Dahhak bin Muzahim narrates: I, Hasan bin Abu al-Hasan, Mak'hool, Amr bin Dinar, and Tawus gathered together in the mosque of Khayf. These people began to argue loudly, and they started to debate about predestination (qadr). At this, Tawus, who was the most respected among them, said: "Be silent! I will narrate to you the hadith which I heard from Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him), who heard it from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): 'Allah the Exalted has made some things obligatory upon you, so do not neglect them. He has set some limits for you, so do not transgress them. He has forbidden you from certain things, so do not try to commit them. And there are some matters about which He has not informed you; He has not forgotten them. Do not impose them upon yourselves, for this is a mercy from your Lord, so accept it!' (After this, Tawus said:) We say only what our Lord and our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) have said: All matters are in the hand of Allah the Exalted; He alone commands everything, and He alone will give reward for everything. The servant has no power over anything; in this matter, the servant's will has no effect." At this, everyone stood up and they approved of Tawus's statement (i.e., they accepted it).
