Suwaid bin Ghaflah narrates: When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, Aisha bint Khalifah Khath’amiyyah, who was the wife of Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him), said to Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him): “Congratulations to you on becoming the Commander of the Faithful.” So Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: “You are congratulating me on the martyrdom of the Commander of the Faithful (i.e., Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him)? Go away, you are divorced.” The woman (while weeping) put her cloth over her face and said: “O Allah! My intention was only good (i.e., I did not mean this).” Later, Sayyiduna Imam Hasan sent her ten thousand dirhams or dinars as provision and the remaining part of her dowry; when these things were placed before her, she wept and said: “All this is very little compared to the beloved who has departed.” When the messenger informed Sayyiduna Imam Hasan about this, he said: “If I had not made the divorce binding for this woman, I would have taken her back, but I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever gives his wife three divorces, whether he gives one divorce in each period of purity, or one divorce in each month, or gives three divorces at once, then that woman is not lawful for him until she marries another man and becomes divorced or widowed.”
