Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once we participated in the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa’ along with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). During this time, a man had relations with a polytheist woman. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) was returning, her husband, who was not present before, arrived. He swore that he would not rest until he had shed the blood of one of the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Then he set out in pursuit of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Wherever the Prophet (peace be upon him) camped (the Qadi has narrated these words). When the Prophet (peace be upon him) camped at a place, he said: “Who will guard us tonight?” An Ansari and a Muhajir stepped forward. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Both of you stay at the edge of the mountain pass.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions camped in the valley’s pass. When these two reached the edge of the pass, the Ansari said to the Muhajir: “Which part of the night would you like to sleep, the first part or the last part?” He said: “The first part.” The narrator says: The Muhajir moved aside and slept, and the Ansari stood up and began to pray. That same man (the polytheist) came. When he saw the face of a man, he realized that he was there to guard the people. So he shot an arrow at the Ansari, which struck him. The Ansari pulled out the arrow and remained standing. Then the man shot a second arrow, which also struck him. The Ansari pulled it out as well and continued praying. The man shot a third arrow, which struck the Ansari, and he pulled it out and put it aside. Then the Ansari went into bowing, then prostration, then he woke up his companion (and said to him): “Get up, for I have lost much blood.” When the polytheist saw both of them, he realized that now they would kill him. When the Muhajir saw the Ansari’s blood flowing, he said: “Subhan Allah! Why didn’t you wake me up earlier?” In another narration, these words are mentioned: “When he shot you with the first arrow, why didn’t you tell me then?” The Ansari replied: “I was reciting a surah, and I did not like to leave it unfinished. But when the man kept shooting arrows at me, then I went into bowing (and after finishing the prayer) I woke you up. By Allah! If I had not feared neglecting the duty the Prophet (peace be upon him) assigned to me, I would have preferred to die before finishing it.”
