Sayyiduna ‘Ubada bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man named ‘Abdullah bin so-and-so (the narrator Shu‘ban forgot the name here) came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Everything I own is given in charity, except for my horse and my weapons.” The narrator states: He also had some land. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) took possession of it and designated it as endowment (i.e., as financial assistance for various people). His parents came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: “Give us something to eat from the wealth our son gave in charity. By Allah! We have nothing else besides this, and we go around seeking endowments.” So the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) took that garden and handed it over to both of them. Then, when both of them passed away, their son became the heir, the one who had given it in charity. He came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! The thing I gave in charity, which you returned to my parents, now that both of them have passed away, is it lawful for me?” The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Yes! Eat from it with happiness.”
