Sayyida Zainab bint Abu Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Sayyida Asma bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) had breastfed me, so (Sayyida Asma’s husband) Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) used to come to me even at times when I was combing my hair. He would grab my hair and say to me: “Come here to me and talk with me.” Sayyida Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) considered him to be my father and Asma’s children to be my brothers. After that, shortly before the incident of Jarrah, Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), who was my foster brother, proposed for my daughter for his son Hamza. Hamza and Mus’ab were both sons of a certain woman. Sayyida Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: She sent a message to Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) saying, “Is it permissible to do so?” So Abdullah bin Zubair sent me a reply saying, “Do you want to refuse to give your daughter in marriage? I am your brother and Asma’s children are your brothers, but the children of Zubair who are from women other than Asma are not your siblings.” Sayyida Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When he sent this message, at that time many of the noble Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were also present, and the Mothers of the Believers were also present. They stated that “Breastfeeding from the man’s side does not establish the prohibition (of marriage) for anything.”
