Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Sometimes a cat would come to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and he would bring a vessel towards it, and it would drink water from it. Then the Prophet would perform ablution (wudu) with the leftover water from which the cat had drunk. The narrator named Abu Bakr states: The narrator of this narration is Yaqub, who is Qadi Abu Yusuf, and the narrator named Abdur-Rabb is Abdullah bin Saeed Maqbari, who is weak.

About the leftover of a cat, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This water should be poured away and the vessel should be washed once (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps the words are:) or twice." This narration is "Mawquf" (stopped at the Companion).

Muhammad bin Sirin narrates regarding Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "When a cat puts its mouth into a vessel, then pour out the water in it and wash it once."

Muhammad bin Sirin narrates this statement of Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): He said regarding cats: "If it puts its mouth into a vessel, then Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Wash it once and pour out the water that is in it."

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) stated regarding the cat: "When it puts its mouth into a vessel, a person should wash it seven times." The narrator of this narration, Laith bin Abu Sulaym, is not a hafiz, and this narration is "mawquf," and it is not authentically transmitted from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him). It is more likely that this is the statement of Ata himself.

Hasan bin Ali narrates: I heard Ata saying: He said regarding cats: "When it puts its mouth into a vessel, a person should wash it seven times."

Saeed bin al-Musayyib says: "A person should wash it twice (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps the words are:) three times."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a dog puts its mouth into a vessel, the way to purify it is to wash it seven times, and the first time it should be cleaned with soil. As for the cat, the ruling is that it should be washed once or twice." This doubt is from the narrator named Qarah. The narrator named Abu Bakr has stated this: The narrator named Abu Asim has transmitted this narration as a "marfu‘" hadith, while other narrators have transmitted the ruling regarding the dog as a "marfu‘" hadith and the ruling regarding the cat putting its mouth as a "mawquf" narration.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says regarding the cat: "When it puts its mouth into a vessel, then wash it once (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words:) wash it twice." This narration is transmitted in the same way from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) as a "Mawquf" narration.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: "If a cat puts its mouth into a vessel, the vessel should be washed, just as it is washed when a dog puts its mouth into it." This narration is "Mawquf" and is not authentically established from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). Some narrations from the narrator Yahya bin Ayyub contain irregularities.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If a cat puts its mouth into a vessel, it should be washed in the same way as it is washed when a dog puts its mouth into it." The Shaykh (Imam al-Daraqutni) says: This narration is not authentic as a "marfu‘" (attributed to the Prophet) and is more authentic as a statement of Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), and there is also disagreement regarding this matter.

The same narration is transmitted with another chain as a "Mawquf" narration.

Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If a cat puts its mouth into a vessel, then that vessel should be washed seven times." This narration is "Mawquf" and is not authentically transmitted.

This narration is also transmitted with another chain of transmission.

The son of Tawus narrates about his father: He used to wash the vessel seven times if a cat put its mouth in it, just as he would if a dog put its mouth in it. Ibn Jurayj narrates: I asked Ata, "What is the ruling regarding a cat?" He replied, "It is like a dog." Or perhaps he said, "It is even worse than that."

Mujahid, regarding a cat putting its mouth into a vessel, says: "Wash that vessel seven times."

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Sometimes I and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would perform ablution from the same vessel, from which a cat had previously drunk water. This narration is "Sahih" (authentic).

Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This (cat) is not impure; rather, it is like the animals that live in the house." This statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is regarding the cat.

It is narrated about Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): Once a cat ate some of the "Hareesa," so Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) later ate from it and said: "I have seen the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution with water left over by a cat." The same narration is also transmitted with another chain, however, it is "Mawquf" (stopped) at Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would pour a vessel towards the cat, and the cat would drink water from it. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform ablution using the water left over by the cat.

Sayyida Kabsha bint Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates, who was the wife of one of the sons of Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him): Once, Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the house, so this woman placed water for his ablution. During this, a cat came so that it could drink from the water, so Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) tilted the vessel towards it, and the cat drank the water. The woman narrates: When Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at me and saw that I was looking at him attentively, he asked: "O my niece! Are you surprised at this?" The woman narrates: I replied: "Yes!" So Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has said: This (cat) is not impure, rather it is one of those animals that move around among you."

Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates from his father (Imam Muhammad al-Baqir, may Allah have mercy on him): It was asked from Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him (or perhaps Imam Zayn al-Abidin, may Allah have mercy on him), about the leftover water of a cat. He replied: "It is included among the beasts, and there is no harm in it (i.e., in its leftover water)."
