Sayyida Hamnah bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I was afflicted with excessive istihada (non-menstrual bleeding). I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask about this issue. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was at that time in the house of Zaynab bint Jahsh. The lady narrates: I said, "O Messenger of Allah! I am suffering from excessive istihada and it is a severe complaint. What do you advise regarding this? This condition has prevented me from performing prayers." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Place some cotton, the blood will stop." The lady said, "It is too much." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Tie a bandage." She said, "It is even more than that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Place a cloth." She said, "It is even more than that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I instruct you regarding two matters. Whichever of them you do, it will suffice in place of the other. If you have the strength for both, then you know best." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "This is a stab from Satan. According to Allah's knowledge, your menstruation days are six or seven days. After that, perform ghusl (ritual bath), then see that now you have become pure, so clean that place, then for twenty-four days or twenty-three days, continue to perform prayers and keep fasts. Doing so will be permissible for you. Do this every month just as women generally spend their specific days of menstruation and purity regarding their menstruation and purity. And if you have the strength, then delay the Zuhr prayer and perform the Asr prayer early, then perform ghusl and offer Zuhr and Asr together. Then delay Maghrib and perform Isha early, and after performing ghusl, offer both prayers together, so you may do so. Perform a separate ghusl for Fajr. In this way, perform prayers and keep fasts if you have the strength for this." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "This is preferable to me."
