Daraqutni

Malik bin Thaqafi narrates that I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about strong nabidh (fermented drink). He replied: Once, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in a gathering when he sensed the smell of nabidh from a person. He asked: “What is this smell?” The man replied: “It is the smell of nabidh.” So, by the order of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that nabidh was sent for. The man sent the nabidh, and it was brought before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought his blessed face close to it and smelled it, then turned his face away and returned it. When that person had left from Batha, he came back and asked: “Is this forbidden or permissible?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again brought his blessed head close to it, sensed its strong smell, mixed water into it, and then drank it. He said: “When your water skins begin to ferment, end it with water.” This narration is transmitted in this way; however, it is authentically reported from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “Whatever intoxicates in large amounts, even a small amount of it is forbidden.” This narration has already passed.
