Nafi' reports: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) gave his wife a divorce during her menstruation. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him about this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Tell Abdullah to take his wife back. When she has performed ghusl (i.e., becomes pure), he should leave her as she is until she menstruates again. Then, when she has performed ghusl after the next menstruation (i.e., becomes pure), he may divorce her before having intercourse with her. If he wishes to keep her, he may keep her. This is the method about which Allah has commanded that women should be divorced according to it." Ubaydullah reports: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar gave his wife a divorce during her menstruation, but he gave the divorce contrary to the Sunnah method.
