Nafi’ reports: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) divorced his wife while she was in her menstrual period. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) presented himself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him about this matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “He should take her back and then leave her as she is until she becomes pure. Then leave her as she is until she menstruates again. Then leave her as she is until she becomes pure. When she becomes pure, before having intercourse with her, he may divorce her.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “This is the method regarding which Allah has commanded that women should be divorced accordingly.”
