Hadith 3888

نَا الْقَاضِي الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، نَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَرِيرِ بْنِ جَبَلَةَ ، نَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَائِشَةَ ، نَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا ، قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، " أَلَيْسَ قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى : الطَّلاقُ مَرَّتَانِ سورة البقرة آية 229 ، فَلِمَ صَارَ ثَلاثًا ؟ ، قَالَ : فَإِمْسَاكٌ بِمَعْرُوفٍ أَوْ تَسْرِيحٌ بِإِحْسَانٍ سورة البقرة آية 229 " .
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! Has Allah Almighty not said: 'Divorce is twice.' Then why is there a ruling for the third (divorce)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "(Allah has also said:) 'Then either retain (her) in a fair manner or release (her) with kindness.'"
