Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the polytheists left after the Battle of Uhud, leaving behind those who had been killed, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saw something that caused him great distress. He saw Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) that his stomach had been cut open, his nose had been cut off, and both his ears had been severed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If I did not fear that women would grieve, or that this would become a custom after me, I would have left him as he was, until Allah resurrected him from the bellies of wild beasts and birds. I will mutilate seventy men in place of him.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for his cloak and covered the face of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) with it, but his feet remained uncovered. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) covered his face and placed grass over his feet. Then he brought him forward and said takbeer over him ten times. After that, one by one, people were brought and placed, while the body of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) remained there, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed seventy funeral prayers over him, because the number of martyrs at the Battle of Uhud was seventy. When they had been buried and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished, this verse was revealed: “Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction.” The verse continues: “Be patient, and your patience is only with the help of Allah.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was patient and did not mutilate anyone. This narration has only been transmitted by the narrator Isma’il ibn ‘Ayyash, and in the narrations he has transmitted from narrators other than the Syrians, there is some inconsistency.
