does not have ablution is not valid, and the ablution of the one who does not mention the name of Allah at the beginning (i.e., does not recite Bismillah) is not valid. And the one who does not have faith in Allah does not have faith in me, and the one who does not love the Ansar does not have faith in me."
Hadith 226
حَدَّثَنَا الْمَحَامِلِيُّ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ زَكَرِيَّا ، قَالا : نا هَارُونُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، نا ابْنُ أَبِي فُدَيْكٍ ، بِإِسْنَادِهِ مِثْلَهُ.
This narration is also transmitted with another chain of transmission.
Hadith 227
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَامِدٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ، نا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ، نا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْمُفَضَّلِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ حَرْمَلَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي ثِفَالٍ ، عَنْ رَبَاحِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ بْنِ حُوَيْطِبٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَدَّتَهُ ، تُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهَا ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لا صَلاةَ إِلا بِوَضُوءٍ ، وَلا وُضُوءَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى عَلَيْهِ ، وَلا يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ مَنْ لا يُؤْمِنُ بِي ، وَلا يُؤْمِنُ بِي مَنْ لا يُحِبُّ الأَنْصَارَ " .
Rabah bin Abdur Rahman narrates from his grandmother, who narrates from her father: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "There is no prayer without ablution, and the ablution of the one who does not mention the name of Allah at the beginning is not valid. And the one who does not believe in me does not believe in Allah Almighty, and the one who does not love the Ansar, in reality, does not believe in me."
Hadith 228
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، نا ابْنُ زَنْجُوَيْهِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، نا عَفَّانُ ، نا وُهَيْبٌ ، نا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ حَرْمَلَةَ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : سَمِعَ أَبَا ثِفَالٍ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَبَاحَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ بْنِ حُوَيْطِبٍ ، يَقُولُ : حَدَّثَتْنِي جَدَّتِي ، أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتْ أَبَاهَا ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " لا صَلاةَ لِمَنْ لا وُضُوءَ لَهُ ، وَلا وُضُوءَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ " ، الْحَدِيثَ.
Rabah bin Abdur Rahman narrates from his grandmother: She heard her father, Sayyiduna Saeed bin Zaid bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), saying that he heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The prayer of a person who does not have ablution is not accepted, and the ablution of a person who does not recite 'Bismillah' at the beginning is not accepted."
Hadith 229
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، نا ابْنُ زَنْجُوَيْهِ ، نا أَصْبَغُ بْنُ الْفَرَجِ ، نا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ حَرْمَلَةَ ، حَدَّثَهُ ، عَنْ أَبِي ثِفَالٍ الْمُرِّيِّ ، عَنْ رَبَاحِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ جَدَّتِهِ ، أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتْ أَبَاهَا سَعِيدِ بْنَ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ نُفَيْلٍ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " لا صَلاةَ لِمَنْ لا وُضُوءَ لَهُ ، وَلا وُضُوءَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ " .
Rabah bin Abdur Rahman narrates from his grandmother: She heard her father, Sayyiduna Saeed bin Zaid bin Amr bin Nufail (may Allah be pleased with him), saying: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The prayer of a person who does not have ablution is not accepted, and the ablution of the one who does not recite 'Bismillah' at the beginning is not accepted."
Hadith 230
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ مَخْلَدٍ ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْحَرْبِيُّ ، نا مُسَدَّدٌ ، نا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْمُفَضَّلِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ حَرْمَلَةَ ، بِإِسْنَادِهِ مِثْلَهُ.
This narration is also transmitted with another chain of transmission.
Hadith 231
حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي الشَّوْكِ ، نا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُكْرَمٍ ، نا يَحْيَى بْنُ هَاشِمٍ ، وَثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ غَالِبٍ ، وَثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الدَّقَّاقُ ، نا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سِنِينَ ، قَالا : نا يَحْيَى بْنُ هَاشِمٍ ، نا الأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " إِذَا تَطَهَّرَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهَ ؛ فَإِنَّهُ يُطَهِّرُ جَسَدَهُ كُلَّهُ ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ فِي طُهُورِهِ لَمْ يَطْهُرْ مِنْهُ إِلا مَا مَرَّ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءُ ، فَإِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْ طُهُورِهِ فَلْيَشْهَدْ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، فَإِذَا قَالَ ذَلِكَ فُتِحَتْ لَهُ أَبْوَابُ السَّمَاءِ " . يَحْيَى بْنُ هَاشِمٍ ضَعِيفٌ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah (bin Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “When a person begins to perform wudu, he should first recite ‘Bismillah’, because this will purify his entire body. If he does not recite ‘Bismillah’ before wudu, then only that part will be purified upon which water is applied. And when a person completes his wudu, he should recite the testimony of faith: There is no deity except Allah, and Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is Allah’s special servant and Messenger. When he recites this, the gates of the heavens will be opened for him.” The narrator of this narration, Yahya bin Hashim, is weak.
