حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ ، وَأَبُو سَهْلِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ الشَّافِعِيُّ ، قَالُوا : نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، نَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، يَقُولُ : " إِنَّ الْعَضْبَاءَ نَاقَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، كَانَتْ لا تُسْبَقُ كُلَّمَا دُفِعَتْ فِي سِبَاقٍ ، فَدُفِعَتْ يَوْمًا فِي إِبِلٍ فَسُبِقَتْ فَكَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَآبَةٌ أَنْ سُبِقَتْ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنَّ النَّاسَ إِذَا رَفَعُوا شَيْئًا ، أَوْ أَرَادُوا رَفْعَ شَيْءٍ وَضَعَهُ اللَّهُ " .
Saeed bin Musayyib narrates that Qaswa was the she-camel of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Whenever she participated in a race, she would always come first; no one could surpass her. Once, during a race, she lagged behind, and this caused great distress to the companions. On this occasion, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "When people attain heights, sometimes Allah brings them down as well (the narrator is unsure if these are the exact words:) when He wants to show someone as elevated."
