Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abu al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say to his wives: "When any of you experiences postnatal bleeding, she should not come near me for forty days. However, if she attains purity before that, then the ruling is different." There is also a difference in the transmission of this narration. Some narrators have transmitted it as a mawquf narration up to Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abu al-As (may Allah be pleased with him). Similarly, this narration is also reported as the statement of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), and other companions.
